I hate that people don't follow this simple rule. Having said that, I love the feeling when you're in a rush and driving behind someone in the left lane that isn't necessary going slow but not as fast as you, and they actually realize it, so they switch lanes to let you pass, then move back to their original lane. It restores my faith in humanity.

[–]Tylerdurdon 28 points29 points ago

I do this all the time. Much of the time I'm going faster then people, but I still switch back to the middle/right when there's room. If someone actually comes up though, even though I might be passing others, I'll move over.

I think it might be because there's a lot of this mentality out there

[–]CoolerMcCools 1 point2 points ago

My issue is, I will set my cruise control at like 68 and then some guy will come speeding up behind me so I'll move over and let him pass. 2 minutes later I need to pass someone in the middle lane and that guy that just zoomed up on my ass who I let pass is now going 63 blocking the left lane.

Its infuriating.

Oh I know!!!! I encounter something very similar: Speed is 65, cruise set to 70, humming along in the right lane. I come upon someone going slower, proceed into the left lane to pass. Right when I get along side, what do they do? Speed up so I am now not passing. In the past, I would let them go ahead, get back behind them and resume, only to have them slow down again and the same thing happen! Now, when they do that crap I just drop it in 4th, fly by and put some room in between us, then resume.

I learned in driver's ed that this is the right way to do it. I think most Americans know they should do this, and just don't because they don't care about how their actions affect other people.

I saw a news clip where police where cracking down on people hanging out in the left lane and slowing traffic. All of the people they interviewed had no idea they were doing something wrong.

The problem is that you drivers ed is so short. In Germany where I have to take 14 driving lessons, it kinda gets forced into you head after the instructor "annoys" you with that all the time.

It should really read 'Non passing traffic keep right'. It's the passing lane, not the fast lane.

I've seen on my travels (can't remember which state) signs that said "Keep right except to pass". They are doing it right.

I have an Uncle who is an asshole.

He delivers "speedy delivery" packages for some random company in his old, piece of shit minivan. He goes on multiple 6-18 hour drives a week and he does it all in the passing lane, going no faster than speed limit. Ever.

So he clogs traffic and justifies creating an unsafe driving environment by saying, "It's my right to drive in the passing lane! And it's the law! People shouldn't be going faster than the speed limit and I am making sure that doesn't happen."

Yeah, Uncle Lee, you're a real bad-ass. /sarcasm

Thankfully, there is justice and he has pulled over on the side of the road three times to vent out his road-rage. Every time he has gotten knocked the fuck out. Last time he had to have parts of his eye-socket rebuilt. In my opinion it serves the dumb bastard right.

[–]BarrySquared 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Could you share the stories?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Alright, bit of background since you're interested.

My Uncle is 6'4 and probably 230-250 lbs. None of which is muscle. He wears glasses. He has thinning ginger hair. He uses his tallness and bulk to try to intimidate people. I caught onto his act at roughly six years of age. So I'm sure the real highway-badasses/madmen have no fear of him.

Anyways, his first time he was pulling his bullshit act in Omaha, Nebraska. Some little guy in a Honda Civic wasn't having it, flicked him off and motioned for a parking lot. Uncle Lee being the bright guy he is, pulls over and gets out.

So this stocky little dude at roughly 5'8...oh yeah, my Aunt was in the car with my Uncle. Well this stocky little guy gets out of his Honda Civic, my Uncle tries to lecture him, something along the lines of "Hey, you're a real assho-" BOOM! This dude punches him right in the face, shatters his glasses and gives him a shiner that persists for the next 6 weeks and turns every color of the rainbow.

Now the last incident was really sketch and I honestly believe my uncle could have died. He basically pulled the same shit as the first time only it was totally dark out. The driver jumps out of his pick-up truck and punches my Uncle directly in the eye and drops him. At which point he starts screaming and yelling and just relentlessly kicking the shit out of my uncle, face, ribs, legs. Once he's tired of that he leans over and whispers something in my Uncle's ear (according to my aunt) and strolls back to his car and drives off.

My uncle hasn't told anybody what the guy said to him, I'd imagine it was pretty threatening though. Hopefully he learns his lesson.

If you're going "fast," you're generally passing slower people. If you're in the left lane and someone wants to go faster than you are, move over.

This should be at the top of the page!

[–]lotsa1s 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. If you're going 85 mph in a passing lane in Texas without passing anyone, you're still misusing the lane.

The left lane is for passing people in the right lane. If there isn't a long group of cars in the right lane to pass, you should return to the right lane until you need pass someone again.

Why would you need to stay in the passing lane if the right lane was clear anyway? It doesn't make any sense. Just move over.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tell that to the old couple thinking 65 is the new 'fast' just because their old Ford's top MPH was 50.

[–]Slownique 8 points9 points ago

Was behind a senior doing 35 in a 50. It was rough, but 50 is the limit- not minimum.

You can actually be pulled over for that though. It's considered endangerment to other drivers because you aren't keeping with the flow of traffic.

a: Someone is behind you, and

b: You're not actively passing traffic,

you should move over. If you're doing 20 or 200.

It doesn't matter how fast you are going, if someone is behind you, speed up or (when possible) move over. It doesn't mean you are doing anything wrong, it's just being considerate of other drivers. As an added bonus, with them in front of you to play cop bait, you don't have to worry as much about getting pulled over for speeding.

[–]I_like_mangoes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If he's on a 2 lane road he does not need to speed up. If the other driver wants to pass then they can use the other lane as long as it's safe and allowed. (no solid line) of course if you're on a 2 lane road and you have a line of cars behind you...i think it's required by law to pull over and let them pass.

now if he was on a 4 lane road with passing lanes then he should just get over if he isn't already.

one thing I hate is when people get on my ass...when I'm in the far right lane.

[–]lotsa1s 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dude, just get out of the passing lane. It's not a "fast" lane. It's a passing lane.

If there's sparse traffic in the right lane, move over until you need to pass someone again.

Then get in the clear passing lane and pass them at your pleasure before returning to the right lane to keep the passing lane clear. Bam.

See how the system works? It benefits everyone and everyone gets to drive the speed they want.

Respect the passing lane.

[–]tubabacon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hate that speed limits have become "You must go at least this fast sign" to drivers. It's a LIMIT, not a mandate

[–]Mechanical_Owl 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think that would fit on the sign.

[–]kalyco 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For the sake of brevity the sign should read, "Left Lane, Passing Only." The problem with "Slower traffic, keep right" is that no one wants to admit that they're the, "slower traffic," so there's no incentive to get out of the way. Left lane passing only, makes it much clearer...

Thank you. If anyone here has driven in Germany, you'll know that most Germans abide by this principle. It's orderly, safe, and sane. If anyone here has driven in the DC metro area, none of this will make sense.

[–]Bitter_Idealist 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Our signs read: KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS. They don't work either.

[–]likeguiltdoes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it unlawful to break the speed limit while passing? I mean, I know speeding is unlawful any time, but I remember hearing at some point that you're only legally supposed to pass if you can pass and not break the speed limit.

Also...I don't know why I'm asking you. :D

[–]p_rex 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Speed limits are selectively enforced, largely because safe passing often requires exceeding the limit. I've taken it to 85 or even 90 miles per hour for a few moments when it's necessary to act decisively to pass and then clear the left lane, something which does not bother me and for which I have never been pulled over or ticketed.

[–]hobodan 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The same can be applied for turnouts when traveling up mountain roads. There is nothing like being stuck in the middle of a GIANT train or cars, slowly crawling up the mountain.

I always wonder what is going through people's minds when they have a clear road in front of them, with a line of cars behind them. Do they just not notice? Are they that inconsiderate?

[–]vectorjohn 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What gets me is when you get to the passing lane, and everyone who was going 10 under suddenly decides it is time to speed. Then passing becomes a game of chicken to try and pass going like 25 over before the lane ends. This I don't understand, although I have guesses.

[–]hobodan 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the majority of the time, they lose track of what speed they are going. They notice you passing and decide to fix their speed. Why they don't wait until after one passes is beyond me. This is why cruise control is awesome!

[–]vectorjohn 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ahh, the magic of cruise control. Rarely is there a road where I can't just stick it on 8 or 10 over and just stay on that speed. But I also know there are people who just don't like cruise control, and a lot of them fluctuate with a wide range of speeds.

[–]juliusgulius 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love cruise control except when there are other drivers on the road. They pass, then they slow down. I pass, then they speed up and pass me. They slow down, I pass, etc. And they glare at me as if I'm driving like an asshole. In reality I'm the one that is going a consistent speed and they are pissing me off!

[–]cive666 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wish there was something that indicated who has cruise control on. What you just said I notice all the time.

How about when you're on cruise, you come to a slight turn, no slow down required and the person passing you slows way the fuck down. And now you have to brake because there is someone in front of you.

[–]geekychica 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that's happened to me a few times on long drives if I'm not using cruise control and there's not many cars on the road. A car will drive up behind me, tail for a second, then pass quickly, and I'll be surprised to see that oops, I was going way slower than I though, so I speed up.

A. Move out of the way of cars coming up behind me if I feel I'm going too slow.

B. Shift lanes for merging traffic onto the Interstate

C. Shift lanes for cars/cops/etc in shoulder lanes

D. Intentionally break up future traffic jams by going slightly slower to help disperse the cars (when need be)

I am convinced that there are many self-important douche-bags out there who feel it is incumbent upon them to regulate other driver's speed when the police are not around. THESE are the people who cause accidents.

[–]zodar 34 points35 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Never attribute to malice what can be properly explained by stupidity.

It's not that people are trying to prevent people from driving faster. It's simply the fact that EVERYONE drives the speed they think is proper and safe. If you feel like you're driving too fast, you slow down until you lose that feeling.

Couple that personal speed equilibrium with a healthy dose of inconsiderate, head-up-your-ass self absorption and you get people driving 5 mph over the speed limit, parked in the left lane. They don't realize they're regulating other people's speeds. They are the stars of their own movies, and everyone drives their speed.

I pulled up along a Uhaul truck on the 405 here in Southern California. It was doing 52 in the far left lane, piloted by two blissfully unaware 20-somethings. When I honked at them and told them to get out of the passing lane, they looked utterly bewildered. Why shouldn't they drive in the fast lane, regardless of their speed? They are the stars of this movie and stars drive in the left lane.

[–]DogWhisperer 10 points11 points ago

The rule is, anyone going slower than you is a granny slowpoke and anyone going faster than you is a reckless idiot.

[–]dorky2 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think this describes most of the left-lane Sunday drivers, but not all. There really are people who think they should prevent other drivers from going too fast by boxing them in and matching their speed with the car in the right lane. This just leads to tail-gating, road rage and more accidents.

[–]ThatNetworkGuy 2 points3 points ago

There's a instance of this on one of the British police TV shows.

An undercover police car was chasing someone on the motorway, in the fast lane. Suddenly an old man, fed up with being overtaken at speed with the criminal seemingly being the last straw, *pulled out in front of the police (who had their blues and twos going) and slowed them down from 120mph to 70mph in the blink of an eye.

Needless to say, the criminal got away, and the old codger was charged with obstructing the police.

[–]likeguiltdoes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well...that's just dumb in its own right. Even if you were fed up and were going to do this...why the fuck would you choose to take it out on a cop who is CLEARLY involved in a chase? Hahaha, he deserved it.

[–]Tiver 13 points14 points ago

That, and people who are oblivious to cars behind them. I learned my mother was in this category.

I hate when you're on a single lane stretch of road, which then has another lane open up for a steep hill with a sign stating for slow vehicles to go to the right. Almost every time the guy going 5mph under the speed limit will never get over to the right.

Also, German drivers are much better about leaving proper following room in front of them, which is a huge problem in America. It's substantially safer to go 15 over and leave plenty of space in front of you (a la the Autobahn), than go even below the speed limit and not.

[–]AhhhClem 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not if that person is passing someone. The Autobahn is precisely engineered and both keeping right except to pass AND tailgating are strictly enforced. One cannot even attempt to apply any correlation to American interstates.

Tailgating should be enforced here. I wish it were...

[–]machzel08 0 points1 point ago

It also helps that if the guy behind you is doing 160mph and you are doing 80mph, both of you probably aren't going to walk away.

[–]OompaOrangeFace 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry, but if I'm doing 65 on a 65 mph road in the left lane so that I can pass someone going slower than 65 and you come up at 75 behind me, then you can damn well wait until I get around the traffic. There is almost nothing that pisses me off more than "self-important douche-bags" out there who feel it is incumbent upon them to drive 10 over the speed limit.

Speeders are the self-important ones, not those doing the speed limit.

[–]NoSalt 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hey, as long as you pass then get back in the slow lane, I'm good with that. It's when you decide to hang out in the fast lane that I get irate. People who intentionally hang out in the fast lane, whether it is to regulate traffic or to passive-aggressively "punish" a speeder, cause accidents. There is nothing anybody can do to completely stop speeding, so blocking in a speeder will only make them try to go around you. When this type of maneuvering happens at high speed, the chances for an accident occurring go up. It is safer for everybody involved if slower traffic keeps right, except to pass.

[–]veruus 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bingo! If I'm in that lane, I'm passing someone or I'm about to be passing the next guy. I'm not diddy-bopping around at 5 under. If you want to do 80 either wait for me to be done passing people or fuck off and zip around me, if you think you can do it.

[–]JimmerUK 3 points4 points ago

Or you could just check your mirrors and wait for the person doing eighty to pass you, before you then pass the other guy.

I never do this to get in someone's way and ruin their afternoon. In fact, I'll speed up some if it will keep things moving smoothly. I'm not going to do 10-15 over, though, to keep from offending someone's sensibilities.

[–]AimsForNothing 2 points3 points ago

I'm going the speed limit, there is a really slow truck in the right lane. I pass so I don't lose my momentum. I don't give a fuck about you going 10 or more over unless I think it could cause an accident by not giving you enough time to slow down.

If you can pull out, pass, and pull back in without slowing the speeder down, that's fine, but to force them to slow down is dangerous.

Also, who's to say that the person speeding behind isn't simply in an overtaking manoeuvre on you?

The basic, common sense message, is do not overtake unless you are sure you can complete the manoeuvre safely and without causing risk or inconvenience to another road user.

What about cruising in the center lane? How do people feel about that?

I usually try to keep out of the right lane because a lot of people are dipshits about the entrance ramp and it’s better to give them room. So I cruise in the center lane and just get over to the right when there’s a large pack coming up behind. A couple of cars here or there, I stay where I am.

You're effectively turning a 3 lane road into a 2 lane road by doing this, so don't.

[–]bad_religion 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Especially when they start blinding you with high-beams to get you to move. This happens to me all the time, even if I'm already going 20 mph over the speed limit on the interstate. If you're going 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, consider it a favour when I cause you to slow down. I'm probably saving you from a ticket.

[–]plainOldFool 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Disagree 100%. I don't care if I am driving 85 mph. If I am in the left and someone is coming up faster than me, I move the fuck over. I don't care how fast you are going. If you are slower, move over. That is if it is safe to move over.... certainly don't cut anyone off to make way for the faster driver. This happened to me this morning. I was in the middle lane and a dude in the left cut me off to let others pass him. Noble gesture, I do it all the time myself. But please be aware of cars in the other lanes.

[–]bad_religion 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I will move over if possible, but I find most drivers going 30+ mph over usually just pass on the right before they even have to slow down. So I'm quite leery of changing to the right when someone is going that fast. If I'm going 15 mph over and someone going 20 mph over creeps up to me I always move out of the way.

[–]DWells55 7 points8 points ago

If you're driving that slowly, wait to pass until the left lane is clear and you won't be holding anyone up.

You have no business cruising in the fast lane at any speed; it is flatly illegal.

[–]orkid68 1 point2 points ago

Go back and read it again. It’s about passing, not cruising. Also, speeding is flatly illegal, too, last I checked.

This is poor logic. The only harm a "speeder" does to a person when they pass them is hurt their feelings. If someone is slowing people down, they're costing them time. I drive 90 miles a day and I figured it up one day: If I elected not to pass anybody at any point in my commute, I would spend the equivalent of two extra days on the road per year. No thanks.

[–]TheCid -1 points0 points ago

[–]Remy45 4 points5 points ago

That could just be that there's normally more enforcement in the 55 zone than the 65 zone on the same highway.

In the US, there are some states where there are exceptions. Most notably is my state, Pennsylvania, and a few others where you are also permitted, but not required, to use the left lane so slower moving traffic can merge, which has always seemed ridiculously dangerous to me. On more than one occasion I've seen someone change lanes and nearly get rear-ended doing this.

Bottom line: It's ILLEGAL to drive in the left lane, unless you are passing someone. It doesn't matter if you're driving over the speed limit in the fast lane. Move over if you aren't passing someone. That's it. It seems lots of people cannot follow this simple rule.

What does "slower traffic" even mean? I've just started driving on the highway recently, and I get confused at which lane I should use. I usually go 5-10 MPH over the speed limit, so if I use the right lane, someone going slower than the speed limit gets in my way, and if I use the left lane, I feel like I'm slowing people down. What do I do?

[–]monstercablessuck 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Change lanes if you need to pass, otherwise stay in the right lane.

[–]celestialwolf 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're passing people, be in the left lane. Otherwise, maintain the same speed as those in your lane (or be passed). But whatever you do, stay out of the left lane if you're going to impede the rest of traffic.

[–]ventose 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The thing that surprised me most when I first learned how to drive was that no one obeys the speed limit, at least here in Southern California. On surface streets, people tend to go 5 mph over the speed limit and on the freeway it's usually 10 mph over. I don't like breaking the law so I obey the speed limit and stay in the right most lane most of the time. I still get tail-gated, but I ignore them because "Fuck you, I'm going the speed limit."

[–]vectorjohn 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I guess where I come from a ticket is expensive and raises your insurance. However, it is safe to go about 10 over generally, although a cop could probably use the excuse to pull you over going 5 over if they were suspicious or racial profiling.

[–]mrrabies 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You never should have to speed up beyond your safety zone, but you should never use the left lane for more than passing.

[–]jimaug87 6 points7 points ago

[–]vectorjohn 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Especially when the difference will in most cases be a few minutes. The problem is the difference in how fast it feels like you're going. 10 MPH more feels like a lot, but a 1 hour trip at 55 MPH is only cut by 10 minutes at 65. The improvement gets worse the faster you go.

[–]JustHere4TheDownVote 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Say this all the time, but no one wants to accept it. Throw in stop signs and lights, and it makes speeding even more moot. No one travels enough daily for speeding to make a difference at all. If a min. saves your job or whatever, how about you fucking leave earlier?

[–]nlderek 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My aunt's philosophy is "they shouldn't be going faster anyway" (as she strolls along in the left lane for eternity going exactly the speed limit).

[–]huxley2112 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The reason that this is law (in some states) is to allow those with a legitimate emergency (doctors, volunteer fire, undercover officers, organ runners, etc.) to move faster than the posted limit if they need to without the unsafe weaving or passing on the right.

I will never understand those who feel the need to hold those up behind them. It's not your job to dictate the speed of other drivers. There is no reason for it other than to just be an asshole.

[–]AhhhClem 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maximum traffic flow is determined by the number of lanes not the speed of the vehicles. The only way to exceed the safe number of vehicles per time is for them to follow at unsafe distances.

[–]morbis1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This assumes a static state.

The faster the movement of traffic, the less time the average car spends on a given part of interstate. Therefore, if traffic is moving more efficiently (read: at a higher speed), a given number of lanes can handle more vehicles in the same amount of time.

why are you so road raged at HIGHWAYS? you don't have to do anything. you just press the pedal constantly, look around every so often, listen to music in your air conditioned, comfortable seat, and you will get to your destination.

I can understand being enraged in city traffic - people move like lunatics popping into your path all the time out of nowhere, and you're always on the verge of killing someone. that can be stressful.

but you have some anger issues if you manage to get upset at the tranquility of highways.

Look, I try and be aware of the people behind me, and if I see a rapidly approaching vehicle in my rear view mirror, I'll get over if there's room and it's not going to cause me a lot of trouble. By that, I mean slow down my own trip, or cause interference to other drivers. I don't get out of the way every time somebody is behind me. [–]filya 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For someone who spent 20 months driving 75 miles one way to work I know how hard it is for most people to follow that.

I usually drive at 7-8 over the limit on cruise control and come up to (usually) old people or 2 trailer Fedex trucks who are driving 10 below the limit. They make me release cruise control, slow down 20 mph and follow them for the next 5 minutes before they think they have done enough and move to the right lane.

Even worse, sometimes they don't move at all. And then I start my usual antics - short honk, headlight blink to give them a message.

Most move after that, but there are still those who don't. They feel they might be 'giving in' to an idiotic driver. Little do they realize those 10 minutes make my whole 1.5 hour drive shitty!

edit: Goes without saying, if the right lane was clear, I wouldn't even bother and just pass them on the right.

Well let's look. "Slower" implies there is another variable speed. Slower than what?

How does one decide they are "slower"

If they go the speed limit and someone wants to pass them they would at that moment be slower. Or if someone so chose to speed past the limit, that would render them slower.

So this variable is you. Stop causing these people to be "slower" than you.

On another note living in Cali for almost a year and going back to Oregon I feel this way a lot. I used to be slower.

If i'm going 67 around slow people going like 55 in the right lane and see someone coming up at 75, I get over when safe and go behind him (if there is more passing to be done). Better than then have them tailgate me then cut around me on the right.

That is not what the sign says or means. It means if you are going slower than the person coming up behind you, keep to the right. As far as people who "speed as fast as they want," highway patrol units are paid with your tax money to correct the actions of those people. Your responsibility as a driver isn't to correct the actions of others, but to worry about the safe operation of your own vehicle.
