As a non-native English speaker who's here partially to learn English:

Am I correct in thinking that

every once and awhile

is wrong and it should be

every once in a while

instead?

I haven't found a comment on this so far (usually Reddit is pretty good when it comes to pointing out grammar/spelling mistakes and I've come to rely on that) so I thought I'd ask.

[–]pretz 26 points27 points ago

That's only true when used as an adverb, as in "I will stay here awhile". The OP used it as a noun ("for a while"), and awhile isn't a noun, so it should be written as two words. That said, it's not important.

Non-native English speaker?

I can tell from this one post of yours that you speak English better than anyone I know.

[–]causeofrecession 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Lots of natives speak pretty fluently, just are thrown off by nuances in the language, like 'every once in a while'. Thats why he asked.

[–]Randolpho 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm betting it comes down to literacy rather than fluency.

For example, one that tends to trip up a lot of people is the contraction of "would have", which is commonly pronounced "wood of", and frequently spelled "would of", but is more properly spelled "would've".

I suspect this is the case for the submitter. "Once in a while" might be spoken as "once 'n' while" by somebody who tends toward rapid speaking (that tendency we all have to some extent to blur our words together when speaking). Submitter may even just say it that way out of rote habit.

It could be the submitter was attempting to write something spoken without knowing the correct (look at me getting all prescriptivist) way to spell it.

Then again, it might just be a typo.

[–]causeofrecession 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think you put that a lot better than I did.

[–]mahlzeit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. I'm a native German speaker, and I find English in theory very easy; its syntax is basically a simplified version of German with most of the complicated stuff (like cases) removed. The spelling is harder than German, but not too much.

But to get the nuances right is very, very hard. I'm now watching movies and TV shows in English for over 10 years, I spend a lot of time on the internet reading and writing English but I still often wonder if a phrase like "every once and a while" is really wrong or if it's just one of those little quirks that English has (like "lo and behold", for example), thus my question.

It is actually not a DSLR even though I am dying for one. It is a SX10IS, it is a step above your normal point a shoot, but at its core still a point and shoot. I used the shutter speed priority mode with a 1/800 speed and a 200 ISO.

Thank you! I'm still pretty a pretty big noob when it comes to photography, but I love it. I will head out tomorrow night and try again with your suggestions.

First of all, full moon is probably the worst time to photograph it. The surface lacks contrast and the elevation features (crates, mounatins etc.) are virtually invisible because everything is lit head-on (you can compare it to the flatness effect usually encountered while using a built-in flash).

I'd say wait one week before trying again.

[–]justin_144 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the purpose of photographing a full moon is to photograph a full moon

[–]Annies_Boobs[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay I will do that. I really appreciate the tip!

[–]zjbird 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget to lean back in an arching motion when taking the picture. That's what makes it professional.

http://www.reddit.com/r/itookapicture/comments/o8mud/itap_the_moon/ I'm gonna say you might be wrong on this point ;P

Depends whether you are looking for those details, or just the wow-factor of a big beautiful moon.

The problem is that with cameras like these with super small sensors, stopping down can actually hurt overall sharpness because you run into the effects of diffraction much sooner.

[–]MxM111 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suspect he/she can not do it, because that would push his settings to much lower speed, and at this magnification the hand shake will be large. So unless tripod is used, then I think auto settings works just fine - the camera is smart enough for that. Also, I do not see what is "impressive" about this shot - all you need is enough magnification, and the camera is while fixed lens, is still $400+ camera (by the way, those Cannon zoomers are really great. If only they had larger CMOS sensors for better light sensitivity and color reproduction)

By the way, Annies_Boobs (funny name) is it 20x optical zoom?

[–]zlinky 2 points3 points ago

yea southern hemisphere, I'm in sydney~

the moon also looks like a pug's face if you ignore the snail eyes too.
oh and when I'm not wearing glasses it looks like a yin-yang.

Did you know... the moon never changes it's face?

No matter where you are on the world, the mood will look the same.

See this picture? Looks damn similar!

Just sayin..! Basically.. why would anybody ever take a picture of the full moon? Why not simply reference the one, best quality picture that exists?

It's a great shot, but my philosophical mind just took root!

Did you also know that in every observable planet-moon system there is the same setup? Moons lock into their orbit around a planet and rotate around their own axis at the same rate that they rotate around the planet - thus only showing a single face to the planet's surface.

[–]DuskDragon 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know about every observable planet-moon system, but it does appear to be a large number of them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_locking#List_of_known_tidally_locked_bodies

Not bad, I have been meaning to try to take another picture of the moon. The only one I have is here and I didn't have my tripod handy. It can be difficult to get those sharp features.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted for being polite and honest. I mean it's just a regular picture of a moon with a point and shoot.

Last night I did something similar testing my new camera. Everything was going fine until I switched to video. Had a pretty good zoom of the moon. I'm about to press record but realize I'm not quite centered to instead of pressing record I start tilting the camera a bit and as I do this I see a huge plane fly right in front of the moon in focus and everything. Should have pressed record fucktard.

This is never going to happen again right?

That's a really nice photo considering it wasn't from a dslr. A nice exposure of the moon. Here is one I took awhile back with my DSLR before my zoom lens died on me. http://www.flickr.com/photos/slyphotography/6673630599/in/photostream Great user name by the way, Community fan right?

[–]slyder0244 0 points1 point ago

Thank you. I think I pushed the contrast and blacks a little too much, but I really liked the effect. Tried to really bring out the texture in it. Yeah Community is great.

You could probably push the contrast, sharpness, and blacks on yours to get a similar effect.
