No, this is part of a beautifully written and drawn graphic novel called pride of baghdad. The giraffe was hit by an American bomb.

I got it at the library. It's a short read, so I totally recommend just picking it up at one. Most library's will let you order books to be sent to your local branch too.

Allah(u) Akbar.

God is great.

Among other uses, it's what Muslims yell when firing rockets, acting as suicide bombers or otherwise engaging in holy war.

Before reading the top comment, I thought the giraffe was a suicide bomber.

They also say it to express happiness when they score a goal in football, a full strike in bowling or get something achieved. It can also be said when you're facing injustice, , since Allahu Akbar literally means "god is greater" as in "God is greater than your limited understanding of this phrase" :P

But it's one of the most misunderstood phrases in Arabic by Western audiences. That's why I added what I added. The other day I got a travel visa from a difficult embassy and when I told my pal he was like "allah akbar!" lol

[–]Ironicallypredictabl 0 points1 point ago

I was sure the giraffe sneezed with such force that it's head exploded. And that the comic was a graphic commentary on the giraffe's sprecial physiology, which has something to do with blood pressure in the head of the animal.

I honestly just want to see someone besides Mark Millar get obscenely rich off of comics. So many awesome creator's deserve a greater level of recognition, the plus with the Hollywood route is the injection of new and interesting ideas that play with convention.

I'm waiting for a Transmetropolitan television series.

And Red was an abomination of an Ellis' masterpiece.

[–]ZorbaTHut 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Red was great in the same way Starship Troopers was great. Namely, it was a really fun movie, and it's got the same name as another piece of art that is also really good.

[–]HuruHara 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I get that the movie can be enjoyed separate to the comic and I'm sure they are those who enjoy the movie Red, too.

But in my opinion, a movie following the comic faithfully would have been good, too, probably better.

A couple of NCOs from my old U.S. Army unit encountered a lion from the Baghdad Zoo during the invasion. According to them they fired a couple warning bursts from a machine gun and it ran off. But not like it was scared, more like it decided it had better shit to do.

[–]TheFrankTrain 21 points22 points ago

It says "allahu akbar"--God is great. Although the expression can be used out of gratitude (kind of like "thank god"), or horror ("dear god"), etc.

[–]mustafa36 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The literal meaning of that is "God is greater!", not "God is great" and not "God is the greatest."

This phrase "Allahu Akbar" is used mainly in prayer (to engage in prayer, to move from one phase to another in prayer, and to finish the prayer).

What it actually means is: God is greater than everything, thus while praying nothing can disturb me while I am communicating with God...

[–]jabberfeed 1 point2 points ago

That's fascinating, I appreciate the info! (:

[–]tuscanspeed 1 point2 points ago

Would it also be the appropriate phrase to use in a familiar situation to express He's greater than anything mentioned? For instance if someone is talking about how strong the ocean waves are? Would that phrase be used here to express He's greater?

Idly curious.

[–]mustafa36 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, there are more appropriate phrases for that, such as:

  • Subhan Allah: blessings be to God for his wonderful creations.

  • Ma sha'a Allah: God's will(EDIT: and creation,) always amazes me (closest translation I could make)

I'll tell you if I got a better translation.
