My go-to reaction to someone being sad is trying to make them laugh. For instance, last year I walked in on my roommate crying her eyes out, laying on her bed with tissues everywhere. Turned out it was the anniversary of her parents' deaths. I don't really remember the conversation, but I somehow got her on the topic of running around on campus naked and something about frogs and spaghetti...she was laughing her ass off.

When I was in high school I would occasionally stumble on a girl crying in the bathroom. Since it was a small school, if we didn't KNOW each other, we definitely recognized each other. I basically would do this exact thing to make those girls laugh or smile and then I'd ask what was wrong and give them a hug before I left :)
