The rule for textbooks:

If it's optional it doesn't exist If its required, it's in the library. Don't buy it until its been actively used at least twice.

My rule:

If it can't find it for less than $30 on the internet, I just have to listen more during class

or find the ebook online.

Serious question here: Since I'm going off to college soon, are eBooks truly much cheaper than their textbook counterparts?

[–]Das_Keyboard 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I meant like torrent or download the ebook illegally.

Are there any good torrent sites for college course ebooks?

[–]Das_Keyboard 1 point2 points ago

not torrents but ebdb.net library.nu ebookee possibly what.cd if you can get an invite and if they bring the site back up soon.

Minimally cheaper (as in you can get the ebook for $70 on a retail $100, but with no chance of reselling).

However, I suspect the author was referring to finding his ebooks on the high sees of the internet.

There's too many leechers on a lot of these books...

During my first semester in college I made the mistake of paying full price for the physical books.

Pirating is the cheapest option and the one I pursue the most. I spend hours crafting my search terms in order to nab the book I need. If that fails, I try to find legitimate ebook versions, and if that fails, I just rent the physical deadwood ones because renting is usually cheaper than buying and means you don't have to worry about stacks of useless books taking up space after the semester ends. Selling them back to the internet is out of the question because sites pay so little it's not even worth the time, yet another reason to rent/pirate.

And more often than not, the professors don't even use the book. You're going to have classes where you're literally never going to touch the book, despite it being touted as "required" by the assholes you call professors.

[–]FishToaster 2 points3 points ago

Pretty much the same. I spent $400 buying all the 'required' books in advance as an incoming freshmen. From there on out, I just showed up and waited a week to see if the teacher actually assigned stuff out of it. Turns out that no teacher expects you to actually have the book the first week or so. I think I spent less than $400 on books the entire rest of my college career.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty much the same for me, My first semester I bought all of the "required" books. Last semester I bought no books despite having quite a few "required." I only buy books if there's homework assigned from them.

My school's library has ONE copy of each textbook (only a good portion of the books, some aren't even there), and they are torn all to hell and you're only allowed to check it out.

My math teacher just said HW is emailed to us and is not from the book, while he also emails us lecture notes. I think that "required" book is no longer required.

All textbooks are optional. I stopped buying textbooks after a few semesters of never opening the textbooks I bought. Ended with a 3.7 GPA, good enough for me.

I was the same way until I started with math/statistics/chemistry. You have to have the book for those or you're boned.

That's what it seems like to most people, but the most successful people often worked the hardest to get to where they are. Of course some people have it really easy, but they have a whole different set of problems.

I feel like id only be able to find 2 out of 7 of my books. But none the less my old Android Tablet would have been perfect for this.

Anyway, the number one reason I cant find my books online is because they come bundled with software or tear our assignment sheets.

[–]MadDogTannen 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Throughout my time in college, I probably only bought about half of the books I was supposed to. Most of the books were a total waste of time and money, so I would just wing it. I had a great GPA too. I don't know why people think you need to buy the book just because the teacher says so. Wait and see if he's gonna actually use the book before laying down $200.

In Europe, we use things called "university libraries".

In the US, I had to download and (optionally) print.

Download the PDF's of the book you need, bring them to a print shop, slip the guy a 5 to print and bind them all.

I'm not sure how it works in the US, but over here we keep photocopied books around all the time, at a fraction of the price, over at any copy/print shop. Is it because of tougher piracy laws?

My rule: DO NOT EVER BUY THE TEXTBOOK! Unless you find yourself actually requiring it at-least two or three times (the first couples times, borrow it off a classmate). The only times this has happened to me is if something has questions right from the textbook. This has saved me literally thousands.

Always wait until after the first week of classes. The professors usually tell you if you really need to buy it or if going to the library is enough. I usually buy it if I have a class with open book midterms/exams but other than that, library for me!

The $200 North American hardcover textbook sometimes has a $15 international softcover variant.

Also, if you find that an expensive textbook is not truly required, but still like to have a textbook, ask around and find out about other alternative, cheaper, and often better texts you can use in place of the "required" one.

Son, the textbooks are always, always optional. So is showing up to class. It just depends on whether you want decent grades or not. And often even that can be accomplished without showing up or buying books. It just depends on the class and the student.
