two possibilities for this still being terrible:

everyone rushes the door, people crushed, riots, door is actually locked but people still hopelessly try and open it, general despair

they never call 6 ever. not 66, not 36, not 666, no sixes ever. and it just keeps going with you being skipped.

It matters to those who come after them. If the astronauts that come after them see that we don't respect the risk and sacrifice that goes into what they do, it matters. Sure there will still be those who do it out of a sense of duty to mankind, but isn't that all the more reason to show respect?

[–]UncleTogie 3 points4 points ago

Humor is how humans deal with tragedy. The worse the tragedy, the darker the humor. I could show an example with a pic, but don't want to get reamed over it.

If I'm a fucking astronaut, I'll fly if there's opportunity! I'm flying your not, that's all there is to it, unless I'm gonna save a planet from Armageddon. Then your respect is highly needed.

[–]eriwinsto 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These people are astronauts. They're some of the most highly respected (Lisa Nowak's personal life excluded) people on the planet. They're what every little kid who plays with rockets wants to be someday.

Would you make fun of a firefighter who died in a burning building? The space program is filled with brave people seeking knowledge, and those who have died deserve the same respect as those who live today.

[–]TrueThenFalse 3 points4 points ago

Came here to post this. I find the "lol they burned up" jokes to be unfunny only because they are incorrect. They had several moments to think "oh god I'm going to die, I'm going to die" before they actually died by the impact with the water, which is much more horrifying IMO. If I'm going to die in a horrible way I'd rather it be quick and unexpected, not contemplate my violent death for moments before.

When i was ten i was terrified that i was the perfect candidate for nasa. Somehow i was going to be selected for the space program. The fear was that my space ship would be destroyed in the mission. Just to help further your fear of ice skates: I used to play hockey, and once after one of the games I had just taken my skate off and then another guy still wearing skates comes walking by and accidentally steps on my bare foot. Ouch.

Pretty sure they risked their lives to be able to tell everyone that they got TO GO TO FUCKING OUTER SPACE. You can do plenty of science here on earth if that is really the reason. These are people who really thought going to space would be so fucking awesome they were ready to take the risk of riding a giant bomb to get there. Things went wrong. That's pretty stupid and in poor taste IMO...and I laugh at the dark stuff

everything that is funny is in poor taste to someone, that is generally what makes it funny. You can say these poor innocent astronauts died this unfair death.... Um, pretty sure that if you volunteered to ride a giant firework into space, you knew the risks involved. With great risks come great rewards , and sometimes great tragedy. It's all a part of thrillseeking - which being an astronaut is. This is not really any more tragic than a guy who climbs a 2 mile high rock face with no safety cable and falls down. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It's all a part of the game.

I was on the way to the airport when I heard the news on the radio that the shuttle had been out of contact for longer than they expected on re-entry.

They said it in the usual way that made it sound totally reasonable. Of course, the guys in the shuttle aren't making a funny when they're in the re-entry interface. They said the crew was 'a couple of minutes late checking in' and I knew they were fucked. It just doesn't work that way :-(.

Pretty funny hearing snide remarks from non-Americans, many of whom belong to countries that have never even launched a satellite into space by themselves, let alone take on the risky, complicated task of putting humans in orbit. Here's a fun fact: No country in the EU or Canada, Australia, NZ has ever put a human into orbit. The only time they've had astronauts is when they hitched a ride with either the US or Russia, mostly the US.

Reddit is getting excruciatingly stupid. People are very selective in how they apply their feigned righteous indignation. One minute everyone is having paroxysms of moral outrage over something those evil Americans did, the next moment they are laughing over a tragedy like a bunch of fucking ghouls.

You're all a bunch of fucking retards. Seriously. It is surreal.

I read it. I'm from Houston, and I know a lot of astronauts. These comments make me sick. Sure, it was "only 14 people," but those 14 people represented the dreams of billions.

Witty one-liners have their place, but not here.

I didn't laugh and I didn't find this remotely funny. I am not even remotely offended either. It's just meh. Or a sign of maturity. Or apathy. Or a combination of both. Still don't find it funny though. Juvenile humor I guess.

Downvote me if you want, but I don't find any humor whatsoever in innocent humans' deaths. Fuck you if you find this funny.

Just another thing that pisses me off about some of you--you'll upvote front page posts supporting people who need transplants and pictures of grandparents who are terminally ill, but you won't find the common morality not to laugh at a national tragedy in which human lives were ended in a horrific way. Grow up. And I'm sure I'll get comments telling me to lighten up and "it's okay because it's a joke." No. Fuck you.

[–]TheAnswer2Everything 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. I'm sorry I can't save your post with only one upvote to give as I'm sure these fucks will downvote you for having an inkling of morality.

I won't downvote, that's your opinion to have. But imo NOTHING is off limits as far as humor and jokes go. 9/11? holocaust? this? All go idgaf. I'm sorry if this offends you, but it's the way I (and obviously many here) feel.

Says the person riffing on a Colonoscopy. What, you think Farrah Fawcett dying was a joke?!?

Let me explain why I joke about this. If given a choice between laughing, and losing my mind, I'll take the laugh every single time.

I wouldn't say you're going to hell. It's kind of funny. But since hearing The Long Winters' The Commander Thinks Aloud, I can't laugh about this. Lyrics are here.

It really gives you an idea of the regret they must have felt while realizing they weren't going to make it home. Amazing song.

So, my dad and I, when I was a kid, we'd shoot those model rockets for funsies. Daddy-daughter bonding or whatever. Anywho, he had one of the Challenger that he bought... before... you know. He used it as a learning opportunity and taught me about what happened, and we were always very solemn about it, and would have a moment of silence before takeoff, etc. yadda yadda get to the good part, Creepy.

Long story short, one time it hit the ground after a launch and, well, I hate to say it "exploded" but it suffered significant damage upon impact. He epoxy'd it back together, retired it, and told me not to tell mommy about it. In retrospect we probably just shouldn't have been launching that one.

Also, one time we almost killed a cow with a rocket. But that, my friends, is a story for another day.
