This reminds me of the famous Douglas Adams line from Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy.

Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.

I chuckled quite a bit when I saw this on FB in spanish. For some reason I found it funnier. "Regresen, ya hicimos mierda todo".

Is that how you would say it in Spanish? Doesn't that say we made everything shit?

Fuck now I'm confuse. Hope this makes sense.

I wonder how this extremely pessimistic outlook was created. You know, that we just ruined everything. Thats not how it HAS to be. Please start dreaming again.

[–]Sevilst 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's hard to be a dreamer when the general consciousness doesn't give a shit about future generations and has a mentality of "They can deal with it" or "Lets just keep using until there isn't anymore, then we'll figure it out."

Sure some will argue that in itself is how evolution works, when we get to a tipping point and NEED to survive we find a way. Regardless, humanity has an obsession with looking young, living as long as possible, even preventing death. Pretty selfish, our species future is a grim one, I easily see us nearly destroying ourselves completely and having to start everything over before we truly have some understanding of how to handle our own technology.

I think you're making your own life a drag.

Things really aren't that bad. You know what would be shitty? Living in France as German tanks were rolling over the Rhineland or slowly dying of radiation poisoning from the atom bombs dropped in Nagasaki.

People are waking up to the blessings of freedom and now we have the internet where we can all solve problems even easier by combining our collective intelligence.

It's fucking awesome so don't waste bandwidth complaining but try to learn something- nothing can be solved by a single entity, be it governments or whatever, only the spontaneous organization of free peoples through free exchange can anything get done.

I'm not complaining at all, I love my life and everything in it. Hell without modern medicine and current technology I would have died twice by now. I'm simply being a realist here, yeah life is a lot worse outside of my U.S. bubble but look at the big picture, the future of our species is only going to turn out a few ways;

1) We all have some sort of awakening (everyone on this planet) and live in peace and harmony.

2) A world war breaks out and more than half the worlds population is killed, a lot of technology is lost and a new Dark Age begins.

3) We make it to a certain point in time where we can colonize other planets and branch out in this solar system and others.

4) Make some sort of contact with another intelligent form of life.

I strongly believe that the most realistic outcome of this is a global war, or self species destruction. Whether that be all resources run out, or that world war is over those resources. We wont get to the point of the positives or "Global Collectiveness" until we experience near extinction.

I may live my life as a pessimistic realist, but no matter what the outcome is of any of my daily interactions or experiences, I am always happy with the it because it's better than I presumed it to be.

I live each day knowing that every moment is going to be better than I thought, and even if it's not...I was already prepared for that outcome. I don't see how that is making my life a drag at all.

5) the polywell fusor is given enough funding and we enter a golden age leading to number 3.

What evidence do you have of this?

On the contrary, I have a number of friends from other countries through the internet and travel. There is an unheard amount of dialogue between people, and that's all that matters. I had a lovely Russian coworker and it was a kind of life changing realization when I thought how the U.S. military once was pointing nuclear weapons at where she now lives! And our government was ready to end civilization as we know it.

To even contemplate such a disaster is only possible if you're truly in the dark about who we share the planet with.

But again, there's very little evidence of catastrophe but no shortage of scenarios we could invent. I think if you take a good look at history and look at today's conditions, I'm personally encouraged.

What evidence do you have of this?

Human history.

On the contrary, I have a number of friends from other countries through the internet and travel.

-Implying your opinion is more valid than mine because you have "a number of friends from other countries and on the internet."

I had a lovely Russian coworker and it was a kind of life changing realization when I thought how the U.S. military once was pointing nuclear weapons at where she now lives!

How about when the Soviets had a "false alarm" and almost launched on us? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov

Hah, that's not what I mean dude. I'm saying world war is unimaginable because people are so interconnected now.

[–]Sevilst 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your citing your sources and opinions as your friends from other countries through the internet and travel. Dialogue between people is not all that matters as you said, in fact most dialogue between people is not intellectual and filled with bias nonfactual opinions.

If you did a little research on your own time about the history of our species and war, you'd have a more realistic look on our future.

[–]jongglr8 1 point2 points ago

World history, yes, is full of war and violence. However, history has also shown us that our tendency of violence decreases as time goes. I'm not saying you're wrong, but there IS a glimmer of hope.

So, Mr. Astute Student of the history, you don't think that there are any new, confounding variables in your theory of inevitable doom?

I asked for evidence- history is merely a record of events. Conclusions drawn from history require a sort of theory- i.e., what is it that will cause said world war?

Many people could predict the world wars- there was concrete evidence to show countries were itching for a war. It didn't just come out of nowhere. The build up to world war two really began much earlier when the Nazis came into power and there were visible signs of an arms build-up and a real desire to conquer.

If anything, there is evidence that the U.S. empire will be drawn down if you look at the prevailing attitudes of the people.

Your citing your sources and opinions as your friends from other countries through the internet and travel.

Well, perhaps one of the confounding variables that I alluded to earlier, really does play a major role in ending war as we know it. Maybe it's the thing we're using right now to communicate (however distasteful said communication is quickly becoming).

It's the fucking internet. Really, you must take into account the highly interconnected network of communication and trade before you start talking about theories of war because it's unprecedented in history.

While internet is common is 1st world countries, its extremely uncommon in lots of parts of the world.

Hell, i live in Egypt where 40% of the population can read or right, never-mind internet. Yet still Egypt is considered a 2nd world country and much better of than dozens of other African countries.

"humanity has an obsession with looking young, living as long as possible, even preventing death"

I think people are obsessed with making ends meet at this point, and maybe not be shot by a drone or a powertripping cop (but I guess that qualifies as 'avoiding death')

[–]Bipolarruledout -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is there's that whole "survival of the fittest" thing. Tell me what humans are fit for again? Besides wasting, polluting, and generating numbers in a computer that we somehow call "money"?

That's going to be one hell of a paradigm shift when we discover that none of those things actually keep you from starving to death. But um... "progress" right? Sustainability be damned.

[–]jackskidney 3 points4 points ago

Humans are a minute spec in the inconceivably massive sea of the Universe, not to mention time. Even if Earth is the only instance of life in existence it's not as if we posses the power to truly kill all life. The forces of nature that we observe will continue to take place long after our existence and currently in other parts of the Universe. There will still be mountains, and rivers, likely life. I think one can take hope from that alone, regardless of your opinion of humanity.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not the point. We're just killing ourselves and attempting to justify it.

[–]Bipolarruledout -1 points0 points ago

Spreading civilization doesn't make people happy, it makes them less so. The only reason we do it is because economics is growth based.

[–]ThrustVectoring 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spreading civilization doesn't make people happy, it makes them less so.

I don't know about that at all. What I do know is that the reason why so many people belong to civilized and particularly westernized countries has nothing at all to do with how happy being in a civilized/westernized country makes them. It's completely uncorrelated.

Technology and science are where we're really exceeding and everything is awesome. Otherwise, there's still so much fucked up stuff that needs fixing.

[–]Bipolarruledout -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not that complicated. None of this shit actually makes us happy yet we keep doing it anyway. Who invented this delusion that "progress" makes people happy and why do we continue to believe it? Collective insanity?

[–]schwab002 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]neilmcc 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. To quote the inimitable C.K. Louis, everything is amazing and nobody is happy.

I think this sort of pessimism is a chronic inability to find joy in life and so they blame the world for it rather than trying to change themselves.

Well, we're trained from childhood to adulthood do what we're told by our school teachers/parents/society and it's just a miserable affair because we never got to learn to actually be free humans who really dig life for the miracle that it is.

[–]Ijustlostmyjengajam 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Louis CK was talking about not being able to appreciate the miracle of modern technology such as airplanes, cell phones, etc. Humanity on a global scale absolutely does fuck everything up. Nuclear distasters, oil spills, hunting to extinction, possibly global warming. This is clearly what "we fucked everything up" refers to.

[–]neilmcc 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is a matter of scale. Weigh an oil spill to a volcanic eruption or the recent nuclear leak to actual bombs dropped in Japan- it is perhaps not so terrible.

There will always be disasters and bad shit- that's just the nature of things. It's just our media and collective perception does not weigh events in a proper manner.

[–]Ijustlostmyjengajam 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, none of these events are disastrous in themselves. It's the combined weight of all of these things that leads to destroyed ecosystems, extinction, and hugely reduced habitats.

We haven't fucked everything up yet but there's a clear trend which way we're headed. And I'm not saying that's a guarantee in the future, we could definitely help turn it around with technology, but our attitudes probably won't change until things start to get bad.

[–]Bipolarruledout 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, there will always be disasters and bad shit because WE ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN or fail to prevent it. Then we assume there's nothing we can do about it which is complete bullshit. We just don't want to because shinny things.

[–]RedAnarchist -2 points-1 points ago

That last part sounds like bullshit as college often presents many people with quite a bit of free time to do whatever the fuck they want.

From what I've seen, not a lot of people take advantage of that opportunity.

[–]neilmcc 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And what are they doing in college? Trying to ease the dullness of life by drinking and fucking.

They don't take the opportunity because they've been taught since the age 5 to be reactive and passive, not proactive (or rather, being curious little creatures is the natural state of being a human, not something you have to learn but something lost through the conditioning of schooling.)

This isn't a particularly original idea- see John Holt or John Taylor Gatto about how society handles the young.

And some of these "other countries" have Tribal warfare and a shortage of healthy adult males and so they get 8 years olds wired on Heroin and send them at the enemy with AK-47s. The females are more valuable cause they get to have sex with the ones that live!

Perhaps, given that every repost has several complaints about reposts but the reposts keep coming proves that complainers don't actually achieve anything?

or because people are unoriginal

This entire site is devoted to posting links to stuff other people have done, so we can talk about it.

The endless "I've seen this before, how dare you repost, now I'm going to spend half a day ranting about who got karma for reposting" complaints make even the worst unoriginal rage comics seem decent.

This image was better when there was a photo of Justin Bieber on the right.

He does now also represents religious insanity and by doing so a large part of the flaw of homo sapiens so it would cover more than you'd initially think.

Yeah, we fucked up everything. You know how you used to spend all day hunting squirrels and lived to the ripe old age of 30 if you were lucky? Now we live to 100 and press buttons. We eat meat and vegetables every night regardless of season and can travel in an hour a distance greater than you'd travel in a life time.

But we fucked it up. Go back to your cave. /hippy

Ah US education. Well that picture is a spoof on a classical portrayal of something called evolution, and in this spoof the end result of the evolution that lead to our species concludes that the evolution of the species that came to be the present day human didn't go well and had an unwelcome routing leading to a fucked up group of creatures I would say.

you are being presumptuous and pretentious. you have no idea how educated I am. I understand what the picture is implying. I am asking for some examples of what has been ruined by man.

Let's start with the environment, the intolerance, or this, not to mention this too.

you think these things are bad, there are environmentalits, human rights activists, anti nuclear war treaties. humans are respobsible for those things as well.

That is an indication that we are trying to 'go back'.

No I was being funny, in the part about US education, stereotyping joke.

But seriously yes you can argue about how bad things are and if human species is a horror or not, but this wasn't posted to r/philosophy but r/funny and I think anybody can get the joke even without it first having to be a proven established determined view. And in fact that there merely is a possibility is enough to make it work because the joke is taking the familiar drawing of evolutionary development and then have the last stage be able to speak to the previous stages and go back, that in itself is already amusing.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. I was really tired when I was writing that stuff. at some point I realised it was just a joke. lol
