A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

Now this is what a boss should be: awesome, competent and compassionate. I want
to work for this guy, a dream that I share with a lot of game developers. To have
the ability to show kindness towards subordinates is rare these days. Gabe's babies
are superior products, thanks to highly motivated employees like Erik.

Interestingly, a small force working cohesively and rapidly can have have a disproportionate effect. For example, WoW has 10 million subscribers. If they lost 1% (100,000)of their accounts in a day, or received 100,000 similar complaints in a day, they would likely take action. It creates the appearance of a strong trend.

Special interest groups use this in politics. If a congressman receives 100 letters about a topic within a few days, he'll probably think it's important.

EA (NASDAQ:EA). Number of employees: 8000. Revenue: US$3.654 billion (FY 2010).

Valve Corporation (privately held). Number of employees: 260. Revenue: Unknown, but according to FADE analysis Valve brought in about US$0.97 billion in game sales for 2010, of which Valve keeps a percentage and passes on the rest to the developers/publishers.

Now Valve doesn't release sales or revenue information publicly and does not work with FADE. But until Valve does list itself, FADE's analysis is as good as any. But the point is despite Valve being a huge success story, EA is an even huger one. EA wouldn't trade places with Valve even if it were an option.

[–]b_dan 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't this show EA makes about $450,000 per employee, but our best guess is that Valve makes about $3,700,000 per employee (i.e., over 8x as much)? I'd rather invest in Valve, if it were an option.

[–]fngkestrel 86 points87 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But there in lies the rub. The fact that we can't invest makes Valve beholden to no one and keeps the company from having to churn out shit each quarter to make numbers.

[–]Nurger 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nice use of rub, kestrel.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, I bet that the first thing you would do if you were the majority shareholder in the Valve Corporation would be to hire a million more employees to put your companies revenue into the trillions!

[–]Moh7 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, since a portion of that billion is going to the game devs.

We really can't know the true number.

[–]Pogotross 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just using revenue is a pretty terrible way to compare the companies. EA lost $276 million last year, but Valve had sales grow 100% for the 7th year? While you can't speak for EA as a single entity, investors would probably love to move their money from EA to Valve.

[–]terqui 57 points58 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Valve going public would ruin everything Valve is and everything Valve stands for. Want to know why EA is the way it is? Its board of directors. Want to know why Valve is the way it is? Its board of Gabe.

[–]Autograph 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The idea of Gabe just sitting in a board room by himself in silence, occasionally saying 'ah ha!' or 'good idea!' as if one of his imaginary co-boardees suggested something for the company is hilarious. What's even more funny is that even if that's actually what happens then it's ten times more efficient than any board meeting that EA could ever have.

[–]Taniwha_NZ 44 points45 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, it's definitely against the general grain. But,you should remember that Gabe is the part-owner of Valve, and it's still a fairly small company, and that lets him develop pretty good relations with all his employees, if he wanted to.

In such a situation, the boss is highly likely to do stuff like this for employees who hit some rough times; most owners of companies like Valve really do see their staff as a kind of extended family.

To whit: Back in 2002 when I had some health problems, I had to walk away from my desk one day without any warning and I didn't come back or get in touch with anyone for several days.

By the time I was able to talk to them, I knew from the doctors that I would need at least 6 months to recover and be well enough to work. I was the senior developer in a small software company with about 20 employees total.

I fully expected to be cut lose with no ceremony. Apart from anything else, I had been extremely critical of the company owner for quite some time before this happened, and on a day-to-day basis we were barely even on speaking terms.

Yet he came into hospital to see me, and just said to take however long I needed. No questions asked, and he then paid for expensive rehab work that I wouldn't have been able to afford on my own, and wasn't covered by insurance.

It's true that it would have caused them huge problems to lose me forever, but losing me for the six months was really almost as bad. And they never even tried to get me to do any work from home or anything. I returned to work after six months, then a couple of months later when salary reviews were due I got a surprisingly large raise.

You can't buy the sort of loyalty that comes from being treated that well. It's a real shame that only about 5% of CEOs understand this.

[–]08mms 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe in some sense he did buy it based on opportunity costs and payments for medical treatments. Kudos to executives who can balance running a business with being a respectable human being though. I hope you get to code something that makes/saves the business a stack of money.

[–]BoomBoomYeah 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And also to whit: I live in the US and work for a small (40 employees) company that's seen double digit growth even during the poor economy. When I returned after being out sick for a week+ with H1N1 (on top of other medical problems), many of my duties had promptly been given away despite being on very friendly terms with my boss. Since then I have circled the drain at work with my ongoing health issues and there have also been implications that my benefits will be taken away if I do not maintain full time status.

tl;dr want work valve and/or in a first world country

I don't understand the logistics of this. If I hire an accountant and a month later they tell me they're going to be out sick for six months - I would be expected to hold that position for that time? What do I do in the meantime? Then I get to fire the temporary accountant when the other one feels better? How is that "less wrong"? Do I have to pay the sick accountant while they are out? How do you stop people from abusing the system?

I think it's a good idea, but it seems like legislating morality is often hard, and there's not enough bureaucrats to clean up the mess.

[–]KatjaFrankfurt 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty much what has already been said by others. (Speaking about Germany now, but I guess it's similar in most countries) It obviously only applies in larger companies, not if you have only 3 employees, and it only applies for someone who has been with a company for 6 months or longer.

And companies have to deal with "missing" employees all the time, someone's always on vacation etc. - you split the work up among other employees, you hire someone temporarily, you hire a replacement and find a new place for the ill employee when he returns.

You have to pay him for 6 weeks, then his insurance kicks in and takes over. He obviously needs to see a doctor and show proof of his illness.

Yeah, it's a hassle from a purely monetary point of view, but you have a responsibility to your employees, they're not just machines that you can replace when they stop functioning properly.

Shareholder Value vs. Stakeholder Value, it simply is a different attitude towards business.

[–]The_Olmec_Machine 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"you have a responsibility to your employees, they're not just machines that you can replace when they stop functioning properly." Is there any way to get this message to America?

[–]giggsey 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand too much about this, but I believe what happens is that the employee has to get proof (eg. doctors note). Then the company pays them statuary sick pay, which gets funded by the government.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Something like that happened to my family. My father was working in a factory (Acerinox, Spain) when he was suffering from cancer (not yet diagnosed) and went to the hospital. He wouldn't make it, because of the late diagnose of the tumor, so both my brother (at the time nearly 18, legal age in Spain) and my mother went to talk to my father's bosses and tell them if my brother could occupy my father's job, if he didn't make it. They agreed. Now, my father didn't make it, it has been 6 years or so, and that "promise" is still over the air.

I just wanted to tell about this, and tell you that you are very lucky for having a boss like that. :)

[–]carguy1983 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Over the air" is not an idiom in English - sorry for your loss but it's not clear what the boss said.

[–]seanbergmanrules 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He probably meant "up in the air", implying that the promise had not yet been fulfilled.

[–]Alxe 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Totally this. "Over the air", literally, would mean "Sobre el aire" in Spanish, so I just tried to translate it as faithfully as I could.

Same thing here-- I developed severe Crohn's disease this past summer, and my boss has been incredibly understanding. I basically come and go "as I please" (i.e. I work when I'm not in doctor's appointments, getting transfusions, in the hospital, etc). The job is boring as fuck and I'd be gone if not for the disease, but I'm very grateful to have such understanding and patient employers.

I dunno how it is for anyone else here in England, but this has been the norm for me with every boss I've ever had.

I remember being really ill one time when I worked at at Wilkinsons (a large hardware chain); I actually collapsed at work. I called my boss after I'd been to the doctor to tell him I may not be in for a few weeks. Now this guy was a real slave driver so I wasn't expecting much understanding. To my surprise, he said exactly the same thing as Gabe, that my job now was to get better, and I needn't worry about anything else.

The knowledge that my job was secure and I didn't need to worry really helped my recovery and I was well and back at work sooner than my doctor had predicted.

My boss was still a merciless slave-driver, but I didn't mind as much anymore.

In Finland, it's not just a good boss that says you can get leave from work, it's the law. Plus it's paid by the employer for at least the 10 first days and thereafter you get a daily allowance from the state.

Maybe it's just that in USA most bosses are assholes.

It's not necessarily the bosses, it's the whole corporate system. Employees in the US are viewed as interchangeable, expendable money-sinks that are unfortunately still required for the shareholders to make more money doing nothing.

[–]dnew 12 points13 points ago

I think it depends on what kind of job you're doing. Being a creative driver at a game company? Sure. Lots of bosses will do that even in the USA. Would the same go for the janitor or the cafeteria chef? Probably far fewer companies would treat both the same.

The difference is that if a boss did this in the UK they'd be risking hell, socially and potentially business. Everyone would think they're a cunt and the media would love a story like that to kick some fuss up about and get the guy his job back.

The difference between the UK and America is that we've got a tonne of employee laws stopping bosses from being complete cunts, we've had them for a long time and it's caused a culture where bosses need to stay within certain boundaries of decency. Often we forget that we've got it pretty good in Britain, we're pretty ahead of the rest of the world in terms of forward thinking, tolerance and the like. It's just a shame that our accounts are in such a mess.

When I was 21 I worked at a very small company making websites and I had an amazing boss too. This is how a usual work day looked like:

  • 2 PM, it's a very hot day and we have a lot of work to do. My boss walks in the development room and says: "It's a pretty hot day today. Hey everybody, stop working and lets go the nearest pub. I'm buying ice cream and beer for everyone."
  • My co-workers and I were working on something when we suddenly hear our boss shouting from the other side of the office: "Guys, check your mailbox, I just sent you something very important". When we checked our mailboxes we found a lot of porn pictures that he found on some random site.
  • When I told my boss that I would propose to my fiancee, he said: "Go to this jewelry store. The owner is a very close friend of mine. Choose the most beautiful wedding ring there and don't worry about the price... I'm paying for it!"

He was the greatest boss ever and a very nice person too.

Edit: I left this job because, as I said, it was a very small company and even though I had a fantastic boss (he was my best man in my wedding), he couldn't pay me a decent salary. I stayed 2 years at this job then I left to work at IBM. The salary at IBM was 4 times greater.

I don't understand. I'm not trying to troll or anything, really. I am just genuinely curious about this: do ill people get fired in the US? If you have cancer and spend Christmas in the hospital in the Netherlands, no way in hell you are going to lose your job. Your boss will send you flowers and you will be paid full salary for at least two years. Do you get fired over being sick in the US? Is this why this story is so special?

Last year I got a slipped disk because of all the lifting I had to do while working, I was in the hospital for 2 weeks because of the extreme pain I had, the boss called every day asking if I could go to work again. After 4 weeks at home I went back to work and had a meeting with the boss where he told me that I had to sign a paper where it said that I couldn't get sick for 6 months, I had to sign it because they would fire me if I didn't.

After 4 months of working hard, I decided to take 1 week of vacations. On the first day of my vacation I was rushed to the hospital with an appendicitis, I had a surgery and then I called my boss telling him what happened and that I was going to stay at home for 2-3 weeks while recovering, he basically told me that I had violated the contract I had signed. I arrived at work 3 weeks later and had another meeting with the big boss, he told me that it wasn't normal for someone to be sick for so many days. He asked me what I was going to do in order not to get sick again and I had to sign another contract where it basically said the same shit, but that if it happened again I would get fired.

Edit: we even had a case of a guy dropping dead because of heart failure due to stress, and they managed to send a guy suffering with cancer to do the hard work, he died some months later.

You want to know why Gabe is such a good boss, aside from being a good person at heart that is?

He's not a businessman, he never will be. His mantra was to make a great game, and it sold so well. He realized what potential the Half-Life community had, and he hired modders to work for him.

He stayed true to his mantra with the release of Steam. At that point the man focused on the customer. Steam improved over time and only got better. Make your customers happy, and they become the loyal fans they are today.

There's a damn good reason the Valve fans are amongst the most rabid fans of all. (In a good way... usually).

[–]crazyfingers619 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I shudder to think of a world without Valve. When everyone else is trying to fuck over gamers and monopolize the market so they can make millions off bullshit, Valve is giving thousands the chance to sell their game on a universal platform with no bias, just games for gamers and with mad class.

As an indie dev myself, thanks valve! Not sure I'd even have a shot at making a personal project if it wasn't for distribution services like steam.

at 1170 comments already, this is going to get buried, but,

i went to visit valve as a kid around year 2005. got to playtest portal when the developers were only up to around level 10 or 12, and some other awesome shit.

while i heard nothing of this story, i just thought i'd say that the lasting impression of VALVe is that it is truly one of the best run companies i've ever heard of. i talked to several employees during my visit about being employed there and what it was like. if you become unhappy working for them, and want to leave, they will do almost whatever it takes to correct the situation, be it scheduling, monetary, physical, whatever the issue may be. they let their employees operate on their own schedules, just as long as the work is completed; however, they heavily monitor the time each person spends behind a desk(gamers will understand that it's easy to get lost at the desk chair) -- to the point that if someone isn't spending enough time at home with their family / kids, etc, they will literally FORCE them to go home and take an amount of time off. they let everyone operate on their own habits but will pay for most anything that the employee may need, IE gym memberships, yoga, whatever. they make sure everyone has ergonomic office-wares. there is a barber and a masseuse that come in a few times a week for scheduled appointments with employees-- and yes they have their own specific rooms to do haircuts and massage's in. the hiring process is incredibly difficult(albeit i recall that the Portal crew's story was a tad different), but once you're in, the VALVe team works to no end to get you settled into Seattle and make you feel at home.

my point in all this is that i totally believe this story at face value, this is absolutely something VALVe / Gabe would do. i learned a lot about how a company should be run and how employees should be treated.

ps - Gabe has an entire room, an ENTIRE OFFICE, dedicated to the sole purpose of housing his knife/weaponry collection. i shit you not.

Ten years from now, when we're looking at gaming in retrospective, I still don't think we'll fully be able to grasp the amount of progress Valve Software and Gabe Newell has done for our hobby.

The man's shown himself to be an altruist, cares about his fans (HE READS /ALL/ OF HIS EMAILS, and visited 'Occupy Valve' personally!) and tolerates all the fat jokes. This, and what he did for his employee, just cemented the fact that this man will be regarded as a legend as time goes on.

Not to be a dick or burst anyone's bubble here -- I'm sure Gabe is a good guy (or at least a forward thinker), but everyone has to see that Gabe is also a very intelligent business man. One of the most important things you can find in the software/video game industry is talent. It's obvious Erik Wolpaw has it and was recognized early on by Gabe.

The opportunity cost for letting Erik go was obviously much higher than whatever pay he received while sick. He's made that up hundreds of times over, particularly since he's been involved with Portal, Portal 2, TF2, and Half-Life. What you should be asking is, would Gabe have kept Erik on the payroll if he were a low level customer service rep or accountant?

They offer a week-long vacation to hawaii for all their employees, have TONS of free food, bi-weekly masseuse schedules (How I got in, my good friend's mom Is their masseuse, Contracted, not directly employed) I got to meet the man who worked on Jake and Neytiri's skin animation in Avatar, as well as the lead animator for TransFormers II. wound up seeing, but not meeting the lead animator for all of Avatar, as well as seeing (coming within feet of) Gabe, as well as several other board directors of Valve.

I was diagnosed with Colitis Ulcerosa this summer. Seriously sucked. When I was hospitalised I was dropping 500 grams of weight a day and basically just switched between sleeping and shitting. Got a blood transfusion as well.

Anyway, I was supposed to start in a new job, but then I was hospitalised before I managed to sign anything. My new boss told me to just sign the contract and mail it in. He then went on to fill out hours for me for the full month I was sick, including the time I was hospitalised, with the note that "I would easily catch up for it later". No questions asked, and before I had done any work at all.

All he knew is what he had gotten from the interviews and from a reference.
