I spent two weeks in Finland last July and that sums up Finland pretty well. I swam naked under the midnight sun with half a dozen Finns. The rest were up cooking us pancakes by the river. I chopped wood with an axe for the sauna. We fished and drank beer and smoked cigarettes at 1am, at 4pm, at 8pm. Up there in Northern Finland I began to lose track of time a little bit, where the most important decisions seemed to centre around whether to use the sauna now or later, whether to drink beer or cider, whether to eat reindeer or salmon. Magical.

In Finland, it's traditional for people to take a vacation for a few weeks every year starting at midsummer. They actually shut down the newspapers and other businesses so people can go to their lakeside cabins and hit each other which birch branches in the sauna. Finland is fucking awesome.

Exactly: if you lived in Finland, the former would be a legally required subset of the latter.

[–]The2012Erection 11 points12 points ago

Flight of death is the literal translation, yes. But, given the Dark Lord's modus operandi, flight from death makes more sense.

Consider the phrase, 'un vol de Paris à New York'. It is more correctly translated, 'a flight from Paris to New York' and not 'a flight of Paris to New York.'

Hope that helps.

Did you know Finland borrows more books per citizen than any other country in the world, and they have produced more world rally champions than any other nation per capita I wonder wonder why that is...

EDIT: Top gear taught me most of what I know

[–]HughManatee 163 points164 points ago

Little known fact: Finland has the highest number of Finns per capita than any other country in the entire world.

[–]alkane_alien 85 points86 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't quite know about the first of your wonderments but I believe the latter is due to the test requirements of learner drivers:

In order to safely handle a vehicle in winter weather, drivers must be able to assess road conditions, predict how the vehicle will react in different situations and conditions, and know what actions to take to keep it under control.

Source

[–]mackpack 79 points80 points ago

And they learn all that stuff from the books they borrow, right?

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points ago

How do you think they get to those libraries? They have to drive in shitty road conditions.

[–]feureau 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I dread the day the Finnish discover e-libraries... on second thought, they'd probably would rather rally-drive to the libraries so they could check out ebooks.

Libraries are pretty. I love to hang out in them just to stand around a lot of books.

Every learning driver is taken to a circuit which is either wet ice (if it's winter) or oiled (if it's summer). The lesson usually consists of these basic parts:

  1. A demonstration where a car's braking distance is shown under different conditions, after which the students start driving themselves
  2. Slalom on some sort of oiled metal in different speeds (the metal slate was about 50 meters long in the circuit I visited and we did this in 30, 40 and 50kph iirc)
  3. Hands-on to braking on different surfaces with ABS on and off, as well as with the handbrake
  4. Cornering on the same oiled sheet metal, again with all three braking systems
  5. Before we left our task was basically to try and maintain a steady drift on an oiled semi-circle of the same sheet metal.

And yes, this is mandatory for a license.

[–]MacMonkey 7 points8 points ago

Damned socialists! In America, you have a GOD-GIVEN* right to drive, and the damn government can't take that away from you!

[–]Big_Baby_Jesus 64 points65 points ago*

Being a good, safe, winter conditions drivers doesn't really make you a good rally car driver. Finland produces a lot of pro rally drivers because a ton of Finns participate in rally races. On Top Gear, they talk to Mika Hakkinen about the culture of rally racing in Finland. They have this awesome class system where a race has a set monetary value. You can spend as much on your car as you want, but after the race anyone can buy your car for that predetermined price. That puts a huge premium on driver talent, not financial resources.

EDIT- Grandparent post added that Top Gear clip. If you haven't watched it, do so. It's great. The part I'm talking about starts at 6:00.

And number one in low self esteem.

Every time there is post about Finland, Finns gather to the thread to tell nice things about themselves. Eventually it all ends with Finns discussing about the Winter War and Simo Häyhä. Everyone else has left long time ago.

relevant joke:

"A German, A Frenchman, a Russian, and a Finn took part in a writing competition on elephants. The German came up with "A Short Introduction to the Physiology of the Elephant, 1,500 pages, plus appendices". The French entry was "The Love Life of the Elephant". The Russian wrote "Elephants in Russia", and the Finn wrote "What do Elephants Think of Finland?"

ps. I'm a Finn.

To be fair, Simo Häyhä is pretty exceptional. He killed what, around 700 people over the course of 90 days using small arms? And then survived taking an explosive bullet to the jaw? When you have a guy nicknamed the White Death as one of your national heroes, I don't blame you for showing him off.

Sometimes during your life you have these moments. These moments when you are content. Not just content that you are home, done with work or finished a good meal. You are sitting somewhere, outside maybe, you look at the sun setting or the full moon lighting the darkness and you just feel content. I love those moments. Those are the moments I know I want to keep on going. The moments where you go "This is why I do it all. To support my family, to help the people around me. I feel happy."

I had this last night. I had a particularly bad day at work. Afterwards I went home, put on some nice music, and I just sat there. And I listened. And that's all I did. I was 100% content with life and with what I was doing. It was very peaceful. I love moments like that.

It's the sauna. It tends to get you into the right kind of state of mind. A disproportionately large portion of the moments I've felt really content have to do with this exact moment - sitting outside wearing only a towel, skin glowing with the remaning heat, sweat slowly evaporating, muscles relaxed, a cold beer in hand, listening to the silence and watching either the evening light when the sun is low in the sky, the sunset or the stars (depending on the time of year). It's really quite nice. (It's funny how incredibly accurate the cartoon is - that's the "happy" moment for most Finns I know - the one you look forward to when things get sucky)

The same place your other sock went. It's a dimension of lost combatants and single socks.

And ballpoint pens. There are probably lots of ballpoint pens in that dimension too.

he specifically avoided using scopes because when he had counter-snipers after him, he was only able to spot them by looking for the glare given off by their scopes. they were probably assuming he had a scope as well and were probably looking for that glare.

The soviets actually nicknamed him "the white death" and avoiding sending troop movements through his area just because of him. most of the operations in his area were specifically done to get rid of him.

Ironically, the fight benefited the Soviets in the long term.

It really demonstarted the importance of fighting effectively in winter environments.

Moreover, it served to encourage the Nazis to believe the Soviet Union was weak.

With the Soviets learning from their mistakes, the Germans eventually fell into the trap the Russians themselves had fallen into against Finland.

[–]rcinsf 3 points4 points ago

Im a Canadian who lived in Finland for 5 months. It was quite the culture shock to see how differently nudity is handled. I have to say, I miss the Finnish way of life.

[–]orbat 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As a Finn I've never understood how hysterical some people can be about nudity. Over here it's pretty much normal to see your family and friends nude in the sauna or while swimming in a lake, so it's not really a big deal

[–]Mustkunstn1k 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't go to sauna with pants.

[–]Tommix11 13 points14 points ago

This picture is missing about one hundred thousand mosquitoes.

Anyway, this picture is very correct, the feeling you get from stepping out of a oozing hot sauna with a cold beer in hand, looking at the midnight sun is priceless, you do not want to be anywhere else in the world.

Summer in Finland. If this picture reflected reality, the man would be sitting in a cloud of mosquitoes and dreaming of a world without them.

[–]awertz23 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As happy as that man is, his chest is pretty sad.

[–]Dianiecies 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This picture is simple yet profound because this man is living completely in the present. His past has no relevance and his future has no certainty. This man is contempt with where he is and what he is doing right now, and compared to North Americans who are always dreaming about some goal or success that will come in the future, or endlessly reliving troubles or triumphs of the past, he appears to be quite enlightened.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago
