Old WTF is still WTF ! (imgur.com)

This is fake. The Russians did head dissections of dogs to see if they could keep the heads alive but all but the top two photos are fake.
[–]OrangeSimply 31 points32 points33 points 8 months ago
yep all of the pictures are from the movie Captain America
[–]crazyinthelastdays 11 points12 points13 points 8 months ago
Did they have any success?
[–]Trevor1993 20 points21 points22 points 8 months ago
Sorry for hijacking but this is very related. It was the first ever succesfull head or whatever transplant. It also was done at a hospital very close to where I live. And by the way, this is NOT SAFE FOR ANYTHING.

[–]foozkeeper 4 points5 points6 points 8 months ago
They also grafted severed dog heads onto other dogs, which is pretty weird. The knowledge gained in these experiments helped to make human organ transplants possible.
[–]Antspray 27 points28 points29 points 8 months ago
am i the only one that wasn't creeped out by this and thought it was neat?
[–]UnfortunatelyMacabre 10 points11 points12 points 8 months ago
This doesn't creep me out...but it makes me kind of sad.
[–]euyyn 11 points12 points13 points 8 months ago
That poor thing must have been suffering the whole time :(
[–]hot_snake 4 points5 points6 points 8 months ago
I don't think there would be a lot of pain if the spinal cord were cut. I think the face has a separate nerve for sensory input and motor functions than the rest of the body, but I'm no doctor so what do I know...
So if the area of the cut belonged to spinal cords domain: no pain, otherwise: pain.
[–]euyyn 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
I hope that's so, although even so, his trying to move his limbs and not been able to do it, and not even feeling any sensation back from his body must have made him very anxious and distressed.
[–]ThenThereWasReddit 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Incredibly doubtful. What part of the dog do you think is suffering exactly?
Nonetheless, I agree this wasn't the happiest experiment I've ever seen...
[–]robotempire 5 points6 points7 points 8 months ago
The brain is the thing that suffers pain. Pain/pleasure/itch/heat/whatever nerve impulses are just signals sent from a remote portion of the body to the brain to be processed. Ever heard of "phantom limb syndrome"? An amputee feels pain or itching or some other sensation in a body part that has been amputated.
The brain is the thing.
[–]Moorockin 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
Perhaps, but this was a move in medical science to move into creating life support machines I've heard!
[–]philosomorodon 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
It was extremely sad.
[–]CynAq 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
I think you and others being sad has to do with the music and the weird narration more than the event itself. I had to watch it without sound the first time. It struck me the moment the sound was on.
I think it was his pained eyes and the realization that his head was being kept alive separate from his body. That animation in the beginning didn't help, either, more sad eyes. Who does that in a diagram?
[–]Jaripsi 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
I just went and imagined what if that was my dog and almost instantly tears started flowing. Not to mention that dog kind of looked like my dog.
[–]Kelsomatic 8 points9 points10 points 8 months ago
When they brought out the hammer I thought they were going to hit the dog with it to see if it would respond to pain. I was so glad to see they didn't!
[–]ShootTheHostage 14 points15 points16 points 8 months ago
Yeah, that would have been cruel and immoral.
[–]kilgoretrout123123 5 points6 points7 points 8 months ago

[–]RickyAcid 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
These ones (Wiki Link)
[–]alkalinev 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
Pardon my late reply but the video was posted years ago on reddit and is the murder of a man. I don't know why I looked - morbid curiosity I suppose. Instead of watching it and moving along like many people are able to do, it made me incredibly ill and sad and it is something I can't forget. It was so senseless and sadistic that you are left thinking if it is even real - and sadly it was. I didn't watch the whole video, just glimpses, and I don't recommend you seek it out. As PackBain said, it takes something away from each viewer.
[–]Takingbackmemes 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Dog just had it's damn head cut off, literally. It was already in pain.

He just hits a table with the hammer to spook the dog is all.
[–]thuff 5 points6 points7 points 8 months ago
I've seen this video before, that is indeed all that happens, but there is still a sinking feeling of remorse when I see that animal reacting to stimuli it can't escape from.
[–]wdejr 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
But it's nice to know that the brown dog lives :) I'm sure this was a big break through in the times before defibrillators.

[–]-CraZy- 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago

[–]asian_male_pornstar 63 points64 points65 points 8 months ago
disregarding the morality of this experiment, i thought the results are fascinating and irreplaceably contributive to science.
[–]duykur1 17 points18 points19 points 8 months ago
My first response was disgust, but we can only image the possibilities of this research. Imagine how this could help treating people with trauma? Disconnect the veins going to the head from the body and use artificial blood, while you operate on the rest of the body.
Not that I'm endorsing this program, at all.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 8 months ago
I believe systems like this are in the works. I've heard of a system in trials that is basically an automated cuff that you would secure around a persons neck, it would locate and innervate the carrotid and jugular and circulate a synthetic blood to keep the brain alive.
[–]joeyurso 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Nixon from Futurama?...
Ron Popeil should have this solved in the next decade or so.
[–]prmaster23 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
Let me tell you with my basic college understanding of biology this doesn't sound so crazy after all. We have machines that can replace the lung & heart. What really I am not sure if we could do is to provide nutrients without a digestive system.
Please someone tell me what I am missing? Anything else the brains need?
[–]passing_interest 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
TV.
[–]wtfking 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
Doesn't sound like it would compound the traumatic experience for the patient at all!
[–]Aihwa 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
I'd assume they'd be unconscious. Or at least want to be.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
He meant trauma as in blunt force trauma or physical trauma, not mental trauma as in a traumatic experience. Body crushed? Remove the head, stick it in a jar.
[–]wtfking 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
Having my body crushed would be very mentally traumatic for me :O
[–]CptOblivion 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago

[–]duykur1 1 point2 points3 points 8 months ago
But it might save them. Say the heart was to fail before they could complete surgery?
[–]marvelous_molester 19 points20 points21 points 8 months ago
A lot of things that happened in the soviet union weren't very credible. I won't dismiss this experiment as utter horse shit, but I wouldn't really accept it as irrefutable truth either. Many of soviet "progress" in science and technology were pretty questionable as the soviets did whatever they could to make themselves appear competent and on top of things. On-top of that, the very little technical detail as well as limited angles on the "project" make it even more questionable.
The thing with things like this is that it's very hard to prove it didn't happen because fuck knows what the hell the soviets really were doing, and nobody is really willing to repeat these types of experiments nowadays but I just want to encourage people to be a bit more skeptical when it comes to experiments with very little disclosure from a failed communist state.
[–]dorino0net 23 points24 points25 points 8 months ago*
Just a note: The video was likely a re-staging or recreation of the procedures, but the autojektor used and the procedure legitimately happened and did, in fact, pave the way for modern cardiopulmonary bypass.
The scientist, Sergei Brukhonenko, definitely did it, and the autojektor was a real thing that legitimately worked.
EDIT: Since I should probably have a citation, here's a good one.
[–]luciferprinciple 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
I learned about his experiments in school. He was definitely legit, to the point that my professor emphasized how pioneering his work was even though such experiments could not be reproduced today because of animal rights
[–]kohan69 14 points15 points16 points 8 months ago
. Many of soviet "progress" in science and technology were pretty questionable as the soviets did whatever they could to make themselves appear competent and on top of things.
Hey fuck you, the soviets were launched the first object into orbit of space, and the first animal and the first man and the first woman in space.
Everything you claim about The Soviets is applicable to the propaganda machine of The United States.
[–]marvelous_molester 7 points8 points9 points 8 months ago
I'm not saying that the soviets didn't know what they were doing technologically, I also don't know what the hell the United States has to do with this. I'm from Russia, it's corrupt as hell, people lie and cheat all the time, from what I understand it was more or less the same thing in the Soviet Union. I'm fully aware that the Soviets weren't technologically incompetent, but you should also be aware that they were very often also full of shit.
And I would say that they were much more full of shit than America is today, but again, I have no idea what the hell America's situation has to do with any of this.
[–]kohan69 5 points6 points7 points 8 months ago
I'm saying both parties were doing political stunts to seem more technologically progressed than the other.
[–]mipicko 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
And I would encourage people not to underestimate their dilligence. That "failed communist state" scared 10 shades of shit out of America when Jodrell Bank picked up Sputnik 1 on radar, confirming that the Soviets were the first to have a satellite in orbit of the Earth. And, I think Hitler had a similar nasty surprise with Soviet tanks - the first ever time the Germans encountered a T-34, it left 9 miles of destruction in its wake.
[–]CicisbeoOfCognizance 6 points7 points8 points 8 months ago
There was nothing that bugged me online. No images or videos any Chan site could throw my way. But that one video. I saw it once a few years ago and to this day just haunts me. A combination of horror, pity, and uncanny. Even if it is fake, it had seemed so real when I first saw it.
[–]lychee-twist 2 points3 points4 points 8 months ago
I've seen that video before, and it is well more WTF than these images. It's definitely in my Top 10 WTF moments.

[–]zlozlozlozlozlozlo 8 points9 points10 points 8 months ago
The story behind the robot suit is not interesting: someone from a certain site (leprosorium.ru, don't bother to open it, it's invite-only) draw it to look like an old technical book/photo. Did a good job too. The picture in the top might be real (see link to video in comments).
[–]venereveritas 3 points4 points5 points 8 months ago
That's upsetting.

Sorry for the late reply, i'm gonna say either Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/We3-Grant-Morrison/dp/1401204953 or perhaps some filesharing website if you're feeling cheap, either way it's a pretty good read and the story is a bit sad.
I ended up finding it after a while. Thank you for replying though. Sad indeed.

I am curious as to why they would put a dog's head in a giant body iron body. If they would be able to do so, they dog would still be a dog. I don't see what good would come out of it, they should have just gone for a human head straight away and spared all of the money spent on trying with a dogs head.
Yes, if it works they would have proven that they can sever a head from a body and put it into another body but the way they sever the head and the technology to re-animate a dogs head has to be different from the way one would re-animate a human head and successfully sever a human head without causing neurological damage.
So basically, the USSR were just silly Silly people.

The story behind the robot collie.
Robot collie video.
[–]yujirocks 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
Creepy mainly because my childhood dog was a collie (aka a dog that looks just like the one in these pictures). Though if this were a plan B at the time we had to put her down, i sure as fuck would have approved of it.

Wait wtf, I've sead the video of the living dog head, but a fucking dog cyborg? Somebody explain this shit.
[–]mahgnous 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
There is video of this.
Bioshock?
[–]snoogins1 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
oh wow, this is insane.
[–]boergermeister 0 points1 point2 points 8 months ago
seen that on fallout, they totally copied it
I love how there's people calling it a fake, as if we don't already know. It's funny, that's the point, and that it's in what I presume to be Russian, only makes it funnier.
