Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Your hometown? You are quite lucky to have grown up there. I traveled to Lucerne last year and had a blast. The people were incredibly friendly, the walks far from the tourist center were enjoyable and swimming in the lake was a great way to end the day. Its a really, really great place to be. Lucerne, Montreaux and the countryside outside Gruyeres were beautiful. Scratch that -- the entire country is beautiful.

[–]Granite-M 46 points47 points ago

Humans will deliberately carve anything into a rock wall when they aren't getting paid for the awesome lion sculpture, and they want to stick it to the pricks who are shafting them, but they don't want to ruin the sculpture itself.

You can't just go and change the outline after the fact. If you've seen it in person it's absolutely massive. At least 50 feet across. It was quite obviously planned out this way ahead of time and there would be no way to know he wasn't going to get paid in full ahead of time.

The artist did the outline of the pig as a subtle jab at the French. The Swiss guards who this commemorates died entirely needlessly, they were slaughtered trying to protect the French royal family but they had already secretly fled. Needless to say it caused some tension between the French and the Swiss for the last few hundred years. Therefore, the pig outline is a little bit of an insult to the French.

[–]Matticus_Rex 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seen it in person. Nowhere remotely close to 50 feet across. I'd say it's about 30.

Went to Lucerne a few years back. Most beautiful and clean city I have ever seen.

[–]spitonmars 5 points6 points ago

Mostly right. They didn't die defending the Bastille, it was the Tuileries Palace.

[–]torokunai 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not to be That Guy but the guards died three years after the Bastille, defending the palace housing the French royal family in Paris.

[–]86twerfs 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exaclty - the French mob quite uncompromisingly massacred 760 Swiss guards that were protecting the empty palace in the insurrection du 10 août. Nontheless, the Bastille-protecting Swiss guards of the Salis-Samade Regiment only survived (despite having been granted safe conduct) because they were mistaken for prisoners.

Lucerne is such a beautiful city. It is the home to my first kiss, as well, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. :)

[–]mhfc 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. It's beautiful and striking. The first time I saw it was on an autumn day; the leaves floating in the pond below it made it all the more sad.

As an FYI, right next door to this sculpture is the Gletschergarten, which is a geologic museum displaying these enormous "potholes" with large boulders inside, caused by the swirling, melting waters from glaciers. Some people might find it lame but I thought it was pretty cool.

[–]orthag 2 points3 points ago

Lucerne is so beautiful! I went there as part of a high school trip about ten years ago, and I don't remember everything about the trip (it was part of a tour of a couple of countries, so we didn't have much time in each city) and seeing this posted brought sudden memories back!

Helvetiorum fidei ac virtuti = the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss. The potted version is that the Swiss mercenaries defended King Louis XVI and the Tuileries palace against the French revolutionaries, refusing to follow an order to retreat until after they'd lost six hundred men.

Here's a more detailed shot I took when I visited Lucerne during the summer. Switzerland is such a gorgeous place, everyone should go there at least once.

Amazing Lion? Unfortunately not, if you look really closely you can just make out that it's made of stone. Dissapointing I know.

I went here a few years ago and had this as my desktop background for a long time, it looks like there are two windows (one far left pictured, one far right not pictured) in the rock. Anyone know what those are?

I'm probably the only one, but I was more intrigued by the lines and natural cracks of the cliff and saw the lion as an eye sore.

"The commerce of Lucerne consists mainly in gimcrackery of the souvenir sort; the shops are packed with Alpine crystals, photographs of scenery, and wooden and ivory carvings. I will not conceal the fact that miniature figures of the Lion of Lucerne are to be had in them. Millions of them. But they are libels upon him, every one of them. There is a subtle something about the majestic pathos of the original which the copyist cannot get. Even the sun fails to get it; both the photographer and the carver give you a dying lion, and that is all. The shape is right, the attitude is right, the proportions are right, but that indescribable something which makes the Lion of Lucerne the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world, is wanting.

The Lion lies in his lair in the perpendicular face of a low cliff—for he is carved from the living rock of the cliff. His size is colossal, his attitude is noble. His head is bowed, the broken spear is sticking in his shoulder, his protecting paw rests upon the lilies of France. Vines hang down the cliff and wave in the wind, and a clear stream trickles from above and empties into a pond at the base, and in the smooth surface of the pond the lion is mirrored, among the water-lilies.

Around about are green trees and grass. The place is a sheltered, reposeful woodland nook, remote from noise and stir and confusion—and all this is fitting, for lions do die in such places, and not on granite pedestals in public squares fenced with fancy iron railings. The Lion of Lucerne would be impressive anywhere, but nowhere so impressive as where he is."

-Samuel Langhorne Clemens

I remember visiting this site as a little kid. I grew up about 2 hours away from this location in the Kanton of Aargau, located in northern Switzerland. I moved away from CH when I was 11, to the USA. Now I am serving in the US Navy as a Corpsman stationed in Japan. I miss my home and can't wait to go back : )
