How would we know if the preachers are telling the truth? We can't just take their word that God spoke to them and call it the bible.... ooohhhh.

The president of the Mormon church does.

Revelations 22:18 " I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book." Christians take this literally.

Hey. God spoke to me last night and said he was really baked when he wrote that part. He's given me, and me alone, the right to change the bible. So enjoy the new and improved, Biblically enforced, "Bear Suit Fridays."

Btw if you don't wear a Bear Suit on Friday, as it is so plainly written in the new Bible, your whole family gets slaughtered.

A story from the book of Bachmann: And the lord said unto me, Michelle, you are, like, the best person for the job. You should, like, totally run for president. And Michele thought about it, and it was good. Amen

Lots of smaller cult-like groups do exactly that.

This was actually an issue in the very early church. People would have visions from God, which would be regarded as sacred truth. Then people started having just crazy visions (like, even crazier than what they already had), and everyone realized that they couldn't let just anybody add whatever they wanted.

I'm sure some do, but probably because keeping the bible as a book written along time ago allows people to present it as some sort of ancient wisdom with complex metaphors that need skill to be interpreted. This allows all the different branches of Christianity to accuse each other of being wrong and to only follow the guidelines of the bible they like (eg. persecuting homosexuals) and forgetting the ones they don't (eg. mixing different fibers)

Because what is being 'said' is already in the book....
