I treat the 'God' part of everyday sayings as simply part of the background.

I don't stop saying 'No Way Jose' just because the person I'm speaking to isn't named Jose. Think also of 'Adam's Apple', 'Doubting Thomas', 'Molly coddle', 'John Doe', 'Jeckyll and Hyde', 'Midas Touch' and so on.

I think the best thing an athiest can do, is instead of trying to avoid using biblical sayings, to simply treat them as if you were quoting a movie or a book. By specifically avoiding them, you are actually validating them. You can still say TGIF, same as you can turn to your friend and say "Hello Clarice" or grab a toy and hiss " My precious!"

Since Friday has always (in my experience) and continues to happen each and every seven days, I find it a waste of effort to thank anyone. My knowledge of the workings of our solar system give me fair reason to theorize that Friday will arrive on time for the remainder of my days.

Friday has traditionally been the day of a love deity, and Friday literally means Day of Frigg, the Old Germanic(Norse) goddess of love.

So if I were to thank anyone, it would be a goddess of love (Aphrodite, Venus, Freya, or Frigg).

Or because the Germanic word is the actual root of Friday, maybe I should say:

Thank Germania it's Friday

That way the acronym doesn't need to change.

Yes we do have someone to thank for fridays. Trade Unions, it was they who fought for more rights for workers, better conditions, shorter hours and paid holidays etc. Thank TU's for friday. :)
