Fake or not, that is EXACTLY what my own mother believes.

Ditto this.

Common, folks. Skepticism is not something to be restricted to religion and its claims. Freaking out over these kinds of things is no different than the religious facebook posts about the "war on christmas" that go viral.

Since when did stuff need to be "true story" to upvote?

Since when did stuff need to be "true story" to upvote?

When it is either assumed to be a true story or implied to be one when it is, in fact, the opposite.

If the message had been, "Hey everybody! Look at this fake letter to the editor!" then it would have been boring, but at least have been honest. Instead, the idea is to generate outrage and excitement by implying it was real. "Those stupid theists!"

There are enough real and substantive instances of persecution atheists face, we don't need fake ones. If there aren't any real and substantive instances of persecution, then we don't need to manufacture them just to play the victim. That is, after all, why we point out the absurdity of the "war on christmas" concept.

It seems to be another example of Poe's Law in action, too. Someone who actually believes what the letter says just goes ahead and STEALS (isn't there a commandment against stealing?) the letter and submits it under his or her own name as legitimate instead of satire or just a spoof. And it's accepted as legitimate because it plausibly matches one's worldview.

Read the last paragraph in the link. There were alot of people who agreed with the conclusion despite it being a gag.

On the weekends, I like to go to the mall and talk people into stealing things.

We also have freedom of speech... Does that mean we can say what we want, but MUST speak? Should all mutes be kicked out of the country as well?

It's so funny to see someone regurgitate right wing fundamentalist talking points, but clearly without having the mental capacity to have remembered half of them.

Whether the letter is real or not, I have heard people argue the "In God we Trust" money issue. It shouldn't be on the money and the motto of the United States is not "In God we Trust."

I read this as serious, not because I don't think it's ridiculous, but because there is far more insane religious banter than this. It's hard to tell what's satire and what's not these days.

I realize this if fake but this really is a problem in this country. Too many misinformed Americans, too much intolerance, and politicians getting away with the absolute corruption of the education system in this country. Our kids are being taught to hate atheists and anyone else that thinks differently. Our politicians have bought out our educators and replaced preparatory education with nationalistic ideology, teaching our kids bogus history and American exceptionalism. Until we get the right people in office, at every level, we are going to see more and more hatred of atheists, hatred of science, and hatred of truth. Didn't mean to take this in the direction of politics but I think they go hand in hand.

fake or not people believe it. despite the fact we are less than .25% of the total prison population and the US prison population is larger than the rest of the worlds combined. im betting most of the atheists in prison are there for victimless crimes, like possessing pot.

Does the same newspaper allow for racist reader comments? Like "Blacks, Hispanics, Asians ect, get out of America?" Cause that's what this is, it's persecution, it's hate speech.
