I don't think you did all your research.

IE you gonna file US taxes still.

In 2006, they added a clause at the last minute raising taxes for those who work abroad. I think America is the only country to tax it's citizens while working abroad. It doesn't make sense to have to pay these taxes when you are not using the services like roads, and other things. You may be exempt from the taxes on your first $90,000 of income while living overseas though.

Just never come back to the U.S. and there's not even a snowball's chance in hell of them spending all that money to come to arrest you for not paying taxes.

If you make enough money and it causes the IRS to raise an eyebrow in your general direction, there are individuals (in any given European government) who for the right price, will help your money safely "disappear" from the eyes of the IRS. European government officials are corrupt as fuck. You just need to be rich enough to take advantage of their help (multi-millionaire status....of which I'm not.....yet). Then, enjoy a high quality of life as you travel to and fro as you please in Europe. I can only imagine how great of a fucking lifestyle that must be......

Again, unless you got some big fucking connections.....don't ever plan on returning to the U.S.

For a single person making 60k a year, you'll pay about $19500 in income and payroll taxes in Finland.

In California it would be about 20050.

Sure there are more deductions available in the US, a married person with a mortgage would pay a lot less, but the point is for your average middle class person, income taxes in the US aren't that much less than so called "high tax" European nations.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

average middle class person

I'm a tad "above average" as far as income is concerned. This is why finding a suitable home country is important to me. I'm not in the business of working my ass off....only to have those monies stolen from me in the form of income taxes, then used to persecute me (Average John Q. Citizen with no political connections) with unjust laws that violate the Constitution of the United States of America.

TSA

SOPA

"Patriot" Act

Infinite Dention

Just a few of the bullshit laws they are using to try to turn the U.S. into a police state. I want no part of it. I firmly believe that this is a sign of things to come.....and in 20 years, the U.S. will be just like Nazi Germany with regards to our leaders.

I'm also not about bailing out banks and giving money to Israel.

Let someone else believe the lies and propaganda. I'm firmly convinced they're all full of shit and every time they open their mouths, nothing but lies come out.

Just waiting for the right opportunity to leave and never come back.

You still have to file. Birth right citizenship, etc.

The main target is the stupid rich that will get rich and then go live off a boat and denounce citizenship while still docked up in different ports.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You need to live there for 12 years first, so for at least 12 years, he has to pay BOTH sets of taxes. (There are ways around this - international tax credits where you pay the lower rate and then subtract what you already paid from the higher - having your paychecks sent to a US bank and then transferring money, etc)

[–]GhostedAccount 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The easiest way is to simply not file taxes while overseas working foreign job. The US government has no way of knowing about the income you are earning.

As a normal middle class person, you won't make enough money for the US government to want to try to catch you.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the issue with this is, should you ever choose to come back to the states, even to visit, you risk the possibility of jail time or severe fines. and the rich arent the only ones the IRS can cause problems for... the best way is the legal way - don't pay the swiss taxes - either claim foreign tax credits from US taxes, or set up a bank account in the US, and have all your swiss income paid there, then transfer the money. Or both.

[–]GhostedAccount 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nah, if you work in sweden, the US has no way of knowing about your income.

I wouldn't worry about them finding out, they cannot.

[–]aspeenat 2 points3 points ago

My husband's cousin is in Sweden and doesn't pay US taxes. He visits the US once a year and has had no problem.

[–]JohnnyGz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In Sweden how much tax you pay is public knowledge. So that wouldn't quite work. One of the few places where taxes are actually published.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it is possible to be audited/get in trouble if you ever come back to visit the states tho. Lets say you come in for thanksgiving one year. You use your US passport to avoid raising any suspicion and get through customs faster. Your US passport IS GOING to have a swiss visa in it. The agent sees that, and has to check you in as an expat. He will also ask you why you have a work visa (what you're going to need your first few months there). You're going to have to tell him you work in Switzerland. This is all filed away somewhere in immigration. Now, you've been in Switzerland for a year, and likely haven't had a residence in the states for a while. But you still have a social security number and a US passport, and US citizenship. You still owe taxes. It is possible the IRS will come looking for you, bump into your travel/immigration information, and arrest/fine you the next time you try and cross the US border.

[–]ryy0 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Educate a nonamerican how this works, please. Is the 12 years are required to gain Swiss citizenship, or to give up US citizenship?

The post makes it as if OP would have no more care for US politics, so I was guessing that a change in citizenship is likely.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

12 years is to become a swiss citizen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_nationality_law And not having care for US politics doesn't necessarily mean a change in citizenship. I'm an expat living abroad, and I view the 2012 elections the exact same way OP does. But I don't ever plan on giving up my US citizenship

[–]thebrokendoctor 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not just the 12 years, you still have to be one lucky bastard to get it. We guard our citizenship like it's the ark of the covenant.

[–]aspeenat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I heard if only one of your parents is a Swiss citizen and you are born outside of Switzerland, citizenship is not given. True?

[–]thebrokendoctor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

False. My mother is Swiss (with Canadian citizenship as well) and father Canadian. I was born in Germany on a Canadian Forces base and I was granted citizenship at birth (for both nations). Anyone that has a Swiss parent is granted citizenship at birth, and then sent a letter at 18 to confirm that they wish to keep their citizenship.

[–]aspeenat 0 points1 point ago

Meh... This article was a bit boring and untrue. I'm an American who has lived abroad for the last three years. I lived in rural Thailand for a year, teaching at a university. Since then I've been in the UK for two years teaching and studying.

Here's the bottom line. If you are a normal person, NO ONE GIVES A SHIT. You'll make friends, you'll learn the language (if you need to), you'll be fine.

Also, I haven't paid US taxes since I left. Fuck 'em.

[–]Kalivha 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From experience, for the most part Americans have a fairly decent reputation and are much more likely to get hired than other nationalities.

The last part is true to some extent. You might get stuck as the only foreigner in the village (this can be far worse than sticking to other expats of your nationality) or you might end up hanging out with completely random other expats and that's just really awesome!

What I'm meaning to say is, it's not impossible, and it can turn out brilliant!

I've seen people have trouble to adapt to a different culture, I've never lived outside Western Europe/North America, so I wouldn't really know.

The thing about encountering the same or similar issues in a new country is that it's somehow less personal, I think. Of course, politics and weird customs affect me wherever I am, but at least I won't have to deal with the fact that I'm supposed to be part of the nation that is at fault, at least not fully. It's convenient.

[–]fiat_lux_ -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The article is pretty exaggerated though. Some of the observations are pure BS, e.g.:

For instance, many Asian cultures respond to uncomfortable or shocking situations by laughing. Try to keep that in mind when telling your new co-workers that your grandmother has inoperable cancer.

Some people might laugh nervously in uncomfortable or shocking situations, but it's no different from how some Westerners laugh nervously. Way to dial it up to 11 and blow it way out of proportion by bringing cancer in to it. One of my [Asian] grandparents died to inoperable cancer, and no one laughed. If they did, it wouldn't be a "cultural" thing. That person would just be an asshole. Plain and simple.

There are such things in the world as "cosmopolitan cities", where cultural differences do exist, but there is also a sort of international standard for base ethics/morality and etiquette that most people understand.

[–]fiat_lux_ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. I know it's mostly tongue in cheek, and it was humorous. I'm not exactly outraged, just pointing out that the kind of Americans that want to travel or move out wouldn't have that hard of a time getting used to living outside the states. I don't think the OP or others should be discouraged by this stuff, because a lot of it is bunk. Relatively speaking, we're not uncultured and sheltered as the stereotypes against us would suggest, after all.

Your comment seems to be the first one that brought the source into question.

That article is just a big fucking facepalm, not a single statement is true or hold any grounds at all.

Quote example: "This will come up every single day. Is that policeman asking for a bribe, or trying to hit on you? That old woman openly called you fat -- does that mean she hates you? What about the other four people who called you fat that day? Is it normal in this city for another man to touch you like that? You're not going to know, and no one is going to tell you."

"No one around you can explain what you're looking at, or give you directions. If you ask them, they're likely to laugh nervously and then run away. Plead with someone that you're desperate and need help, and they'll laugh again." ....................................................................................

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, however.....money talks and the U.S. dollar is still strong and given the right preparations, the right amount of connections and enough money, you can skip those 6 "cautionary tales" and basically raise your middle finger towards the tyrants in the U.S. government. Then sit back in your palatial castle (with your two hot blond European babes who can't get enough of your boorish American accent) and laugh your ass off as the current and future leaders of the U.S. ruin the country and trample over the U.S. Constitution even more.

If I'm in the mood for a comedy, there's no need to download a movie......just turn on CNN or FoxNews for my daily dose of laughs.

As long as you're not a felon/criminal/terrorist, and as long as the only reason you're leaving the U.S. is for conscientious objector status (you object to the tyrants and traitors in our government and how much they have ruined America over the past 20-30 years), the chances of the IRS or anyone else for that matter spending all that money to extradite you back is slim to none. I'm sure the actual "law" may be different, but since the laws don't apply to the tyrants in power, they sure as fuck don't apply to me, especially since my fucking hard earned tax dollars are being used by the tyrants in power to persecute me (average John Citizen). I'm willing to take a bet that they won't come after you based on the above conditions.

I would go as far as taking a picture of me throwing up both middle fingers (and get my two blond babes to show their tits as I'm standing in front of the new SL63 that I was able to outright purchase from not having to pay income taxes) and then mailing it to the IRS with the words go fuck your whore fucking mothers, bitches! written on it.

Aufedersein dummkopf! Enjoy the police state! Enjoy big brother watching over you! Enjoy your Constitutional Rights being flushed right down the fucking toilet by the tyrants in office! Enjoy paying taxes in an economy that the government had a huge hand in fucking up (and then refusing to prosecute their corporate American masters for their crimes).

The ONLY problem you will have (if you have enough money) in a foreign country (like anywhere in Europe) is the fact that gasoline costs something like $15/gallon. But if you got enough money to outright walk away from this shit hole and never come back, then I suppose you got enough money to spend $15/gallon on gas.

Well if you are anything like the gif you just linked i hope the plane is powerful enough to carry your solid titanium testicles.

[–]dmwebber 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Titanium has a density of 4.506 g/cm3 so two 18 cm3 testis would only weigh in at 162.2 g or 5.722 oz… roughly the mass of a sparrow with a machine gun.

I think you are mis-under-estimating how large these mens testicles are, you seen the south park medical week episode? think 2x that.

As an American living overseas, I can tell you that you will find election times far less aggravating once you get out.

So you think what happens in America won't have any affect to you even if you are out of country. Just read SOPA.

whatever the outcome, you'll have to answer for america's politics. people in other countries tend to follow us closer than we do, and they'll ask questions and want to know why we do the crazy shit that we do. it's easier to ignore in the states than over seas. be prepared.

I feel the same way! We're moving to Canada this summer. I feel this way about a lot of things in the country, though; not just the elections.

I am confused why so many people are hating on people who want to emmigrate from the U.S.? If they don't like it here then isn't it good they're leaving? Even so, the U.S. has sort of been on the decline and to be completely honest it may be the fiscally responsible thing to do...

as a person capable of rational thought I recognize that it doesn't make any fucking difference who wins anymore and it hasn't made a difference in decades

Generally, all the people that make America suck are related to the ones who threaten to leave over presidential elections.
