Ad budget:

Binder clips = $.50 and instant

or

Professional tailoring = $100 + time

The biggest cost of professional tailoring for a photo shoot is that they can't reuse / sell the suit.

Once, I was a model for a Neiman Marcus catalog and I was shocked to find out that this was the trick behind all of the photographs. It was completely random -- I ran into a guy that I'd seen around my apartment complex a few times. One day I was walking my dog and he approached me and asked me if I wanted to do some modelling. He showed me his photos (which he had on his iPod) and said that they would pay be $1000. Um...ok...maybe I get raped, maybe I get paid, maybe a little of both -- let's see how it goes.

So I show up for my shoot and there was a single rack of clothes that sort-of fit me and they would tell me what to put on. Then the photographer would position me how she wanted me and once she gave the signal, a swarm of assistants would descend and start clipping the holy hell out of my clothing to get that tailored look. The photographer would take a couple of test snaps to look for any odd wrinkles or whatnot, then repeat the process or take the actual photo. The best part of the shoot was a scene where I was wearing a scarf and they wanted the appearance of it blowing in the wind so they brought in a boom and secured the scarf with wire to have the appearance of motion. Easiest grand I ever made. Oh yea, and when I saw the catalog, they had cropped my face out of all the pictures.

Well, not ALL of my face -- just nose up (and my bald head). Enough of it to go, "ok, I am not a pretty model man, I get it" :(

I never kept the catalog, but my wife made a couple of scans a long time ago:

[–]IggySorcha 63 points64 points ago*

I did that a long time ago, and it's worked wonders. I went from being that awkward girl that fits no clothing & literally got stuff thrown at her in school to being the girl that's constantly getting compliments on her outfits even from preppy coworkers that usually don't give people like me the time of day. The best part is my clothes usually last me for 5 years (or a decade in the case of some clothes) minimum, and most cost less than $10 because I'm able to just buy something from Goodwill or off the clearance rack at Kohls for the wrong size, then mess with it at home. I still buy nice clothes from time to time that I don't have to screw with, but it's nice having the option.

If you're truly interested and have a ton of T shirts laying around, get Generation T. The book not only has starter tips for sewing, but has tons of DIY projects, including no-sew ones that might help you ease into the process.

Edit: I accidentally a word.

Can you recommend something for males? I've been wanting to learn how to sew my own clothes as a male and I don't even know where to start.

[–]let_there_be_pie 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you're serious about wanting to learn how to sew by machine then take a class. Machine dealerships will have them and so will some craft stores. You can definitely learn from magazines, blogs, the internet-in-general, but it's nice having someone there to talk you through how to use your machine. The class I took taught us all the basic stitches, seam allowances, what foot to use and why, and stuff about your fabric (how to cut and what to use) etc. After learning the basics everything else (books, mags, blogs) become a lot easier to understand.

And the basics are really basics, if you want to make stuff for yourself you'll be browsing the books, mags, and blogs anyway since everything you make will be to your measurements.

They do have males in the class wanting to learn and beginners classes tend to be unisex, my class had an apron the first session and pajamas for the next. And don't be afraid to get any of the beginners sewing books that look like they're supposed to be for females. Most of the patterns aren't clothes so you can tweak them to what you like anyway, and since you're starting out with things like pillowcases, pillows, curtains, and bags (even guy friendly ones) you can get yourself familiar with your stitches and feet and not have to worry about fit.

Once you start making clothes you can make one of these since actual body forms can be pricey.

[–]decant 6 points7 points ago

I learned a lot by subscribing to Threads for a couple of years. Probably more than half of the articles are about female clothes, though. A lot of it was about how to alter patterns and clothes.

It's because the suit is not adjusted. Instead of doing that, they just put clippers behind so it takes less time and they can resell the suit or whatever without alterations.

My wife has been learning it. She's already got a jacket and a pair of pants that fit her like a glove (downside: since they're not made of rubber, she can't afford to gain/lose weight and still wear those).

I thought about all the times I’ve stood in a fitting room and stared up at the lights and bit my lip so hard it bled, just to keep myself from crying about how nothing fits the way it’s supposed to

Wow... that's... unusual ? I hope.

[–]atla 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not at all. I have two words: hips and shoulders. My shoulders are too wide for my body, so I have to buy shirts at least one size up so that I can move in them. And don't even get me started on long sleeved shirts that actually go down to the wrists.

On top of that, I apparently have pretty wide hips. I can't wear anything that doesn't rest above them, or the pants will fall off. But if I buy jeans that actually accommodate them, I can generally fit 3-5 fingers between my belly button and my pants button. And if you mix thighs and khakis? It's a nightmare. Trying on anything with straightish legs when you have thighs and hips makes you feel like you're literally bursting out of the fabric because of how fat you are.

I end up feeling like a man-shouldered gorilla with thunder-thighs.

Seriously. (One of) the worst feeling in the world is when you go to a store and realize your pants size has moved up. It doesn't matter that it's probably from brand differences. It doesn't matter that you're happy with your body. It feels like you lost the war. It doesn't help that pants tend to go up by 2s, so going up from a 10 doesn't mean you get 11 -- you get a 12, so screw you, you had to bump up TWO levels 'cuz of how fat you got.

And it's just confusing, because you see people on TV or in movies -- like Queen Latifah, who is no skinny chicken -- who look absolutely wonderful in their clothes, and you just don't understand how, or why. It's like there has got to be something wrong with you, because even people who have 20-50 pounds on you look better.

Tl;dr: On behalf of women everywhere, fuck clothing.

[–]bobfromsales 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you hear people say the media gives women unfair standards of beauty and its hurting them what do you think that means?

It's real, it causes serious emotional distress. Most women can probably relate to the feelings this author is describing here.

[–]julia-sets 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope, I don't think it is. Or there are just two weird girls here. I freaked out about how "weird" and "disproportionate" my body is when I was 14 and a size 2 and I do it now that I'm 23 and a size 8 (note: sizes mean jack-all, since they're different based on brand/article of clothing/day of the week/direction the wind blows).

It doesn't help that anything not rail-thin is basically designed AGAINST. My biggest problem is a fairly decent sized bust. Great, right? Everyone wants big boobs! But everything is designed for models with far less boob-age, and so a good 2/3rds of the shirts out there are literally unwearable.

[–]mishiesings 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its not just women. I'm a heterosexual, non metrosexual puerto rican man and ive had panic attacks picking out jeans cuz my butt is huge. If you think women's clothing is unforgiving, in order to accommodate my ass I have to go like 4 sizes up, to where everythings really baggy on me. I wear extra slim jeans so it kind of defeats the purpose.

[–]soloreddit 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Similar if you're tall & skinny like me. Pants will either fit your waist or your legs, never both. Shirts will either be the right length or fit your shoulder width correctly, never both.

[–]KaosTwinkie 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Know your pain on that one. Big boobs and smaller waist= hard to find shirts. You either buy to fit the boobs and the lower part looks bad because it hangs with no shape, or buy to fit the waist and the top is uncomfortable/somewhat slutty looking because of too much cleavage.

[–]bunbunbunbun 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

21 year old lady here- My problem is that shirts are just not CURVY enough. And I don't mean big, either. I fit a medium on my bust and hips, but a small on my waist. I ALWAYS have baggy fabric under my boobs and on my back where my waist is. It drives me bonkers. So then when I try to go a size down, I can't fit my arms through the holes. MADNESS I TELL YOU.

[–]Dynha42 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not uncommon at all. I love myself, and I have a wonderful husband that loves me the way I am. But oh my god I've done this many times. Spend hours/days trying on clothes, hoping to find just a handful of items that work. And when you don't, it's hard not to tear up.

[–]TriadDude 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Probably too far buried to get noticed, but in the link it says people are getting t-shirts altered. Are they really doing that? I only ask because off the rack t-shirts do not fit me well, yet when I've called local tailors they say they don't do that kind of work.

[–]Shaysdays 88 points89 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They probably are, I've refitted tees for myself ('girly' tees ride up unless I give them a nipped-in waist) and it's not hard at all as long as you're just working along the sides. Tailors probably won't do it because it's too easy, believe it or not, it's like asking a mechanic to move your mirrors for you. They'd be spending all their time measuring you for what's about 2 minutes (for them) worth of sewing- not worth their time.

Someone recommended Generation T upthread, that's a good one with some redos and recycling, but not so much on how to refit things. This is how I taught some very manly Marines how to take in baggy uniform shirts, so if they can do it, you can. This takes me like, two minutes to explain if you're in front of me, but since I can't be there to show you, I'm gonna lay it all out. GET READY, CAUSE HERE WE GO.

I would recommend getting some cheap (throw-away quality, we're going to mark them up) t-shirts and binder clips. I'm assuming no side seams because it's cheap! (if it has them, just use them instead of this next step) Before you put it on, lay it flat, take a magic marker and run it up the sides to mark the 'seams.' That way you're not twisting the shirt when you start the next step.

Put the t-shirt on inside out. Make sure the seams are straight along your sides. This is important! if you neglect the sides, your seams will look all wonky because things won't match up.

This is where you're probably going to need some help. Take the binder clips, and working one at a time on each side, nip in the shirt along your waist from under your armpits to the very bottom edge. Try to get the binder clips as close to touching as you can- we're looking for a line to trace. Also, make sure the seam is in the MIDDLE when you pinch and clip-if you have to kinda fold it and roll it, that's okay, but keep the middle where it's still centralized. Don't go for 'skintight,' go for 'closely fitted.'

Take a magic marker and trace from top to bottom on the front, where the ends of the clips are. Try to trace them in the back, too, or if a friend is helping you, have them do it.

One you've got your shirts all marked up, take off the binder clips, and lay them flat again. the front line and the back line should match up, but if they don't fit exactly, it's okay to fudge it a little so they do.

Draw another line INSIDE THE SHAPE, about a half inch smaller. This is for what's called the seam allowance, it gives you the fabric that will be between the sewing line and the end of the material.

Cut the two SMALLER shapes out of the sides. They'll be diamondy or whatever depending on your bod and the shape, but most importantly, they should be symmetrical. There should not be any lumps and bumps, there should be gentle curves or straight lines going into gentle curves.

Leave the shirt inside out. Using a sewing machine or really straight hand stitches, sew the front to the back on the markered lines. Try it back on. If you need to rip out a seam or take it in a little here and there, go for it- just remember to keep your seams as flowing as possible.

Once you've got your t-shirt 'pattern,' you can probably keep the parts you cut off the sides to use as a template for other t-shirts. Just trace it on the side (using chalk), cut out the shape, remember how much space you left as a seam allowance, then sew it back up.

Some tips- got from directly at the armpit seam to all the way at the bottom, or else you'll have an odd 'corner' when you're done.

If you need 'a boob sock,' (where there would be like, an actual 'shelf' in the material for it to fight right) a) Va va voom, and b) This won't work for something like that- you'd need to use darts, and that's advanced.

If you do this right, you might not even have to throw away the shirt- I taught some Brownies how to make a similar project (A dress for their dolls out of an old shirt) and about half of them couldn't see the marker lines when they were done.

You can pick up a good basic electric sewing machine (I like Brother) for about $100. Also ask any relatives if they have one you can borrow first to try it out. (My first sewing machine was my mom's old one she hadn't thrown out just in case.)

Good luck!

Because it's not a tailored suit. It's a suit made for a body type similar to his, and clipped to taste.

Want to pull off a suit nice? Go to the gym, get in shape. Go to a tailor, get measured. Go to the store, pick a style, and get the tailor to make you rock it.

Edit: Changed ripped for 'in shape', because 'ripped' apparently means 'more muscle than common sense'.

[–]l80 80 points81 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Getting clothing tailored is not expensive. Buying ridiculously expensive clothing and expecting it to fit as if it were tailored is expensive.

Buy a decent suit. Get it tailored. Now your affordable suit fits beautifully and looks like a lot more than you bought it for.

[–]ericanderton 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't get me wrong. I do this. Bought a new suit last week as a matter of fact, and had it tailored to fit. Looks great.

But my glib remark belies the truth in this situation: once you gain some weight, or lose weight, you're due for another trip to the tailor's. I'm not saying "don't ever do this", but rather "buyer beware". After all, keeping a good wardrobe requires commitment.

[–]l80 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh, absolutely. But if you're someone who yoyos in weight, it's actually probably better to get stuff tailored (either learn how to take in and let out clothes yourself, or find a good tailor) than having to buy a whole new wardrobe every single time.

Yo dawg, I heard you like to pursue suits about suits in suits.

[–]jakewi 120 points121 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This exactly. I'm on set for photoshoots everyday and most of the clothes sent are just general sizes. They've got to be clipped to show how they should fit. This is especially true for suits, a website I work for sells a lot of very high end suits and the suits you see on the model are sent right back to the warehouse to be sold. They aren't going to tailor a several thousand dollar suit for one shot and pretty much throw all the money away.

[–]Nerosquito 183 points184 points ago

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the biggest issue I have is not with suits, but when that's done with non tailorable or generally untailored items. T shirts, wool sweaters, a lot of things you aren't going to tailor but the fit when you get it is atrocious and baggy. Generally that's not an issue unless I order online. But it grinds my gears to try on a sweater in a store and wonder why it fit so nicely on a mannequin only to see three clips hidden from view.

[–]arcturu5 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the fit when you get it is atrocious

Don't buy it if it doesn't fit.

Different stores sell fits that work for different people. Go to a bunch of stores, try on their stuff. Find what works for you and buy one. Take it home and wear it for a couple of weeks to see how it breaks in.

Once you find that magic store that sells the shirt/sweater/whatever in your fit that wears well and is in your budget buy a bunch.

[–]Elided_Ego 9 points10 points ago

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points ago

Not even this. Just don't be fat and go to a tailor. The past year I just wear a nice tailor suit jacket pretty much every where I go and it is absolutely amazing how much better random strangers and service folk treat me.

[–]Hara-Kiri 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do tailored suits really make that much more of a difference than a non-tailored but well fitting suit?

[–]awfulgrace 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Completely.

Switched to custom suits last year (moved to a city where they're reasonably priced) and I will NEVER go back.

I have a standard body shape that required very minimal adjustment to off-the-rack US suits, but a completely custom suit will blow the doors off ANY rack suit.

It's funny, when I wore my first custom back to the US, everyone commented on how I lost weight. I had gained 10lbs since they last saw me...

[–]Hara-Kiri 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it expensive to get done? And can they do it with suits you already have or do they make them specially?

[–]awfulgrace 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can get an existing suit 'tailored' but it's limited to just relatively minor adjustments (sleeve length, pant length, waist). Obviously going smaller is easier than bigger.

Full custom will be completely tailored to your body.

Cost (and value) is completely dependent on where you are. I could never afford a full custom in NY, but now I live in HK and it's within my budget. I go to a pretty respectable guy and get shirts for ~US$60 and nice wool suits for ~US$650. There are cheaper in HK, but this is the best value for me (cost-vs-quality). There are custom tailors that travel to western cities from HK/Bangkok, which also could be an option for you.

[–]naengmyeon 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not terribly expensive. Find a local hole in the wall tailor shop that has a good reputation. In LA I know of an Eastern European lady named Clava that does tailoring out of her drycleaning store. Fixed my suit up proper for under $50.

[–]cpuetz 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are websites that will keep your measurements on file and mail you very reasonably priced custom suits. I haven't needed a new suit since finding them, but love the shirts I've gotten from this place.

Correction. Get to a good tailor.

Dear lord did I go to a bad tailor as a teenager for my sister's wedding. Look, buddy, it's not the eighties. Shoulder pads are not, I repeat NOT in style. And I don't think they've ever been in style on men. My mother still insists it's an amazing suit. I say it makes me look like a butch lesbian. AND THAT'S EVEN WITH MY BEARD.

[–]POOPYFACEface 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Sloppy1sts 12 points13 points ago

Ripped means a moderate to high (but still not ridiculous) amount of muscle and low body fat.

Jacked is the word whoever corrected you was looking for.

[–]gloomdoom 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're a fool if you think being ripped is part of having clothes that fit.

Doesn't matter what your size is, develop a relationship with a good tailor and invest a little bit of money to make your clothes look 50 times better.

Why in the fuck do you think the fashion industry uses stickmen in runway shows? Because clothing looks best when it falls. Not when it's bulging at the biceps.

[–]wing-attack-plan-r 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

being in shape actually makes it way harder to find clothes that fit well off the rack. In the US i think clothes are made for people with a 4 to 6 inch drop (difference between waist and chest measurement), and having a 9 to 10 inch drop, i can never find shirts or jackets that fit right.

the up side is after something is tailored correctly, it looks great.

also i dont think he was saying that you have to be ripped to have clothes that fit, just alluding to the fact that in-shape people with well fitting clothes look better than out-of-shape people in well fitting clothes.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. I have an eight inch drop generally so literally any suit that fits my shoulders off the rack fits like a bag since I have a 32 inch waist. My actual fit is a 38 long with shoulder somewhere around 42.

[–]BGraceful 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's a difference between being ripped (I prefer fit) and having bad proportions.

[–]Tordek 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I exaggerated a bit with "ripped", but get fit.

Not model-fit where you're a stick. Not retarded, Mr Olympia shit, where your shoulders get stuck on double doors. More importantly, not fat.

But you're a fool if you say "your size doesn't matter".

[–]dakru 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not retarded, Mr Olympia shit, where your shoulders get stuck on double doors. More importantly, not fat.

They miss the point that it's hard to accidentally get that big. "Ooops, I accidentally became Ronnie Coleman."

[–]zzzaz 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A correctly fitted suit/shirt/etc. won't bulge at the biceps, whether you are skinny or fat or ripped.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

however people who are in extremely good shape tend to have a huge drop between chest and waist sizes and this looks a little worse then a guy who has a smaller drop, anything more than a 10 size drop(40" chest, 30" pants for example) starts to look odd.

for the record though most people have a 6" drop and even really ripped people have a <10" drop usually.

notice how the jacket is loose around the waist because otherwise the drop would look odd, also the pants look like they are too big for the jacket to accommodate his massive thighs, same goes for the sleeves they need to be wide to accommodate arms but it looks almost too wide at the wrist

what the suit does however hide is that his chest is huge

They do this with all clothes. If you look in any catalog, you will see tall, fit people wearing clothes that fit them.

Clothes are made for average people, who are not thin or fit. Several inches of material are clipped behind every one of those models.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

I'm a professional tailor. Otherwise known as a "stitcher" on set.

The clips you see are a way to budget lower on clothing costs and/or they couldn't get a competent tailor on set for the job.

I've tailored clothing for over 18 years. Started when I was 11 as a family business. Learned from my Mother, and her Mother taught her.

Support your local tailor. Buy a cheap suit made of half decent material, find yourself a tailor like me, and make it look like an Armani for 1/8th the price.

As for the top commenter? You don't have to have a perfect body for you to look amazing in your clothes. You just need to have them fit right - and buy for your body size/shape.

Any direct questions? Pm me!

[–]merdock379 4 points5 points ago

Well nobody answered you so I will. I just went to the thrift store the other day, I spent about $35 bucks and got 2 suits. One Joseph A. Bank, and one Brooks Brothers. They were a size too big, but its hard to pass on that deal. Brought them to my local tailor, and she made them fit me like you wouldn't believe. Fairly cheap too!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

as a guy who used to sell suits. please for the love of god listen to this man.

there's extra fabric virtually everywhere in a suit to make it bigger or smaller by about 1-1.5 inches, the only things that need to fit off the rack are the shoulders and length and everything else can be an approximate fit. this will however add at least $20 to your suit price though and could be more than $100 depending on how bad the original fit was.

[–]Really_Likes_Nutella 2 points3 points ago

Came here to say this. Also, models are all one size; for men it's a 40 Reg, size 9 shoes, 34 waist, 32 inseam (can't tell you what it is for women, but the practice is similar). It's the only size you'll find at photo shoots.
