They weren't stupid. That's how they SOLD body armor in 1923.

The man in the vest is W.H. Murphy of the Protective Garment Corp. of New York. More info here.

thank you. there is a major difference between testing if something works and showing off that it works

This is how men with balls of steel test armored glass these days.

[–]dVnt 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow, after the first hit, the bottom couple inches drops off and there a gap between that armored portion of the glass and the plate of steel below. At that range it's not like shot placement is a huge issue, but still I bet they did not account for that.

[–]LastImmortalMan 2 points3 points ago

Actually they do account for that, that portion of the glass is not armored because it goes on top of a section of the car that is already plated. With the material being so heavy, it makes sense to try and reduce the weight as much as possible while stile maintaining an aesthetic appeal.

...I'm not talking about it being mounted to a car. I'm talking about the danger of the setup in this video.

I also saw gaps in it... I mean it's a small chance that someone will put a bullet through that gap... But people win the lottery all the time...

Ahh, gotcha! IMO though I think their is pretty much no danger at all here, these guys work with guns and bullet-proofing things, by that token alone one would have to assume they have the utmost respect for the equipment they are working with.

Shooter could easily have taken some backsplash at that range. He never lowered his glasses.

Aw, damn. I was JUST about to take my AK-47 and bullet-resistant windshield out of the shed to try this with my friend, BUT they told me to not try this at home...

Next picture: how they tested body bags in 1923.

[–]iamadogforreal 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, I wouldn't try this with kevlar but these guys were using big ass steel plates. The only thing that could go wrong here is the other guy missing and hitting in the neck or face. Once that soft lead bullet hits that steel its just going to bounce off or crumple into a cold slug.

Also, this isn't testing, this is posed sales photo.

[–]ItsOnlyNatural 1 point2 points ago

Also that's probably a .32 S&W Long so not even that much oomph behind the soft lead.

I can understand the reason for the shooter to wear body armor too.

Did they have armor for their giant balls too?

[–]drruuuqqqqsssss 0 points1 point ago

The size of their balls is directly proportional to their jaws; enormous.

they still do that today. theres a guy that makes bullet proof vests and he shoots his employees daily.

A vest like that will only stop bullets from small handguns.

Even modern body armor can be defeated by high-powered rifles like those used during WW2. So for infantry use, such a body armor wouldn't be much use.

They were however used by pilots, where the thread wasn't as much direct fire but rather debris and fragments from air-bursting anti-air cannons.

During WW1 all sides experimented with bodyarmor.

Germans fielded steel bodyarmor that got the nickname lobster-armor as well as reinforced front-plates for the helmets. The body armor proved rather ineffective and was often penetrated by direct hits. The helmetplate was slightly more effective but could still be penetrated. It was mostly used for sentry duty as a protection from snipers, as it was too heavy to be used for assault.

The American army also experimented with steel bodyarmor called the Brewster armor, which had sloped edges that would cause the bullets to glance off. The idea was that you could walk across the field with your front toward the enemy, and all the bullets would ricochet off your armor. The idea wasn't exactly a success, since the bodyarmor weighted 18kg, making it nearly impossible to walk across anything but a completely flat hard surface.

I do remember reading about the lobster armor in an old WWI picture book I had in 5th grade, I have no doubt that it was next to useless against rifle fire but I do wonder how it helped in close combat. I remember reading an article on cracked about the effectiveness of body armor. You have some very good information here and I do appreciate you taking the time to share it with me. I remember hearing about the effectiveness of helmets and how they served mostly as a psychological tool for a soldier, they wouldn't stop a bullet but they would make the guy wearing it feel more secure, but I still think vests like these would have been helpful in dealing with things like shrapnel.

Which would you like me to go into details about? modern armor or early armor?

There are more things on the battlefield that can injure you than just bullets. Mostly debris and fragments from explosion. A helmet offers almost full protection from these. Combined with a good set of ballistic-goggles, the most vital parts of your head is protected. A helmet is not to be considered bulletproof, but I have seen quite a few examples of a bullet penetrating a helmet, changing direction, and bypassing the head. So a helmet is more than a psychological security-blanket.

Basically modern military armor consist of two things. Soft-body-armor (kevlar) and hard-body-armor (a solid plate made of various components). Soft-body-armor is only good for fragmentation and debris, and to some extend pistol fire. (which isn't too common on the battlefield)

Hard-body-armor is what will take force of a direct shot from a rifle, and is used in combination with soft-body armor. It comes in many classes. Some can take multiple shots while other shatter and crumple when hit. The later will usually be able to take a more powerful shot than the multiple-hit plates.

Even if a bullet should make it through the ballistic plate, there is a great change that the bullet is slowed down enough for the soft-body-armor to catch it.

The hard-body armor only covers the most vital organs (heart and lungs) This means you are still vulnerable from the sides, which have lead to a somewhat awkward looking combat stance that you might have seen on pictures or videos, where the soldier is standing with his full front toward his target and his rifle resting at the center of his chest. (as opposed to the earlier rifle stances where you more or less have your side toward your target).

One thing I'd like to add to the WW1 armor list, is the french cuirass. It was made in the early days of the war. Only a couple of thousands were made, but the extraordinary thing about them is that they weighted less than 3kg, meaning you could actually move around with them. They of course was not bulletproof at all, but could take fragmentation and battlefield debris. They did however have a drawback (as with other metal armor of the period), that if penetrated you wouldn't just have a bullet wound, but also have wounds from metal debris from the armor.
