I think it's about how destructive domestic cats can be to the local wildlife...
EDIT: Because this kinda blew up, I want to clarify that I own 5 indoor/outdoor cats, and I understand all the arguments for and against.
[–]mmmbvjhgckhg 232 points233 points234 points 10 months ago*
which is why they should be equipped with a bell
EDIT: I understand that the bell will be uncomfortable to the animal, however it is better than having the cat decimate the local species. I own a cat and it was has repeatedly killed lizards, birds and whatnot.
[–]twilightmoons 513 points514 points515 points 10 months ago*
We had bells on our cats. It worked for a week for the smaller female. She learned to move so the bell did not make a sound at all. If she was just walking around or running, we'd hear her. If she did not want to be heard, she was silent.
A faint jingle during the final pounce was the last thing many a bird, squirrel, or rat heard when she was an outdoor cat.
The big white one learned that the collars were break-away ones, designed to keep from strangling cats if they got caught on a branch or fence post. He learned that quickly, too, so we went though three or four before we caught him just taking it off as soon as he was outside the house.
Now, it's just easier to confine them in the gulag of our house to prevent the wanton destruction of all animal life around the neighborhood. Instead, they look out through the prison windows when they're not sleeping, remembering the freedom they once had. The male will often sit at the windowsill in my office (6-ft windows, low to the ground) for a while, with one arm up on it like he's at a bar somewhere, waiting for a drink that never comes. If you come into the room, he just looks at you for a second, and then back to the world outside.
As the prison warden, I sometimes let them out on a leash. The big white one lies on the ground, and you have to drag him around. The female will go with me, but will try and flee at every opportunity. That's gratitude for you...
[–]liberalis 121 points122 points123 points 10 months ago
Cats are ninjas, no doubt.
[–]skillybee 27 points28 points29 points 10 months ago
Agreed. I had a cat that was obsessed with chipmunks. The bell did not help. She'd bring me home a head + organ sack every few weeks. Assuming she ate the rest. I got pretty good at doing the inside-out sandwich bag removal trick. Feigned gratitude. Her heart was in the right place. So was the chipmunk's.

Stupid human can't hunt by itself. It has no claws. How can it hunt with no claws? I shall bring it some food, lest my play toy starve to death. I am truly a benevolent godcat.

This happened with my cats. My solution was to add more bells.
[–]EndymionAwake 17 points18 points19 points 10 months ago
Eventually there is just the mass of assorted bells slowly skulking through the land, shiny but silent in its motions until a pounce: The bird ends up dead and the whole neighborhood knows that the bellcat of 2nd street is fed once again.
[–]pydnar 33 points34 points35 points 10 months ago
Cats are a major threat to the endangered native birds in my area, and it's an important issue to me, so let me just say thank you for keeping your cats indoors (and using a leash when you take them out)! It's nice to see a cat owner who respects all the other animals around.

[–]twilightmoons 28 points29 points30 points 10 months ago
I'm a harsh warden but a fair one. Food, water, a bed, scratches behind the ears, and a savage beating every once in a while.
Strangely enough, they actually like being beaten on the haunches. They'll lie there and purr like mad while I just keep slapping the leg muscles. For the big male, I'll beat him until my hand hurts, and he'll just look at me when stop and scoot over closer and show his belly. The smaller female I don't beat her as hard because I don't want to hurt her, but she yowls like she's in heat - arches her back, purrs like mad, turns and twists all around, shows her belly, and if I stop, she'll yowl in a very angry tone and bat my hand.
This generally makes me feel like a pervert for doing it.
[–]remember_khitomer 15 points16 points17 points 10 months ago
This phenomenon is well documented in youtube videos.
Exhibit A
[–]twilightmoons 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
That's pretty light by my cats' standards... they like to be beaten like red-headed stepchildren. Seriously - my hand will hurt after a short while on the big one, but he just wants more!
[–]lackofbrain 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Try scratching right at the base of the tail (on top, not up their arse - around here I might have to specify!) - it used to make my parents cats go bonkers!
[–]amemut 12 points13 points14 points 10 months ago
The lack of apostrophe on "parents" leads me to the conclusion that you were raised by cats.
[–]lackofbrain 6 points7 points8 points 10 months ago
It is certainly a reasonable conclusion. Let's just say I have tortured every mouse I have ever eaten.
[–]rususeruru 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
You're stimulating sexual nerves on the cat. Your best bet it to try and startle them or use a spray bottle, but be warned some using a spray bottle will stress some cats and cause them to develop bald spots.
[–]twilightmoons 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
They are spayed and neutered, so this is all they get.

[–]Taniwha_NZ 17 points18 points19 points 10 months ago
Many years ago I owned a pretty cool Birman cat called 'Roti', due to her incredible appettite for indian food. Roti had a very hard early life, as she was hit by a truck when she was only about 3 months old, and spent the next 12 months confined to a large box while she had two legs in a cast and numerous bandages and stitched wounds that all needed to be treated carefully. She did make a full physical recovery, but mentally she was never quite right. She was definitely more nervous as a result of the accident and the long recovery.
Anyway, my girlfriend at the time decided she needed a bell around her neck to protect the native birds that populated our garden. I've never been a fan of bells on cats, but the reason seemed to make sense.
So one day she came home from the supermarket with a bell, and I attached it to Roti's existing collar. She stood up, made perhaps two steps toward the door, heard the bell and went absolutely mental with panic. Unfortunately she went straight for the outside door, and once she was outside we couldn't keep up with her.
We didn't see her for 4 days, but we heard little bell sounds every few hours, mostly from underneath the house, where she would usually hunt mice before she had a fucking bell tied around her neck.
We left food under the house, but she never touched it. After 4 days she just came walking back in through the door, looking shattered, skinny, and mangy as hell. As I walked toward her, she looked at me and the bell rang jsut a little bit, but even that was enough to scare her and she shot like a dart under the couch. It took about 15 minutes to persuade her to come out from under various bit of furniture, without setting off the bell again. If the bell ever rang, she would take off again and hide somewhere else.
BY this stage I was both frustrated but incredibly sad for her. The poor fucking cat had obviously been stuck under the house for the whole 4 days, simply unable to do any normal cat activities because the bell would ring every time she moved and she would just run around like a spastic until she stopped moving just long enough for the bell to be quiet. And then she would stay there, like a statue, for minutes at a time.
While I was sad for her and felt terribly guilty about it, it as also fucking hilarious to see the poor thing.
Eventually I got a hand to her, and quickly just pulled the collar over her head, as it was pretty loose to begin with. I let her go immediately and she did a huge shake like she was drying out after getting wet. Then she squatted, looked me in the eye, and did the biggest cat shit I've ever seen. I have never seen her doing a crap before, cats are usually quite private about it, but I realised this poor cat hadn't been able to complete a shit for 4 days. Every time she would have tried, the bell would have rung for some reason and her attempt at crapping would be stopped in it's tracks.
God knows how many times she had tried to take a shit without getting one out.
Straight after the shit she walked over to her feeding area and took a huge drink of water and ate about 2 meals worth of food right then, without stopping. Yeah, she hadn't been able to eat or drink anything either, because that fucking bell would go off when she chewed and scare her shitless.
She got a lot of attention for the rest of the evening, and my GF bought her a new bed and some new toys just out of guilt. We both felt really cruel about it, even though we never intended the cat to freak out like that. But once we were happy that she was OK, we laughed our asses off; it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen a cat do. Just the idea of this poor animal being unable to eat, shit, sleep, or do pretty much anything without setting off some strange loud noise that seemed to be attached to her own neck... it's nasty but if I'm honest I'm still smiling now, 20 years later, remembering the look of relief and the huge crap she took the instant she was freed.
TL;DR: Don't assume your cat will be cool with having a fucking bell tied to it's neck. Even if it's not as twitchy and mental as our cat was, that bell is still going to fuck up it's hunting habits and it might not like wearing it at all. Pay attention over the first few days.
[–]alvinm 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
This is a great story, thanks. Poor cat... Maybe the driver honked the horn before hitting her and that was why she would go crazy?
[–]thebitchrake 12 points13 points14 points 10 months ago
My cats have always had bells. I get various small animals as gifts at least twice a week during the summer. The hummingbird was my favourite.
[–]amemut 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Are you Canadian?
[–]thebitchrake 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Yep! Um, why?
[–]amemut 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
Hummingbirds only live in the Americas, but people in the US write "favorite." Plus, as far as I know, most people in Latin and South America learn US English, so I figured it had to be Canada. I was just wondering if I was right.
Thanks.

[–]KoNP 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
Which is why the two cats I own are entirely indoor cats. One of them has been since basically the day he was born and now the outside SCARES HIM. On the odd occasions we take them outside (on little kitty harness leashes, cute as hell) he stands on the patio with his tail fluffed up looking rather terrified, and all we have to do is open the door and undo the harness and he bolts back inside without fail. To him, outside is fine as long as it's behind a window.
I knew exactly what this comic was getting at as soon as I saw the little human go through the small catflap on the door.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
My interpretation was that we are no better than the other animals in the world. We are just as destructive.
[–]RedMushtoom 18 points19 points20 points 10 months ago
No, we're way more destructive. Animals form an equilibrium with their environment and the renewable resources available.
[–]elusiveallusion 11 points12 points13 points 10 months ago
In geological-time terms, humanity as a species will indeed reach equilibrium again in a rapid way. It's not like biological systems are ever static - just look at the effects of other invasive species. Some of those may be the fault of humans, but many aren't. Again, in the geological scale, the vast majority aren't.
[–]justskidding 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Not always.
Though it's unclear if Crown of Thorns starfish are exploding in population and killing coral reefs because of human intervention or not. Introduction of invasive species that can ruin ecology of some areas, even if accidental. See invasive grass species and other plants in the US (Tumbleweeds did not exist in America before the late 1800's. They're russian in origin), or the ecological crisis that is Australia, with the rabbits and rats and mice, driving the native marsupials to extinction - to the point we tried to induce a viral genocide (myxomatosis) into the rabbit population, but they acquired resistance to it.
[–]OddCrow 6 points7 points8 points 10 months ago
But only because they don't have the means to destroy and harvest like we do. Any animal with a human's mental and physical capability would probably do the same things.
[–]callmelucky 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Any animal with a human's mental and physical capability
Like a human, for example?
[–]OddCrow 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Well, humans are indeed animal's with a human's mental and physical capability.
[–]JustJonny 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago*
I think hands are also a prerequisite. Dolphins and elephants are around the same as humans, but lacking any means to create and use tools, they're stuck living without them, other than simple little things like scratching themselves with sticks or throwing dead fish around like balls.
[–]anonymousanger 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
By "form an equilibrium" of course you mean there are factors that keep them in check, like scarce resources, predators, competition, climate, terrain, disease, etc. We're simply clever enough to overcome some of those factors or cope with them to a much greater extent than other animals. Nobody's content to be at an "equilibrium", they're just stuck there.
[–]bythog 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
Reason 22 to keep cats indoors at all times.
[–]Matrinka 22 points23 points24 points 10 months ago
Or one of the reasons to own a cat. My parents have outdoor cats mainly so that they DO kill small animals. Cats keep away mice (that get into the house), rats, squirrels (that knock chestnuts onto the roof, which causes damage AND could break the skylight), kill the moles that ruin the lawn, and kill the muskrats that live around our pond and kill all the fish.
[–]ThisIsYerBrainOnCats 10 points11 points12 points 10 months ago
I want to know what kind of shitty skylight you have that could be cracked by falling chestnuts.
What do you do when it hails?
[–]RevOtisElevator 10 points11 points12 points 10 months ago
Naturally the cats capture and eat the hail.

[–]CodeGirlUK 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago*
Indeedy - UK and US don't have the same culture, so country is important.
Edit - also a lack of coyotes, bears, mountain lions or scorpions.
[–]Thjoth 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
People always talk about Australia having lots of things that want to kill you if you go outside, but I think the US places a strong second. ESPECIALLY the South.
[–]EndymionAwake 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Well in America it is for the most part a fair fight. Australia's death dealers use stealth and poison, like its the island where all the villainous criminal scum animals were sent. Over in America we have proud creatures that kill you in a proper fight gnashing tooth and bone, albeit sometimes using ambush tactics unlike the animals in the UK.
[–]scythus 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
In England also. I've never met a single person who keeps their cat indoors at all times, and I've met lots of people with cats. City or countryside. I've gathered that's quite common in other countries.
Culture, of course.
Here it's unusual to have indoor only cats, we would consider that cruel unless it's for their own benefit (like they have FIV).
[–]OddCrow 16 points17 points18 points 10 months ago
Not to be a dick. But humans literally give EVERYTHING these animals need to them, all in exchange for a little companionship.
If someone lives in an apartment building, or busy residential area, or hell even up here in Tahoe (coyotes), putting your cat outside in some areas is at best stupid and at worst heartwrenching.
[–]CodeGirlUK 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
Hence why the country part is also important - no coyotes in England.
[–]OddCrow 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
That's geography. Not culture.
[–]CodeGirlUK 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
True, but the two reflect upon each other - no coyotes, so culturally acceptable to have outdoor cats.
[–]Hamlet7768 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
Culture is affected by geography, but you do have a point there.
[–]ThisIsYerBrainOnCats 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago

[–]sicnevol 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago

[–]polarbear_15 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago
Ah, alrighty. I live in the desert, so if I let my cat it, he'll be eaten by coyotes or bears or mountain lions or thousands of scorpions.
why do you consider it cruel? by what standard?
cats GET FIV by going outside. How do you think that's transmitted?
[–]implicate 8 points9 points10 points 10 months ago
TIL That there is cat AIDS.
Glad I could edumacate someone :)
From what I understand, there are far fewer problems in the UK than there are in the US with having an outdoor cat. In the US, there are a good deal of bigger animals that could have a cat for lunch.
If I lived in Britain (which I wish I could, but I'd be an outcast), I'd probably let my cat out. But here? Nope. There's foxes, coyotes, and large cars driven by people who don't give a shit about my cat.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
Reason 1: They live longer.
[–]Rednav987 22 points23 points24 points 10 months ago
They live longer because there's no danger of them getting eaten by a bigger animal. But if you're a cat, what's the point of living then? That's why so many house cats are fat fucks that sleep all day.
[–]Hush399 28 points29 points30 points 10 months ago
You either die a villain or live long enough to see yourself become a fat cat.
[–]autobahn 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I've said this above, but you're assigning human values to the life of a cat.
If you were a cat, you don't want to go outside because it makes life worthwhile, you do it because your instincts tell you to murder everything, fuck everything, and get as much territory as possible. It's not some sort of romantic "being outside is wonderful" sort of thing.
Word. Cats living indoors forever is just cruel IMO.
[–]Jill4ChrisRed 7 points8 points9 points 10 months ago
it's not so cruel when you're protecting them from cars. Where I live, cats kept indoors IS pretty cruel and unnecessairy since there's so much farmland in the area and little roads. Where my best friend lives, it's just common sense to keep them indoors because if they stepped outside, they'd most likely get killed by a car. She does take them out on a leash now and then for exercise, but they usually play with each other for hours (chase each other around the house, like they're playing tag or hide and seek, or even playfight) so they don't need exercising much.
Can we all just agree that whether or not you keep you cat indoors or not is completely situational, in every case, no matter what?
[–]cuppincayk 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
They're also pretty fucking harsh on the environment, especially in the city/suburbs where most cat owners live. If you live on a farm, that's fine, but there are a lot of endangered species out of there thanks to cats. Also a lot of pissed off people who have acorns in their yard that the rodents aren't picking up :P
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
What about in a place like Chicago, Seattle, NYC, etc.? Winters are sub-freezing, there are cars everywhere, and almost no one has a fenced-in yard.
[–]uv0001 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
I say, if you live in the right area and have a big enough property far from the road, let him go outside. But only if it was initially an outside cat from kittenhood.
[–]Londron 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
Life isn't about how long it is...
Anyway, living in Belgium I consider keeping cats inside just cruel. Well, unless it's a Brittisch shorthair or something. They're more or less made for it.
And people in apartment and such? Don't get cats then, it's that simple.
About the wild life. I don't see the point in keeping rats, moles and mice around our house of any benefit.
[–]ast03 4 points5 points6 points 10 months ago

No really. It's the car. She hates technology. Abso-fucking-lutely hates it.
She knows where to poop, though. She only fucks up if she has the "icky-poops," as I like to call them.

I would argue that it's about how humans exterminate and slaughter all animals, before heading home and acting nice to their own pets, completely disregarding and dehumanizing the animals that they eat and the ones who are murdered by our industry.

Oh man... these are all gold.
And this one is pretty subtle. Wow.
[–]anexanhume 95 points96 points97 points 10 months ago
He didn't leave it on the doorstep. He's not proud enough of his accomplishments to show them to master.
[–]hulk_krogan 133 points134 points135 points 10 months ago
That's not pride your cat is trying to convey, it's contempt. They bring you dead things because they consider you an inept hunter.
[–]Volpethrope 43 points44 points45 points 10 months ago
Indeed. The correct response to a cat doing this is to slap it, then go murder something yourself and dump its corpse in the cat's bed. Who's inept now, bitch?
[–]hulk_krogan 68 points69 points70 points 10 months ago
"Honey, why are you dragging a deer carcass into the house?"
"I'm teaching this stupid cat a lesson in humility."
[–]AllegraGeller 16 points17 points18 points 10 months ago
Extra points for running the deer down over the course of days and killing it by ripping out its throat with your teeth.

[–]your_aunt_pam 13 points14 points15 points 10 months ago
If I had a cat I would make it a point every once in a while to buy like ten steaks, unwrap the packaging and walk through the door while holding them. Just to show the cat that it still has lots to learn.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago
No way, the doorstep drop-off is the cats contribution to the house. Every time we go shopping they think we have executed a masterful hunt. It's probably part of the reason they love humans, we have mastered the meat.
[–]fknbastard 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
I AM an inept hunter. No killer instinct when it comes to animals...just people
[–]heyrey 13 points14 points15 points 10 months ago
After owning cats most of my life... I don't think they view humans as masters. The most aloof ones view humans as a source for meals only, and the most interactive and affectionate ones treat you like mother cat, with all the brattiness and clinginess that goes along with a parent/child dynamic.
[–]kittenkraze 22 points23 points24 points 10 months ago
Actually, cats just leave their prey on their owners' doorstep to say "obviously you're too stupid to know how to hunt, so I'm doing it for you."
[–]kolossal 5 points6 points7 points 10 months ago*
I always show this article to anyone who owns a cat

Thanks for stealing an image of a comic and uploading to a third party hosting site while ignoring the clearly stated creative commons license terms so the author gets no pageviews and has no chance of making any revenue from his work. Asshole.
Edit: link to original comic in context- http://maneggs.com/2011/03/30/man/
Scroll down to the bottom and read the terms of "Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License".
I don't actually think that the OP is trying to rip off the author or that he/she is a genuine asshole.
[–]Hands 60 points61 points62 points 10 months ago
Your righteous anger might be a bit more valid if you linked to the author's website yourself. Just a thought.

Jesus fucking Christ, that's guy's a dick. Ignore him. Complete asshole who wants to feel better about himself, so he goes and rages at someone just trying to share something interesting.
[–]dbbo -1 points0 points1 point 10 months ago
Yeah, I am a dick. But complaining doesn't make me feel better. I just happen to care about freedom and intellectual property, unlike half of the internet.
[–]shamananana 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago

Don't be a dick to OP, and DON'T FUCKING ASSUME THEY KNOW THE ORIGINAL SOURCE YOU COMPLETE ASSHOLE.
[–]Lyucit 17 points18 points19 points 10 months ago
But.. the source is right there. On the image. Clearly visible.
Attribution is an important thing in webcomic land. Many webcomic artists spend a considerable amount of time on making their stuff. For some artists, it's their full time job. There are two ways, generally, that they get money from what they do- ads and merchandise.
Ads is straightforward- more pageviews generally translates to more money. Merchandise is the main reason, however, that it's better to link to the site than a rehosted image. Webcomics thrive on a dedicated fanbase, which is expanded primarily through word of mouth. If you find yourself on a webcomic's page, you're much more likely to read through the other comics and become a fan.
When you rehost an image, you deprive the author of notoriety, fans and ad revenue, and make it harder for the people viewing the content to find similar stuff they might enjoy.
See something? Cite something. It's better for everyone, most of the time, and is really easy to do with a few seconds of tineye, google reverse image search, or even just plain google.
[–]ialsolovebees 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
If you like the comic, you'll notice the link. Then you'll go to the site and continue to look at their various other comics.
I don't see the big problem.
[–]thrownawayd 3 points4 points5 points 10 months ago
The more and more time I spend on Reddit I feel you guys have an unhealthy fascination with cats, bordering on worshiping them. I believe somewhere in the psyche of the internet we have it that cats are superior beings while we are the cancer. It reminds me a lot of what I've read of Egyptian culture though not exactly in the same sense. Also, [4].

[–]athyistrabbi 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
having grown up with cats I have had to clean up after their many attrocities. The usual is just squirrel tails and a few dead mice, but one day I found a dove in my backyard. I looked pretty jacked up and very dead so I tried to pick it up with a shovel, turns out it wasn't dead yet. My cat had decided to maim the bird and then leave it. Freaking out I ran to my dad and told him what had happened. Very calmly over his newspaper he told me to kill it. I asked with what and he replyed "just use the ax". So i went to the shed, picked up a large two handed ax and stood next to the bird debating whether or not I was going to do it. I lined it up and did a few practice swings not wanting to cause this bird any more pain than it was already in. As I lifted the ax above my head the bird twitches and I swear it looked me in the eye. I swung the ax and hit home. The ax was blunt. I broke the poor creature in half. Thats when it really started freaking out and I picked the ax up again and kept swinging until the poor creature stopped moving.
I dug a hole by the fence in my yard, a lot deeper than I had ever buried any other animal. I even left a stick there to mark the spot.
poor bird.
