Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

I hate election years, it turns about 40% of my friends into easily offended assholes who can't talk about anything but politics.

I just wanted to play smash brothers god dammit.

The ratio of complainers to voters is disproportionate.

There are many things that you can vote by complaining. For example what movie to see.

[–]forgotpasswerd 6 points7 points ago

And if the complaining fails, you can filibuster the movie.

I have a buddy who without fail ANYTIME I'm in a good mood and just wanna play some games, will send me some crushingly depressing Political article. (NDAA, SOPA, Paultardery, etc.)

I've taken to just closing the window and changing the subject.

I'm powerless to do shit about it and I'm not going to let it ruin my day.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

[–]Sweddy 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm powerless to do shit about it

Aaaaand therein lies the problem with America....

[–]citat3962 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes I'm well aware that's the problem. Care to suggest a solution that doesn't involve quitting my job and camping out in NYC indefinitely? Or running for political office which I'm completely unqualified for?

WTF are you doing to fix this "problem with america" now that we're on the subject?

I'm fairly convinced we're in a downward spiral into a Plutocracy but I don't really see a way of turning the tide.

EDIT: Paultardery I'm referring to is him toeing the republican party line pandering for the nomination. My friend is very Anti-Ron Paul and I was initially a supporter. I'm fairly convinced now he's a backstabber like every other jackass in or seeking a political office.

[–]808state 10 points11 points ago

I never miss a voting day. local or federal.

I think we can all agree voting doesn't do shit. We vote for a guy who we want and they don't want.... they recount FL until the man they want to win wins.

We vote for a guy who says everything we want done. And he gets bought/threatened into doing exactly the opposite of what the people put him in office to do. Ends up almost as bad as the guy we just got rid of.

As for reading every rag he sends me... I just can't be bothered. I get the gist and agree with most of what he sends me but reading every word just gets depressing.

Obama is a traitor to the people who voted for him

Ron Paul is a Religion loving wolf in sheep's clothing who thinks we can just pull the plug on any service he thinks the free market or charitable people will fill the need for. Under the libertarian model my Little bro would be DEAD. This is not a viable model for a country and anyone who thinks it is is a selfish cunt with no use for those services.

Romney is a Mormon..... nuff said there. If you'll believe that bullshit what ELSE will you believe?

Santorum is a mixture of feces and lube. also a social Conservative, so he could die in a fire and I'd throw a party.

NDAA is the beginning of 1984

SOPA will end Reddit

OWS raised awareness but the supporters will probably be put into military prisons without trial next year under NDAA

My congress person was one of two representatives ((D)Polis not Pelosi) who actually opposed NDAA and proposed the amendment to exempt US citizens which was later voted against.

I'm quite up to date. I'm just not convinced reading articles that make me hate all politicians equally is going to make a change. I'm not at ALL convinced my vote is anything more than .gov giving us the illusion of a choice.

He'll back stab us just like every other politician ever. I bought Obama's Bullshit promises most of which never came up outside a campaign speech.

End the drug war, shrink our military to a defensive force, cut unnessisary spending.. it all sounds really nice when paul is trying to get MY vote.

But on the other side he's toeing the Republican party line for the nomination promising anti abortion bullshit and talking down on separation of church and state.

People DO NOT need to lay off the paulster. He's just another Obama from the other party. Pretty campaign speeches and fuck all for action if we elect him.

[–]Subcidal 2 points3 points ago

It's extremely hard to do anything with these people in this country.

If everybody just agreed to quit fucking paying taxes on the same day, And just shut the entire country down, Then we could actually fix some shit.

[–]citat3962 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see any feasible way that would affect the change we want.

Let me guess. Libertarian that thinks we can make america great by letting the poor starve and causing another economic meltdown following some dumb old Russian's bullshit storybooks?

[–]forgotpasswerd 2 points3 points ago

Jesus man, you bought into the evil Libertarian line completely. Kind of scary.

[–]citat3962 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No more evil than the rest of them to be honest. Everyone's approach leaves someone screwed. Some more than others.

Enlighten me on how dumping all federal programs and cutting spending without consideration won't leave people starving in the streets while the "free market" figures out how to make a buck off their suffering.

[–]Subcidal 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What would the government do if they had no income?

Seriously? You can't figure that out? This is the problem with America.

[–]citat3962 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What is the problem with America? That I don't agree that we can get enough people together for not paying our taxes to make any difference?

I'm pretty sure a tactic like that will just get you a dry ass fucking by the IRS Long before the government notices your pittance isn't in the coffers.

I mean sure if we could get 50% of the population to follow suit something might come of it.... But if we could get 50% of the population to agree on something and then follow through maybe we wouldn't be where we are now.

[–]Subcidal 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hence my original reply.....

If everybody just agreed to quit fucking paying taxes on the same day, And just shut the entire country down, Then we could actually fix some shit.

And the problem with America is that it's full of idiots....

[–]sprankton 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The column of gas expelled from a starter pistol can kill at point-blank range.

[–]aphasic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really. Maybe the column of gas from an actual firearm with an actual firearm-sized charge of powder in the blank could kill you, but have you ever seen a starter pistol blank? It's smaller than a .22 short, barely bigger than caps that kids use. And many starter pistols don't even have a hollow barrel, for safety purposes. It's just a piece of solid steel. That way they make extra-extra sure that nothing could get wedged in there and act as a projectile.

[–]AhhhClem 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Point blank is the intersection of a bullets trajectory and the line of aim. A starter pistol has no point blank. With real pistols they are usually set up for a 25 yard or meter point blank. We need a new term for "shooting real close".

the Republicans pick up a few more seats in the house.

I see the house changing hands every 2-4 years as voters hop from one foot to the other, reacting to how much they hate congress. I see the house going to the democrats, and the senate becoming much closer to 50/50, just based on what seats are up for election.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not willing to call it just yet. It'll obviously be Obama vs. Romney, but it remains to be seen if the right wing's distaste for Obama is strong enough to outweigh the mediocrity of Mitt Romney. I also think Obama's turnout will be less than before because so many left-wingers (myself included) are fed up with his broken promises and weak leadership. Assuming the conversatives come out in force to vote against Obama, they might just win.

That said, I'm pretty sure you're right. It's never good to assume an election is a done deal though, please go out and vote.

[–]Self_Hating_Liberal 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People vote because they hate the other guy, not because they like their guy. As a well known GOP political strategist noted in 1968, fear is what drives American politics.

I also think Obama's turnout will be less than before because so many left-wingers (myself included) are fed up with his broken promises and weak leadership.

I think you have a point there, but I'm curious what you plan to do about your frustration with his lack of action. It doesn't seem like voting for a republican is a solution for a "left-winger," and not voting at all won't do anyone any good. I'm personally open to seeing how things play out and not devoted to any party, but It will take a whole lot for any Republican candidate to overcome my distaste with their social policy (Ron Paul maybe possibly excepted, but there's no chance he's going to be the candidate so yeah).

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What will I do about it? I'll smile, take it up the ass, and vote for Obama again. Obama is a massive dissapointment, but even the best Republican candidate would still have to answer to the (R) next to their name. I'm going out to vote mainly for the House elections, but while I'm there I plan on voting Obama just to put a point against the Republicans.

[–]Phallic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You dislike Obama so much you'll vote for him. That'll teach him.

[–]Tarou42 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We have "first past the post" elections. This inevitably leads to a two party system. A two party system inevitably leads to people voting for the lesser of two evils, just to try to keep the ones they don't want out of office.

It sucks, but short of election reform, there isn't any other sensible move for a self-proclaimed left-winger. Trying for a smaller party more in line with your political stance would just waste your vote.

I'm a socialist, and as such do not like how Obama's presidency has gone so far. But I can't afford to vote for a socialist candidate, because I live in a red state. It takes almost all of us with more left-leaning tendencies to band together behind a single (D) candidate to have a chance of him/her getting enough votes to win our state.

This youtube account has several excellent videos talking about elections and voting, if you're interested in more/better information.

[–]VoxNihilii 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plenty can change before the election, but it's hard to overstate the incumbency advantage and the incredible weakness of the republican field this year.

Also, if you are truly a left-winger, I urge you to vote third-party. :)

[–]Linuxispretty -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

because so many left-wingers

Sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. There are few true leftists in this country. You are probably talking about center leftism or centrism. And if you are concerning the Democratic Party, you mean centrist or center right. They may be socially left in some aspects but can be very fiscally conservative in others. /rant

Everything in the world seems more fucked up because our ability to collect and share information has become so much greater that we are flipping all the rocks and finding the horrors that have always been there. This process is incredible depressing yet makes things so much better. Not just because so many scumbags are getting caught, but because so many others are giving up on what they are doing as they see the handwriting on the wall. Every time I think I have seen the bottom of the Nixon well, something new surfaces.

Add onto that the point made by someone else about information availability and I stand by my point that it has pretty much always been retarded, we just don't realize it for the first 20 years of our lives, so we assume that it's something new.

I don't know if that qualifies as batshit insane

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

insane (ɪnˈseɪn)

— adj 1. a. mentally deranged; crazy; of unsound mind b. ( as collective noun; preceded by the ): the insane 2. characteristic of a person of unsound mind: an insane stare 3. irresponsible; very foolish; stupid

Nixon was a sociopathic git, Reagan had dementia. They were also irresponsible, foolish, and stupid and had a rather unique view of reality....

eg - "The arts, you know, they're Jews, they're left wing. In other words, stay away."

"You know, it's a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana are Jewish. What the Christ is the matter with the Jews, Bob? What is the matter with them? I suppose it is because most of them are psychiatrists."

"Many Jews in the Communist conspiracy. ... Chambers and Hiss were the only non-Jews. ... Many thought that Hiss was. He could have been a half. ... Every other one was a Jew — and it raised hell for us. But in this case, I hope to God he's not a Jew."

Or maybe you'd want a Reagan quote on Prince Charles and Princess David.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's going to be a shit show. the democratic nomination is obviously locked up. there are only really 3 republican contenders and that will work out on it's own. Then we vote. Obama is already projected to win unless something ridiculous happens. Even if the economic climate is not favoring Obama, Romney being an out of work business man worth a quarter billion is not in any better position. I see this being the smoothest election we've had in a long while.

I spent my early 20's as a lot do. Getting super angry at the process and the sitting President (at the time Bush) I spent my mid 20's trying to engage people. I spent my late 20's telling people I didn't care. I spent my early 30's not paying attention. I am spending my mid 30's watching it like a cartoon. Whats next?

I saw some of that on the web, how was it? Let me at least give you this, I have been active on and off since 1981 and never have I seen such disgust and pent up pressure on a global scale. America was more pissed off under Nixon and I have seen other countries be madder at some past point than now, but never such a moment of every one looking across borders and going "Are you over this crap? Really? That much? Us too!" as now.

[–]alphanovember 0 points1 point ago

You mean when Obama is elected by a landslide when he defeats Romney in Novemeber?

2016 is the election to watch out for. Disillusion with the Obama administration will be high, and the GOP will make an amazing comeback the likes of which have not been seen since the 1960s.
