Fun fact Mayan facts:

The Mayan calendar doesn't end on 2012. That date is just one date, kind of near the bottom of their calendar. The calendar in question, called the long calendar, was only created due to the Mayan short calendar repeating dates every 18,980 days.

To solve the problem of exact repetition of dates, the Mayan's created a long count calendar. December 21st, 2012 is simply the date on the calendar that signifies a completion of one cycle of the long count. So, by the Mayan Calendar, we are simply beginning the next "b'ak'tun".

When I was touring the Coba ruins in Mexico, I believe the tour guide showed that the last written date on the long calendar was equivalent to the year 4 quintillion or something like that.

It wouldn't really matter. It's not like we use the calendar anyway, and there is no more significane to it ending then your wall calendar ending.

Whoever says it means the world is going to end probably also believes you can travel back in time by flying around the world and over the international date line repeatedly.
