A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

First multiplayer for me was Doom1 using a direct Dialup to my brother when I was away. Otherwise, we used a nullmodem cable.

First online with strangers was using Quakeworld.

I moved to that shortly after Mechwarrior 2. :)

Miss all mech games, but have lost touch with what there is these days that matches up

I just used to build small frame mechs with speed and enough fire-power that if everything fired at once it would remove a limb but put me on the edge of overheating.

This game, Hawken, looks like a nice combination of mech combat and FPS:

Yeah, it had its own online system called Netmech. You could also play it online using an old program called Mplayer.

Oh god. Mplayer. Why the fuck does that program evoke nostalgia in me.

Keepin' it classy, r/gaming? The point of my comment was that I disliked the program. I'm so sorry I didn't make that easier for you to understand. Thanks for putting up with how much of a fucking idiot I am! :)

That game scared me. I don't really know how old I was when I played it... but I know Doom II wasn't scary and Heretic was.

C&c for me. Modem play.

Mw2 online seemed complicated - only played a few games mostly with mechs completely filled with LRMs

First for me was Quake 2 on heat.net.

It might be nostalgia but I have yet to find an experience so pure as that game online.

First multiplayer was Doom, followed closely by Descent. First modded multiplayer was Duke Nukem 3D. My buddy and I would mod an ini file in Duke 3D to add some hilarity. The thing I really remember is making it so you couldn't see tripwire mines unless you had night vision goggles on. I did play Mech Warrior and Mech Warrior 2 multiplayer, just not as much.

Now, does anyone remember this? One of the best things Microsoft ever made.

I've been trying to find mechwarrior games for a while now with little success, anyone know where I could get ahold of, say, mechwarrior 4? And I know they released it free recently but I've never been able to get their downloader working or find a good torrent, and at this point I'd happily pay a few bucks for a solid copy. I've never played these and they look too awesome to ignore :-)

Thanks yall
