Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It has been proved that there is no evidence of Ostrich burying their head in the ground. Over 90k Ostrich, over 100 years of research and no case of this kind of behavior. Let me doubt the veracity of the picture.

The rumor is well know to come from a movie called "The Dead Guy" (1911) where the antagonist yells "DONT LET THE OSTRICH BURY THE HEAD".

[–]rocketwidget 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, from an evolutionary perspective, burying your head in the sand when confronted with danger would be quite a puzzle to explain.

[–]nodefect 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I was quite surprised that it would only be from the 20th century.

I heard it's not just some stupid rumor spread by uninformed people, but an actual illusion due to some mirage effect that gives the impression that the ostrich is burying its head, while it is actually just eating something on the ground.

From all the people who don't want to vote for Romney or Ron Paul. I know that sounds obvious, but throughout the entire primary season Republican voters have been changing their support from candidate to candidate, trying to find a candidate that is not Mitt Romney. First it was Michelle Bachmann, then Rick Perry, then Herman Cain, then Newt Gingrich. Each of these candidates comes with a lot of baggage and are not really electable in the general election, so they lost the support from what some people are calling the "anti-Romney voters." Santorum just happened to be the lucky one as that group shifted their support to him in time for the caucuses.

[–]fjgw1[S] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I really needed to look this guy up, because I only knew Romney, Paul, Bachmann, Perry, Cain and Gingrich (through Reddit and probably because of all the mistakes/affairs/weird quotes they made, except for Paul), but is Santorum a guy who would hit the football like Whack-the-weasel?

[–]SchroeKatz 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looking up Santorum will lead some people to a unpleasant surprise.

[–]Aethari 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Santorum is a special kind of religious nutball that makes jokers like Bachmann seem entirely sane. He's an unabashed Christian theocrat who gives earnest talks about the moral danger of legal contraception. He brought a stillborn child home from the hospital to sleep with and introduce to his other children. He's also a fan of war with Iran. I don't think he has much of a grasp on reality.

[–]soxy 12 points13 points ago

[–]Aethari 105 points106 points ago

I don't think it's a cheapshot at all. If you're running to be President of the United States, I think that your ability to cope with extreme emotions in a sane way is a highly relevant question.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

I think Obama just got crushed by the actual obligations of the job - lots of pandering to do. He's still a decent president, the best in a long time, and he's trying to repair America's fucked-up healthcare system. Unless Ron Paul is his opponent I think he deserves a second term.

[–]keyboardsmash 84 points85 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't you find Ron Paul's view on abortion, don't ask don't tell, gay rights in general, and universal health care to be problematic?

[–]below66 64 points65 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I find that all problematic, I'm against a lot of the stuff Ron Paul says and wants to do, but he's a wrench in the mechanical system, he's a big FU to corporate interest collusion with government, he's the only consistent non-corporate shill that's been in the running that actually has a small chance of winning in a LONG time. He's the only non war-mongering choice we have and I don't think his bad outweighs his good, especially when you consider we have been having the same over and over and over and he's been consistently against that for so many years.

[–]PDK01 1 point2 points ago

In 2000? Sure. But once he became a viable candidate, his opinions on pretty much everything changed.

Hell, Jesse Jackson was saying some profoundly truthful stuff in 2008 (?). It is very liberating having no chance to win. I fear even Ron Paul would succumb to this.

[–]JustHere4TheDownVote 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm against a lot of the stuff Ron Paul says and wants to do, but he's a wrench in the mechanical system, he's a big FU to corporate interest collusion with government,

Jesus christ... Why is every Ron Paul support a raving lunatic with a tin foil hat.

[–]sluggdiddy 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes.. those things are a problem.. the wars I am talking about. But what about all the problems that would arise if ron paul was able to do ALL of the things he wants to do. I just can't agree that the good outweighs the bad in regards to ron paul. There is just sooooooooooo much bad its ridiculous, his entire voting history reads like a list of the opposites of how I would vote. Sure, talk about ending the wars, but then you also have to talk about ending social security/medicare, the epa, dept of edu, getting rid of the little finicial regulations we have, allowing discrimination against gays, banning abortion (yes he wants to define a fetus as a person, that makes his point about leaving it to the states moot). Over 60 percent of seniors lived in poverty before social security and medicare, how many people's quality of live has been improved by things like the EPA and other finical regulations. How many people die every year from lack of health care (one of ron paul's long time staffers met this fate), how many minority voters are now given the freedom to use the same things as whites after the civil rights act (bring it up because it goes hand in hand with gays rights and him wanting to allow states to discriminate based on sexual orientation)...etc. I just don't see how/why you claim that his good out weighs the bad.

[–]anxiousalpaca 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You've got to prioritize your issues. If abortion decisions made by states are worse to you than going to war or things like SOPA or the NDAA, then don't vote Ron Paul.

[–]luckyscs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Half the shit Ron Paul wants to do will never make it through the legislature. He will be there vetoing anything he believes is unconstitutional. As much as I disagree with him, I I believe I can predict him, and so I have a strategic advantage that I don't have with Romney or Obama.

[–]kvd171 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uhh Ron Paul thinks the states should decide on abortion (1), he came around to opposing DADT (2), he supports gov't intervention in gay marriage equally with heterosexual marriage (which is to say, none) (3), and has plenty to say about the health care issues facing the country.

What I find problematic is that Paul's views are so far beyond the bureaucratic, self-protecting bullshit Washington proposes as "solutions" that many people pass his ideas up.

Uhh Ron Paul thinks the states should decide on abortion

I don't know how you square that with his having repeatedly introduced legislation to confer at the federal level full legal rights of a human being at the moment of conception.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctity_of_Life_Act

[–]razzertto 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ron Paul's website says explicitly that he will reverse Roe vs Wade and forward a 'sanctity of life' bill.

Any mention of his 'gay marriage' views have been scrubbed. He is pandering to the christian wings right now.

So, uh.. You're wrong?

[–]SynthD 5 points6 points ago

What good is less federal regulation if the states have to do it (because of the same vocal rich minority), and the differences between states can't be good.

[–]lowpass 14 points15 points ago

And you think such basic rights should be decided based on where you live?

Well by at least actually having the option to vote on the subject vs having corrupted officials figure it out for you, I would say definitely rather be able to vote for myself in what my state does...

[–]lowpass 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What state do you live in?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No he doesn't, his Sanctity Of Life Act would have defined 'life' at conception on a federal level and declared abortion murder across America.

And Lowpass's question is good. Why is allowing states to decide on people's rights a good thing? Sometimes the federal government needs to enforce certain things on all the states because it's the right thing to do.

[–]Bing10 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No it doesn't, the Sanctity of Life Act specifically leaves it to the states. Read section 2.b.2.

One can hope on something similar to Obama with that. Obama's religious views are against Stem Cell research, but for best interest he reverted Bush's decision to ban it.

Ron Paul seems the most level headed and for our best interests.

[–]PsyanideInk 1 point2 points ago

Ron Paul takes the right positions on the important issues. In the grand scheme of things, all the issues that you've mentioned are incredibly unimportant, and voting based purely on them is ridiculous. I think being a values voter on the left is no less reprehensible than being a values voter on the right.

Right now the top priorities for U.S. politics are: sound foreign policy, sound fiscal policy, a divorce from corporate politics, and the restoration of constitutional freedoms/easing of domestic security policy. Ron Paul has his head in the right place on all of these issues.

I'm still not convinced his approach to healthcare was the right one. I agree we need massive reform done, but we need to tackle the problem of why is it so expensive in the first place? All he did was change how it was going to be paid for.

[–]tidux 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Blame the Senate for that one. Max Fucking Baucus and the rest of his committee decided that a public option was "off the table," as was negotiating with pharmaceutical companies. Obama avoided Clinton's mistake of writing a bill, handing it to Congress, and saying "pass this." The legislative branch gets all touchy when the executive branch writes laws.

[–]manbrasucks 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Furthermore, they didn't want those on the table because it would make Obama look good; not because it would be bad for the country.

That was pretty much Obama's largest platform. Now my multi-million dollar pre-existing condition is legally entitled to be covered by insurance companies at reasonable rates.

I'm pleased with him.

As long as Ron Paul is the republican candidate I won't be too worried. Obama is fine, in my opinion, but he's not really taken a tough stance on the real problems with the States: corporate malfeasance, constant wars, and the erosion of privacy. Ron Paul is a bit of a nutbar, but he's a smart nutbar, and he's an authentic conservative, not a neo-con like so many others.

Still hoping 'Bamy wins another term.

[–]donteatthecheese 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, of the republican candidates Ron Paul would do the most good. He wouldn't be able to implement his most damaging economic policies anyway without congressional approval. I thought Buddy Roemer would have been great (he went to school for economics) but the media conglomerates didn't let him in the debates. Oh well. I'll probably just vote for Obama as well.

I agree with you, except I think Ron Paul has a (almost) insignificant chance of winning the Republican nomination. The Republican base elects the Republican nominee, and the Republican base is not libertarian.

I wouldn't say by far the worst. I would say slightly more open about their intentions. Democrats are just as corrupt. Obama flipped on a ton of his campaign promises the second he took office. Some would say Obama is more of a war time president than Bush...

[–]Eudaimonics 3 points4 points ago

Most Republicans are moderates though, and are not as crazy as many of the candidates running. There is a reason why Romney won, and that's purely because he is the only big name moderate.

Then again I live in the North where being a Republican generally just means being a fiscal conservative and not a religious nut.
