Pass out halfway though the day and fuck up schedule even more.

My brother does this every time. says he needs to fix sleep schedule (because of big test, big date, big bird on ice) and always falls asleep around 2pm, wakes up at 11pm, stays up all night playing a game or trying to go back to sleep and then is doomed when his 8am wake up call happens.

Reminds me of the time I was in an art gallery in St Petersburg on holiday. Got bored of art, so I learned Cyrillic by comparing the artists' names with their Roman counterparts on the plaques by each piece.

Spent the next two days squinting at random signs and words translating them into Roman.

I just did this... except it worked the next day! Passed out at 11 last night and that was around my target time.

[–]eastrod 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I pulled an all-nighter two days ago, managed to stay up all day, get a good night's sleep and I made it to work for 8am monday but today I woke up to phone call from a buddy at work asking if I was coming in today, I say ya man, what time is it? he tells me it's 11:30 and two of the partners at the firm have been looking for me... so i freak out, call the office manager and apologize for sleeping in, she laughs and says not to worry about it, then I show up after lunch and go see my bosses that were looking for me and they start joking around with me about partying too hard for new years and don't give a shit that I just missed half my work day! I fuckin love my job.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where do you work?

[–]eastrod 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I work at a small engineering office in Canada. As long as we meet our deadlines for project design, our bosses are pretty relaxed about our workday. I'm paid hourly so today I just charged my 4 hours that I worked to the job that I was working on and not a single fuck was given.

[–]Jarv_ 2 points3 points ago

Best thing to do is to do it over like 2-3 days. I've tried so manyy times tho!

[–]beauty_contest 12 points13 points ago

The trick is before you pass out to set an alarm for around 3 hours later. Fall asleep at 1PM, force wake up around 4PM, tired as shit around 8/9/10 pm. Voila

[–]buzziebee 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're neglecting to consider how persuasive I can be at convincing myself to turn off the alarm and sleep instead of getting up.

[–]beauty_contest 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What if it's one of those fancy-schmancy helicopter alarm clocks? Digression; I imagine the most common item to purchase alongside a helicopter alarm clock is a gun of some sort..

[–]Biduleman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used to hide alarm clock all over my room because I know how I can sometimes turn them off and get back to sleep. Well, I did find the alarm and close it and didn't remember a thing about doing it.

[–]DickNigger 12 points13 points ago

[–]Always_Sympathizes 8 points9 points ago*

Wow I feel as if this post is literally speaking about just me. For over a week straight I didn't go to bed until 6 am (vacation - bars and night clubs and new years)

So sunday night I decided to stay up literally all night to fix my sleep schedule.

I have to say I fell asleep pretty early (Last night) and woke up at a decent time so I believe it worked.

[–]SC2Joker 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I go full fucking nocturnal on long breaks. I don't even know how it happens

[–]glenbolake 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's because this doesn't actually work. If you sleep less, your body will always need to make it up. If you actually want to fix your sleep schedule, then you need to go to bed early, then look at the sun and make a big breakfast when you get up.

I remember sugar and soda effecting my tiny body more. By the transitive properties, the amount of caffeine I'd need now would kill me.

There's science in that sentence, but don't ask me where cos I'm far too tired.

[–]Grimes 4 points5 points ago

Rather than caffeine, why not try eating small, highly nutritious foods to make up the difference?

Your body needs sleep, inactivity, and food to burn to retain energy or recharge itself. Caffeine just makes your mind more alert, and for a while you'll ignore how tired you're body is, but after it wears off you'll crash even worse.

Plus, there is a limit to how long caffeine can keep you going by itself.

Whenever I have to pull an all nighter studying I always like texting someone in that class throughout the night. Around 3am when everyone else is a sleep that loneliness begins to set in.

[–]Maraboduus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did it yesterday. Didn't work AT ALL.

the next day I passed out at 12pm and woke up at 4pm and felt super fresh until 4am in the morning. Tried sleeping at 12am ... no.

[–]NULLACCOUNT 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doesn't work. I did this about once a week or once a month for years. Never helped.

The trick is just to wake up at the same time everyday for a few weeks. But that takes time and willpower.

I got about 2 hours sleep last night so I am hopeful I will be tired enough to go to sleep tonight, but given I had all last week off and got used to sleeping until 2pm... I don't know.

[–]ProfessionalGoat 3 points4 points ago

Quickest way to fix sleep schedule:

Only a few hours off (1-3), just set your alarm earlier than you want to and use the magic of willpower.

Else, go out drinking, drink hard and go home "early". Everybody sleeps any time if they're drunk enough.

[–]wipeout4wh 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, stop eating 12-16 hours before the time you want to wake up. Your eating schedule is closely related to your sleep cycle.

I call it a "Factory Reset"

[–]empyreanmax 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've tried this before but it actually just doesn't work. Sleep deficit is an actual thing, and doing this you're just adding on to what you have to make up. The time I tried this I passed out unintentionally around 8 pm, woke up for maybe 15 minutes around 1:30, fell back asleep and still woke up at noon the next day.

tl;dr: Instead of fixing my sleep schedule, I slept 16 hours and woke up at the same time I had been before.

[–]tedrick111 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sleep is screwed up because of what/when you eat and how much time away from people living with you that you require in a day. Here's a quick trick. I won't even tell you when to sleep because it won't matter by the next day:

  1. Don't consume any caffeine that day
  2. Don't eat after 4pm that day.
  3. Set an alarm for the time you want to wake up the following day
  4. Wake up
  5. Immediately eat something simple and gratifying, like a bowl of cereal. If you need caffeine to run (like an office worker or whatever) get that out of the way early. It stays in your system a lot longer than you think it does.

The very next day you'll wake up at the right time. The drive to eat is enough to get almost anyone out of bed. You push your body clock back by eating later in the evening than you should, and caffeine gives you a boost that day, but then screws you over until it's completely out of you (even longer if you get withdrawal) 2 or 3 days later

tl;dr your sleep schedule is a consequence of your eating schedule.

That was yesterday. Took some sleeping pills around 6pm, Drank wine and played warhawk until I crashed, I don't remember what happened after 10pm but I just woke up. Slept like a baby.

Did this yesterday. Stayed up all night and went to bed way early (18:00) because I usually sleep for like 12 hours when I pull an allnighter. Ended up sleeping 7 hours and woke up at 01:00, making it worse than it was before. Well fuck.

I used to work 3rd shift and sometimes I would do this on my days off just so I could see the sun. One day I stayed up and at about 9:30 pm I was called in to go work. I ended up being awake for about 48 hours. That night was actually ok though, I was kind of delirous from the lack of sleep and I was just kind of singing and generally being goofy all night. My coworkers probably thought I was a crazy person.

[–]wipeout4wh 0 points1 point ago*

Fix? No, this is my sleep schedule. I'll stay up all night one night, then the next day (after staying up for a full night and day) I'll end up sleeping all day (usually until 5-6pm) to catch up, which leads to me not being tired that night, so I stay up all night again, and the cycle continues from there. It's a vicious cycle, and it's not easy to get out of. It doesn't help that I'm unemployed and have no responsibilities whatsoever. I feel like I would be able to get up at a normal time if I actually had a reason to.

[–]TerryArchi 0 points1 point ago

I used to do this, but advice I can give is going to bed earlier is the easier route. How one does this is a different matter all by itself. I either exorcise and collapse or take a sleeping pill.

Dude this is funny to me. I just decided, yesterday night, that I was going to do this. Somehow I slept till EIGHT P.M. and decided to power through to get back on school schedule for next week. It's 12:14 and I'm debating whether I can take a nap and have the power to get back up. Good luck meng.

Been constantly waking up at 4PM for the last four days no matter what I try to do to reset my internal clock. Slept for 14 hours on Sunday to Monday passover, when I was aiming for 6 hours. This usually never works the way I hope it does as I end up staying up late the next night as I somehow second wind really late at night and don't crash till 6AM or so the next day and sleep till 4PM again. It has not worked yet. Hoping this time will be different.

I literally actually am doing this. Thanks to this long break and my general laziness I've been waking up at 3-4 every day. I had some hope because I woke up at 1 yesterday and set my alarm for 11 today but...I woke up at 2. So now I'm popping Aderall and pushing through the night. League of Legends marathon will be in order, to keep me wired, maybe some BF3.

I actually managed to do this last night! Woke up at 8pm the day before, stayed up until 9pm yesterday with only a 2 hr nap in between.

But I was so tired I slept until 4pm today wtf. So the cycle begins yet again...

I tried, but failed miserably. It was okey at 3am, at 5am, but at 7am i started to get tired, and fell asleep at 8am. Why was this so much easier before ?

[–]joe935120 0 points1 point ago

I'm in the middle of this right now. I'm used to falling asleep at 7am, and up at 5pm. Now if I sleep now (2:38) I would actually sleep thru the night, and wake up at 6am. I'm debating on if i want to do it. I'm so tired I'm starting to go delirious.

[–]crescentfresh921 0 points1 point ago

I did this after NYE, I stayed up all night at a rave, stayed up all morning talking to friends. Got 1 hour of sleep. Stayed up the rest of the day, fell asleep at 9:30 that night, woke up Monday at 9 or so... ended up taking a 4 hour nap in the middle of the day and didn't get to bed last night until 2 or 3 am.

[–]BeefyStevey 0 points1 point ago

Back in college, I'd occasionally stay up all night, go to sleep around 2 pm, wake up around 10 pm, then stay up 24 hours. Usually worked out pretty well.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i've had insomnia before. not like the bullshit kind kids complain about when they can't go to sleep before 3, i'm talking like the kind where you get maybe 2 or 3 hours of sleep a week, and various doctors have recommended this technique and it's worked for me

[–]StarshipPoopers 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every time that I think I've saved my schedule and get it right for a couple of days, I screw it all up. I got up at 3am today and think I will be able to last until 9 or 10 and set things straight, but time shall tell.

I'd sleep right now if I wasn't expecting important calls.

If you want to fix your sleep schedule: sleep at whatever time, wake up at 7 am, no matter what. Then sleep at 11. This should be easy since you're so fucking tired from waking up at 7.

[–]blueSamurai 0 points1 point ago

As a shift worker that used to finish the last shift of a 12 hour cycle at 6:30am, I'd regularly do this with the aid of an extra large coffee on the drive home. Doing an "all-dayer" meant you got the full 4 days off of your shift cycle - most people sleep through the first day off (the cycle was 4 days on / 4 days off). I did this for 4 years and it led to a series of problems including not being able to sleep at a 'normal' time, 9pm-midnight, once I got off shift.

It got a lot harder to do as I got older. I started shift work at 18 and left that job when I was 22. My job wasn't too mentally or physically taxing - staying up all day on that last shift became a massive struggle and eventually I had to give it up. It'll probably take me another 4 years to correct my sleeping habits without the aid of sedatives.

I'm just adjusting mine a little at a time. I'm working my way from waking up at 7am to 4:30am so I have more hours awake to get things done. So far so good!

What a coincidence. It seems everyone chose today to do it.

I've had a brutal history of attempting this in the past but I must say today it is going remarkably well. 4:00PM and still going strong.

Of course on previous attempts I didn't have reddit or Battlefield 3 to help me out...
