The first time I went skiing, I went to Wolf Creek, Colorado. I was 10 years old, my sister was 8. Well, we had learned the bunny slopes pretty quickly. Our parents told us just to meet them up later for lunch. So my sister and I took the lift up and tried to do a blue slope. Well, we had missed the opening for the start of that trail, because we found ourselves in front of a black diamond. It was called Holy Moses, and it was the only way to get down. We cried the whole way sliding on our butts :(

Commonly called 'trail maps'. Not to be obnoxious, but my example (with the arrows) would be illegal under SOPA. It could put me in jail and shut down Reddit. This is no joke.

[–]turkfeberrary 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you for your correction! Also, yeah, fuck SOPA. That's as witty as I can be right now, I apologize. But srsly. SOPA=Bad.

[–]Mirrormn 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Under what section of SOPA?

The one that allows the Attorney General to blacklist foreign websites that are deemed to be dedicated to copyright infringment? (Title 1 Section 102)

The one that outlines a process to let rights-holders notify US payment and advertising services to stop supporting infringing sites? (Title 1 Section 103)

The one that slightly modifies Section 506(a) of Title 17 of the United States Code to be more specific about works that were not released or not intended to be released in the US? (Title 2 Section 201(a))

The one that slightly modifies Section 2319 of Title 18 of the United States code to include "public performances" as possible infringing works alongside the already-included "copies or phonorecords"? (Title 2 Section 201(b))

I don't see any section of SOPA that deals with what you posted. It's possible that you used copyrighted trail map without permission, thereby violating US copyright law, but then that would already be illegal without SOPA. SOPA would do nothing to change the illegality of the posting that picture, nor would it alter anything about how the government or the rights-holder would deal with you or Reddit.

I hate SOPA too, but I try to limit my hate to things that SOPA would actually do.

[–]Capn_Crusty 3 points4 points ago

Thanks, you certainly know the bill. My feeling is that something currently subject to a DMCA takedown notice, under SOPA, could draw legal penalty and shutdown the hosting provider. Under current law, Imgur (or me) is usually just told to remove the content.

[–]ricketgt 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My feeling is that something currently subject to a DMCA takedown notice, under SOPA, could draw legal penalty and shutdown the hosting provider.

Even though this is probably not how the law is written, the reason so many people are up in arms, is that this is exactly how the law will be enforced.

[–]keiyakins 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's illegal now, you're distributing a derivative work of something someone else holds the copyright to without license.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually that is obnoxious because it's already illegal and SOPA wouldn't change that.

Similar experience here, minus the skis. First time trying a black diamond I actually went into a 'tree well' and was stuck for a few minutes while my friend and a few other skiers/boarders dug me out.

It was probably the saddest way to go down, too. I slid down on my butt (there were moguls...no thanks) picked up a lot of speed bouncing over moguls on my ass, flipped forward off of one of them and flew probably 50 feet in midair until I landed head first in a tree well. Needless to say, I was fucked more than a doe in the rut.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember getting stuck in a tree well. Ate it at medium/high speed, snowballing myself into the well. I was unhurt (odd and fortunate) and the bindings hadn't let go (odd and unfortunate) and I couldn't reach them. My underneath-leg ski tail was buried in the snow with the tip hooked around the far side of the trunk. The other ski tail was buried in the snow with the tip hooked/tangled in the branches. I thought briefly that I might slowly get cold and die there. There was no fucking way I was going to cry out for help. I was too fucking angry.

Eventually, I stopped struggling and lay there listening to people swooshing by until I calmed down and found that last little bit of flexibility I needed to pop my underside binding.

[–]pakattak 33 points34 points ago

Laying down and just listening to the wind and the passing skiiers after you wipe out and get stuck is strangely calming.

When I went on a school ski trip in highschool I got stuck in a tree well. I somehow managed to end up lying on my stomach, face in the snow, with my legs bent up behind me.

My skiis got stuck in some low branches and try as I might, I could not reach the release for my bindings and when I tried to do it with my poles I just couldn't put enough pressure on them.

Eventually some people I had been skiing with came past and undid my bindings so I could get up.

At the end of the trip they gave out awards for all the dumb things we had done throughout the week. I got the "tree hugger" award.

I was at Breckenridge in CO when I was around 17 and they started closing runs to get ready to groom. The only run not blocked was a double black diamond. Being from the midwest, the black diamond at the local hills really were like the green and blue hills in CO. I went for it, not sliding, but jumping from edge to edge... hopefully not wrecking the snow... and made it down for some lunch without dying.

I'm glad I did the double black, but would have never attempted it if I wasn't forced into it.

I would like to briefly recount for you all the story of how I got banned from a mountain.

My first time in Jackson Hole, as a novice skier, a friend and I take what we thought would be the a lift up to a Blue run. However, as we disembark from the lift and start down the slope we realize it is marked double-black. If I was a smart man, I would have simply thrown my skies over my shoulder walked down the hill, but alas, we decided to try to make it down the hill.

Well, I did okay for a while. I even felt a bit cocky at the beginning. But, as I went faster and faster, it got harder and harder to complete turns. Soon I was just snow plowing straight down the hill. I figured, 'fuck it, just fall down', and tossed myself backwards, accidentally landing directly on top of my skies. This neatly converted them into a toboggan, and I rocketed down the hill, cutting off dozens of skiers. Try as I might I could not flip myself over, and proceeded to complete almost the whole double-black run on my back, moguls and all. I finally managed to roll myself into a tumble of limbs and come to a stop as a ski-patrolman side-stops next to me and curtly informs to me leave his mountain, and that I would never be returning.

And that was that.

[–]kurin 13 points14 points ago

Being on ski patrol, you're probably also aware that while black diamonds might often be steep straight shots, double black diamonds tend to feature moguls and trees. It was a funny story, but I doubt a guy could have made it more than 20 feet in toboggan-mode without flipping over and hitting an obstacle.

Hit an ice patch on a black at Heavenly in Tahoe. Slid down the mountain about 150 ft. Skis were off, but no biggie I figured my brother would be able to help me get them. I tried standing up and my leg hurt like shit, so I sat back down. I looked at it and noticed my ski pants had been cut. I investigated further to find there was blood. Looked closer still to find I had a 4 inch long, 1 inch deep laceration behind my knee. A trip to the ER and $14000 later, I have a pretty wicked scar.

At the certainty of sounding like a douchebag, a black diamond in North Carolina is indeed a blue square out west at a place like Jackson Hole or Big Sky, while a double black at some place that is all artificial snow is a blue square out west. Double blacks in places like Big Sky or Whistler often come with the disclaimer that Ski Patrol ain't coming to save your ass, you're own your own. The only double black I've been down out west was just an entry chute onto a single black trail, and it was a 10-15 foot vertical drop onto moguls that transferred you into the trail.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Don't know abut JH or Big Sky but Whistler is a serious, serious mountain and you better know what you're doing on those double blacks

[–]KlimTheSmartCow 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jackson Hole wasn't too bad, Big Sky I think is on par with other wester places. Telluride I've found to label some pretty hard stuff as blue. I think anything in the south east should be blue or below. The biggest wake up call I've had was in europe, Innsbruck, I went down a green slope to warm up, and it took me like 1 hour to get down. I can do just about any single black in the states, and that green kicked my ass.

[–]Magoo2 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly you forgot to account for the metric system in your reading of the sign. It is an understandable mistake.

[–]lucilletwo 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All three have very expert areas on the mountain; when it comes to ranking the hardest stuff on each one it really comes down to that season's accumulation. I've done the Big Couloir at Big Sky as well as Corbet's at Jackson - both were incredibly intense though I did them late in the season when they were on the tamer end of their average difficulty. The initial drop-in for Corbet's Couloir can range from 5-10 feet to up to 20 or so depending on snow accumulation, which makes a huge difference to the difficulty of the slope. Likewise with the Big Couloir, it gets way easier towards the end of the season when the rocks bordering the slope are covered over, effectively widening the trail.

I've only skied Whistler/Blackcomb once, and don't remember the names of the harder bits, though the hardest stuff I encountered there was more mainstream than at either BS or JH. They do a lot of heli there though, which i'm sure is incredible. JH has a great sign dedicated to the difficulty you may encounter.

In any case, its very true that the most challenging mid-atlantic slopes don't hold a candle to the expert terrain of many of the mountains out west. It also takes an insufferable douche to expect that they would, and to complain about it.

edit: I've spent a fair amount of time on these mountains, and seen plenty of all of what that sign complains about (I ski raced for a while and was a racing coach for a bit). Frankly, I don't mind most of it - I love that people of all levels are having fun and challenging themselves. My only complaint is when skiers and snowboarders who decide to attempt the blacks do it in a way that is unsafe and ruins the experience for others. Make regular turns so people overtaking you can anticipate what you're doing (S's not Z's, please), and if you're going to zig zag then at least do it off to the side of a trail rather than traversing it each time. And for god's sake, when you decide to stop for a bit, do it where you're visible (not under a roller or jump) so you don't ruin your day along with someone else's.

[–]trajesty 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you regarding ratings (moved from MI to UT, enough said). However, I am fairly sure that as long as you are on-piste the Ski Patrol is obligated to come save your ass. It's when you go backcountry that you're on your own, and the trail maps all tell you this.

When I last went skiing, I went to the most difficult run on the mountain, unfortunately only a single black diamond. While I waited at the top for my skiing partners, we noticed a kid who appeared to be 4 or 5. We asked him if he was in the right spot and he said he had already done this run. He then took off and I found out that he was one of the best skiiers on the mountain. I ended up running into him multiple times that day on the same run.

TL;DR: Teach your kids to ski before they can walk so they can be praised by strangers on the internet.

That being said, skiers are not much better. Many of them are a bunch of annoying fucks who think that the mountain somehow belongs to them and blame snowboarders for everything that goes wrong.

Top of lift: Snowboarders sitting in the way strapping themselves in

[–]Circecat1 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think I was about 7 the first time my parents took me skiing, and my brother was 5. I was so terrible I managed to fall multiple times on the bunny hill that morning. The incident that my parents found to be hysterically funny occurred, however, while riding the tow rope to the top of the bunny slope. Somehow, when I grabbed the rope, my skis stuck a little in the snow. I was too terrified to let go, so I was dragged off my feet, and got pulled to the top of the hill upside down, ass and feet plowing through the snow.

That afternoon, my parents decided that little brother and I were sufficiently skilled enough to try the green circle slopes. There was just one problem: I was convinced that the ski lift was planning to murder me. No way in hell was I going to use that infernal contraption. However, I was too proud for the bunny slope. Instead, I stubbornly informed my parents, I would WALK up the hill to the top, while wearing my skis. That plan lasted for all of 30 feet, when I fell over and slid back to the bottom.

Now convinced of the necessity of the hellspawn ski lift, I allowed my mom to position me in front of it. I managed to get on the seat all right, and didn't flip a shit on the way up, despite my hatred of heights. Only at the top, where people disembarked, did we hit our next snag. I was too scared to get off. Instead, I froze, with the half-assed intention of riding the lift all the way back down. The lift mechanic stopped the lift, backed it up, and then kindly stopped it again so I could get off. I was utterly humiliated.

Meanwhile, my undersized, scrawny little brother had been managing the slopes like a champ. Clearly, though, fate thought that my parents needed a good jolt of terror in their lives that day. While my mom and I were waiting in line to board the lift again, bro and dad were ahead of us by a fair amount, and got on the lift when it came time for them to do so. I was spacing out, when I noticed a bunch of people start to gasp and point at the lift. There, swinging in midair, was my brother. Somehow, he'd fallen off, and my dad had reacted just in time to grab him by the hood of his coat. He was dangling at least 30 feet above the ground, so it would have seriously ruined his day had my dad not reacted so quickly. Fortunately, bro was little enough that my dad was able to pull him back up. Bro was utterly unfazed.

Oddly enough, my parents didn't take us skiing again for another 5 years.

First day skier that falls without reason here.

I don't always do ice/snow related things, but when I do, I fall on my ass (which makes me feel like a complete bitch.) Thus, I feel that the sign in question is justified in warning others of how dangerous an equilibrium impaired/retarded person like myself can be.

What about the top of the slope where a dozen snowboarders are creating a wall other people have to ski around/tumble over?

[–]nme_ 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My first time skiing was when I was 7. I started on the bunny hills and ended up getting to the "bigger" hill.

On my way up, I was using the tow rope, well, it was rather cold that day and the guy operating the tow rope was pouring himself a cup of coco and was not paying attention to us little kids on the hill. Being thusly cold, my mother bundled me up very well for our outting.

There I am, herp-de-derping up the tow rope making sure that I dont fall, I was watching my skis to make sure I didnt cross them and did not notice that my scarf had come a little undone on one end.

At the end of the tow rope there was a pully that zipped the rope back down to the people at the bottom of the hill. My scarf got caught in it and it picked me right up off the ground and I was lodged inbetween the pully and the rope.

I blacked out due to not enough air... Anyway, I came to with everyone around me and a very sore burn on my neck.

TL;DR - FUCK SKIING, IT ALMOST KILLED ME!

Skiing is one of those sports that causes you to forget how hard it is to get started. Everyone worse than you is ruining your entire fucking day. I mean, what the hell is wrong with them? JUST SKI FUCKHOLES! It's not hard. You quickly slip into a delusion that when you first strapped on skis it was smooth sailing all the way down. Fucking snowboarder strapping in/beginner that has taken a tumble and I have to go around him? Entire holiday is ruined. Fuck it, might as well go back home.

Another is golf. Fuck people that aren't great at golf before they start golfing. My whole weekend is now fucked because I have to wait a few minutes for a chance to play through.

Alternately you can just calm the fuck down and realize that putting that many people on a snowy slope isn't going to be tailored specifically for you. Just enjoy the sun and the snow.

First time i went skiing, took the bunny slope a few times, then decided id try out a blue, after 5 times on that one, and feeling pretty worn out, but ready for one last challenge, i took the easiest looking black diamond at the resort. scared out of my mind the whole way, but i made it with minimal trouble. For a victory run (extremely exhausted by the way) i went back on the blue, stopped paying attention and went right off the trail, off some exposed rock and found myself wrapped around a tree.
