I didn't check out the full thing. I saw that it was a comic strip, but as soon as a very scary frame started animating I closed the tab 0_0 I don't remember whether it has sound.

[–]timewarp 1 point2 points ago

It's some kind of horror comic. It's not in english, and the drawings aren't particularly scary. The scary part is that it's all on one page, so you're scrolling down through it, and at a couple points it takes control of the scrolling and goes down a full page at the time so it looks animated, and it also makes a rather unsettling cracking noise.

more like my bandwidth.

i'm on comcast. i damned near hit that 250gb "excessive usage" line this month. i had to wait until it rolled over tonight to download any demos or new games.

[–]das7002 3 points4 points ago

They'll only say something if you go massively over 250 gb. Provided that it stays under a terabyte or two theyll never say anything. (only people that I know of that ever got a notice were in the 10+ TB range) so you should be perfectly fine.

Also they don't cut you off right away either, theyd sent a letter about it and a few warnings before doing anything (source: Comcast reps)

[–]arachnophilia 2 points3 points ago*

(only people that I know of that ever got a notice were in the 10+ TB range)

what exactly are they doing to get over 10+ TB? that basically breaks down to "constantly streaming at 30 megabit speeds". i kinda understand them wanting to curb that, because that's basically running a high-demand server out of your house.

[–]das7002 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is quite the mystery I do know... In all honesty though they really only added cap there to really get rid of those insanely heavy users.

Torrents, constant seeding of a couple hundred of them. Lots of private sites require you to seed to a certain ratio and that can use up a lot of bandwidth. I make a point to never stop seeding unless I can help it.

Yeah, but it's not enforced. My Shaw limit is 250, but I exceed at least a TB every month, they've never given me grief.

Rogers and Bell has overage charges. Rogers up to +$50 on your bill, and Bell up to $60. Not sure how it is with Shaw though.

[–]dexterium 0 points1 point ago

Yuck, I'm assuming that you don't get Shaw service in your area?

I thought I had it bad since my highest speed in my small town was only 25MBit. There is supposed to be expansion this summer to bring our area 100MBit.

[–]Kleptor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? I'm with Bell and they don't charge overage at all. As a matter fact, the main selling point for Bell over Rogers was that they had absolutely no cap.

Bell, it's 2.5$/gb.

[–]JustHonest 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Be sure to find a hard drive that spins at 7200RPM rather than 5400RPM, It will access the information much faster. Also, do not listen to the people saying that 2TB will make your machine run slow. It will not, and in special cases where it will it will not offer any noticeable change. I hope that clears some stuff up for you!

[–]konawwww -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm aware but thanks, this is still great info for other people.

The only thing I'm waiting for right now is HDD prices to drop... Stock still seems to be struggling a bit in Australia too.

[–]EvilHom3r 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The reason why you shouldn't get 2TB drives right now is not because they're slower, but because they have more platters. The additional platters generate/trap more heat, and makes the drive more likely to fail.

As for the prices, I wouldn't expect them to drop back down for a few months at least.

[–]mackrealtime 0 points1 point ago

Actually, that's not how it works at all. Hard drive size has nothing to do with speed, and even if his new hard drive was significantly slower, it wouldn't impede his performance anyway. Load times might be slightly slower in a most extreme case of hard drive slowness, but with most modern disk drives the difference in speed will be negligible.

[–]snoopythegorilla 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is incorrect. Since HDD's are controlled by a motor and a needle reading data from a platter, there is a proportional relationship between data density and speed of the drive. The needle has to travel less to access the data. Thats why the hitachi deskstar 3Tb is one of the fastest HDD's on the market.

So much bad information.

Hard drive size doesn't affect performance at all. If anything, it actually increases performance because the higher density of data. The heads can read more data in a single sweep.

Here's a review of the Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB drive. It's a 3TB drive with between 5400 RPM and 6000 RPM spindle speed. (WD is not clear on this.) Notice how its sequential read and write speeds exceed that of some of the 10,000 RPM VelicoRaptor drives, and it comes within 10% of the smaller 7200 RPM drives. (Random seek is down, but assuming you keep your drives defragged, that doesn't matter as much for games.)

TL;DR: Size and power management have nothing to do with performance.

Just never put your pc to sleep or hibernate and you should be fine.

What.

Putting your computer to sleep or hibernate won't really affect anything.

Just get something with high RPMs for faster access. Only time it'll be significantly slow is when the computer first starts to access the drives, and gets them rotating, which I assume is what Dr-Farnsworth meant. Other than that, you won't really notice it too much.

FYI having only one partition is a terrible idea

[–]AzureBlu 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because? :P ( I have one 1TB (C:) where both my OS and games are .. )

[–]vertices 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well it's generally a good idea to have a separate partition for the OS only, that way if something bad were to happen (you got a nasty virus for instance) you wouldn't have to backup the entire 1TB of data you would simply format your OS drive (while your games and other stuff stays intact) and install a fresh copy of Windows

[–]Laniius 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was thinking of doing that last time I restored my computer, but as a meganoob I had a thought: If the virus or whatever exists on one partition, what's preventing it from crossing over to the other partition? If you reinstall a copy of windows on your one partition without touching your data, can't any infected files from the data partition re-infect your main drive? I don't know very much about computers, but I think of it as trying to get rid of a bedbug infestation; if you wipe out everything except a small little population hiding under the baseboards, that small population will reinfest the whole house. Is there a similar problem with computer virii and whatever?

[–]vertices 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

what's preventing it from crossing over to the other partition

Well short answer: nothing.
There are many forms of malware and only a small percentage will infect other drives, the others usually go straight for your system files. In order for a virus to survive on your PC it has to either inject itself into some executable or find a way for itself to be ran at system startup (which involves modifying certain parts of your OS). So if you kept the OS on a separate partition, chances are that you'll be able to make all your problems go away by simply formating that partition and re-installing Windows (which means that everything, including the virus and modified system files will be replaced with new uninfected fresh ones). Once you do that, even if the virus did infect some files on your other partitions, it will remain dormant because it won't have a way to start itself.

So let's say you do get infected, you notice that your PC is slowed down, you're getting weird errors or whatever and your anti-virus software isn't helping. You'll want to use your Windows installation CD to format your OS partition (usually C:\). Everything on that partition will be deleted but that won't be a problem because you were smart and kept all the important stuff on another partition (for example D:\).

After you fire up your freshly installed OS, make sure you do not touch anything on the other partitions so that if by some chance the virus did infect any of those files, it won't have a chance to start itself again.

The next thing you want to do is to get a fresh copy of some anti-virus software and do a full scan of other partitions that may have been infected. Once the scan is complete and you're sure nothing else is infected you're finally in the clear.

I hope now you see why this approach might save you from a lot of pain, and believe me there are other things beside malware that may ruin your day if you don't take my advice

[–]Laniius 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok, that makes sense. But if the antivirus software didn't pick up anything initially, why would it after a reformat of the C drive (in this example)?

[–]vertices 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I once had a virus so evil that it actually interfered with my anti virus software making it unable to do its work. Believe me it's a lot easier for your AV to disinfect your infected files if the virus responsible for the infection is not running

[–]omniloathe -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

for one thing, it makes making image backups easier.

p.s while you're not totally wrong (still quite), yours is the kind of logic that leads ot people 'washing their PC with soap' to 'clean viruses'

[–]Laniius 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Haha. No, I'm not that bad. I just don't know much about the inner workings of a computer, especially when it comes to malware. I just applied the logic Of something I somewhat understand to something I don't fully understand, erroneously I know, but whatever. I jus t hope someone explains it properly to me or tries to rather than just downvoting. Oh well.

I didn't realize 3 months ago was "back in the day". The reason why hard drive prices have skyrocketed recently is because of flooding in Thailand which affected several major hard drive manufacturers located there.

Myself, I think I've only spent about 13 bucks. I have a strong aversion to buying things I might not use.

(I bought the Empire: Total War package.)

Same boat here. I set up my 1TB drive for Steam games lower on my priority list, not lucky enough to get the privileged status of SSD residency. Doesn't take long to move them between drives.

It must suck to be needing a new hard drive considering the current shortages. I picked mine up a few months back for cheap.

[–]WC_Dirk_Gently 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

shortages? googles

Holy crap! I bought a WD Black 1tb a few months ago for $70, and now its $250!?

Glad I also bought a WD Green 500gb at the same time I never got around to using. Cost me $40 and they're going for $120?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There is a ton of flooding in thailand at the moment and a ton of factories have had to shut down causing the shortage.

[–]Crimsonbob 0 points1 point ago

[–]Skydragonace 0 points1 point ago

Ya I had to delete some things to make room for my games as well...I don't have a massive steam list, but I bought about 10 games or so throughout this sale (no bundle packs) and had to make some room.

[–]Schmich 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How so? Half the games are tiny in size.

[–]tpill90 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]Gamer_ely 0 points1 point ago

[–]Caleo 0 points1 point ago

More like bandwidth limit during steam sale.

Also, it sucks especially hard now that decent 1TB HDDs are like $150+ atm. I was lowish on space a few months ago (intending to buy a new HDD when I had some spare money), and now that I do they've basically doubled/tripled/quadrupled in price :\

[–]Genericdruid 0 points1 point ago

You know you don't have to install the games, right? I mean, they sit on your account until you decide to install them.

On the other hand, I have a 1500 GB HD so this is not a problem for me.

[–]Lockski 0 points1 point ago

Every time I read about Steam Sale / Black Friday I have to think about women buying clothes / shoes.

"Look, I bought this T-shirt for only $99, it was $99999 a week ago".

OK, I have to agree women can't get T-shirts using Jdownloader.

You guys are blowing my mind with the prices you're talking about. I bought a new, 7800rpm external hard drive a few days before christmas for 250$.

It was 4tb.

This is in the US, mind you, from a Best Buy of all things.

My SSD is solely used for Steam, yet it still is totally full after 6 installed games @ 128 gigs. Is there any way to bypass the need for Steam to need to have all its games in a single directory?

This is why Man made 1+ TB harddrives. The tech industry said, "We must have these! People will need them before they know it!" And lo, people did buy them in droves and the market price for these amazing creations dropped and is surprisingly inexpensive.
