My dad is very into lighthouses and there was an article about this picture in one of the magazines he subscribed to. The keeper stepped out because he heard the helicopter that the photographer was using and was trying to figure out what the hell was going on, only to be greeted with the wave. He later saw the photo and finally put two and two together.

Original picture by Jean Guichard. It's the La Jument lighthouse off Brittany, France. A series of photos were taken in 1989.

From the Wikipedia article: "The lighthouse keepers had been waiting for a rescue helicopter; upon hearing the sound of Guichard's own helicopter, one of them came out to investigate. As the enormous wave broke over the lighthouse, he was able to hastily retreat back inside."

I would really want to know why was rescue helicopter sent? Had it not been smarter to wait until after storm?

That lighthouse has been standing since 1911 so it seems unlikely it would not handle this storm.

My ex's mum had it in her kitchen, and it was in the foyer entrance to my old work, i looked at that picture a lot, occasionally pondering who had it worse, me or the lighthouse keeper. I could relate to it, an isolated figure in a tidal barrage, I got out of both those horrible situations, and I never knew until now it was based on a photo and the dude got rescued. At first it triggered a bit of a negative emotion, syanpses and shit, but then reading how about it, ahhh the ability of art to envoke emotion, and to draw bullshit statements.
