To bring some perspective into this to the folks complaining that things like that are not punished hardly enough in football: Norbert Meier, the guy on the left, was fined 12500€, was barred from his profession as a trainer for three months and therefore lost his job as trainer of a first-league team (and has only had occupations in minor leagues ever since).

There was a story on This American Life about "Flopping" in the NBA (or pretending you got charged and falling to the ground in order to get an offensive foul called on the other team, thus penalizing the other team and turning the ball over to your team.) The gist was that flopping in the NBA has become so prevalent because so many players are coming from Eastern Europe in the past couple decades and bringing the practice of taking a dive which is just a part of the game in soccer.

I remember listening to this and thinking that it was dead on. I don't recall seeing that tactic in the NBA until Vlade Divac started doing it on the Lakers (and moreso on the Kings.) Then it just took off throughout the league.

In fact, the guy bringing up the theory later named Vlade Divac as "Patient Zero."

EDIT: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/415/crybabies

[–]nixonrichard 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I remember when I was a kid watching the NBA, guys would get elbowed, have blood gushing from their nose, and you wouldn't even know it until they escorted him off the court to clot up.

Now if an elbow comes within 6 inches of someone's nose they're on the floorboards.

It's funny, too, because an exaggerated flop in soccer just looks like a guy falling to the ground, but the slick floors and polyester shorts they wear in the NBA mean guys who flop slide across the court on their ass.

[–]reasondoubt 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the nba direction to the refs should be to call these things as technical fouls as they catch them with the right to eject the player in particularly egregious circumstances (game changing circumstance). if after a game the referees have missed one of these fake plays, the league office should review the offense and penalize players in order to get things back to snuff. this crap is so ugly and has no place in sportsmanship.

They don't. The honorability of players is not what makes the sport interesting, though :)

To be fair, I see the reason the player dived when he saw the coach do it. When you're there you know a replay's not gonna save you, and it's unlikely one of the referees happened to be staring at you. If that fucking coach dives and you don't, there's no way you're not seeing a red card.

the fact that you could still identify that particular episode of diving shows how rare it is in the nfl. Diving is epidemic in soccer, with players diving multiple times every game

Why is this so common in soccer?

I'm not a soccer fan at all, I gotta say, but I see these gifs all the time of such OBVIOUSLY fake injuries.

[–]tamuowen 9 points10 points ago

This is the exact spirit he's talking about. It seems to me that soccer has a level of pettiness that isn't found in most major sports.

I'm a fan of the sport and most games are very enjoyable, but every now and then you see something quite despicable.

[–]ShyGuysOnStilts 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you are going to dive repeatedly against a team, and especially if it works, there is really no reason not to take out that player.

They are being "dishonorable" and worse, their continued "injuries" are fucking over your team, so you might was well remove them from play, and rack up one more card.

The issue is the referees suck and diving is reinforced by it's high reward / low-risk in the current environment.

Further, if your team has a reputation of being non-tolerant of bullshit like this, it happens less, and everyone can play nicely.

[–]eleswon 223 points224 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A decent referee would send the player off for such blatant diving.

[–]randomgoat 398 points399 points ago

[–]The_Third_One 69 points70 points ago

[–]HotRodLincoln 24 points25 points ago

Soccer doesn't allow instant replay or replay of any sort. FIFA claims this is so that soccer at every level in every country is the same. If in South Africa most people don't have cameras or screens, they can still play 'real' soccer.

Some contest that this is to make it easier for FIFA to fix games when they need to.

[–]__BlackSheep 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All the fancy big tournaments that are international have the ability to use cameras and screens.

Use them when you can, stop being so afraid of technology.

[–]IchooseYou 91 points92 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is hard, you've got 22 players to keep an eye on, one of them takes a dive 60 yards from you and looks to be in pain its easy to mistake that for an actual injury, referees aren't all seeing gods, they are human.

[–]Racer1 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

American Football has 7 officials on the field at a time.

[–]IchooseYou 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]breakwater 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. While it can slow down the pace of an already stuttering game, it is much more satisfying to see things decided correctly most of the time. But one major exception is that they don't do penalties for review.

[–]__BlackSheep 213 points214 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then get fucking replay.

[–]IchooseYou 68 points69 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]bernkastel87 32 points33 points ago

[–]IchooseYou 53 points54 points ago

I think rolling on the floor as though you're in agony should result in a mandatory substitution, if you're rolling on the floor screaming you aren't fit to continue playing

[–]the_composer 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the solution to the ridiculous diving in soccer, not instant replay.

[–]tamuowen 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It shouldn't be used during the game as it would affect the flow and play of the game substantially. But I think they need to institute post-match video review and punish blatant diving and flopping with bans and fines.

Overall though, soccer is very slow to adapt video replay. However, the Italian league (Serie A) has review and bans for diving.

[–]IchooseYou 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the idea of a 5th official with a tv screen and a direct radio link to the referee should be available, if the ref needs clarity on a situation during the game he can make the choice to contact the 5th officials view, this would only take a few seconds and could avoid incorrect dismissals/ goals, etc. I do think this should only be used rarely and the majority of decisions should be down to the ref. The idea of retrospective punishment should be more frequently used

[–]cymbal_king 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We (I'm a ref, but not a pro ref) don't want to have to stop the game all the time to see a replay. However, at professional matches, there are 3 referees all suited up and sitting in the stadium should the need arise that they replace one on the field. They have radios and can talk with the refs down there. Give them the replay on like a smart phone even and that would solve this issue.

[–]__BlackSheep 110 points111 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because soccer wants to be a "beautiful" sport un touched by the likes of technology. But fuck it, it's boring and ancient. Upgrade your shit, you have the ability to be so much more precise, so stop trying to be so artsy and superior you smug sport.

[–]v0lta_7 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, because soccer does not want to be a stop-and-go sport like American Football or Cricket. The fluidity of the game is essential to this sport.

[–]the_composer 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not that the sport is against modernizing. Have you ever watched American football? The game gets paused at numerous points throughout the game for several minutes at a time to review a play. This isn't so bad in American football because it's very stop-and-go, but in soccer it would completely disrupt the flow of the game. They don't want that.

[–]euyyn 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How would being so much more precise reduce from the "boring" part? It seems to me to be the opposite.

The argument against replays isn't beauty, it's football being not only a sport but also a spectacle. You were tackled in the box and the referee missed it? Too bad; continue playing.

[–]A_Rolling_Baneling 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We would, but Sepp Blatter is a fuckwit and keeps preventing measures to see it and any other form of technology installed.

[–]Santero 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its incredibly harsh to blame refs for not getting every decision right. I remember playing a game and the ref coming to each team before with a spiel along the lines of "every game I have to make around 900 decisions; I'm not going to get them all right, and I can't control whether the ones I get wrong are important or not". Really made me think about what a nightmarish job a ref has - and at my level cheating wasn't really an issue beyond the odd waist-high challenge!

[–]Azrou 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

On the one hand, this is true. On the other hand, look at American football, the refs have to make just as many tough decisions but RARELY do they make the large blunders that you frequently see in soccer.

As someone who watches both sports often, the quality of refereeing is so much higher in football that the gap is really remarkable. In soccer games you see critical game changing decisions either not being called or called incorrectly, like offside goals, handballs, simulation - and not just your run of the mill diving, but in situations where players are booked and penalties awarded.

This not only happens in lower league games but even on the biggest stages like Champions League, Euro Championships, and the World Cup. Look no further than the last WC finals where De Jong kung fu kicks Xabi Alonso in the chest and gets nothing more than a yellow card and a stern talking to. Or you have the US-Slovenia game where the ref disallows a goal for absolutely no reason. He never explained his decision, FIFA doesn't require refs to justify any of their calls.

At the level you played at the ref deserves a break, but when you are talking about top level professional leagues and international tournaments there is no excuse.

[–]jbtoronto 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not hard at all: if a player is injured then he should leave the field. If you can keep playing, you're not injured.

[–]maudmassacre 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

this is the truth. I was a ref for a number of years in my hometown doing various area games, I was a grade 7 ref at the time. It is easy to blame the ref unless you know what it's actually like.

There is a serious flaw in the design of the soccer officiating system, why would you ever have only 3 (spotted 4th) officials watching a field of that size with the number of players that soccer has? The game of soccer is continuously running, no time outs or breaks, it is incredibly taxing on a referee because this is two difficult 45 minute challenges.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but the problem should be obvious as the number of mistakes that get made in even the most popular matches, namely the World Cup. The ref's need help on the pitch, and there must be pays in which it can be provided.

[–]Eist 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea, I think the problem is that the penalty if caught is not harsh enough. If they are caught, then they get a 5 match suspension. See if it happens after that...

[–]HotRodLincoln 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Diving in soccer is only a yellow card. Though there may be the argument to give a card for the dive, and a red card for the 'fight'.

[–]runragged 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Back in 5th or 6th grade, I saw a ref tell my teammate to stay down in order to get a call. He was our "star" player and already knew how to take a dive. Once, he went down and started crying but everyone just ignored him. He started getting up and the ref told him to stay down.

A couple seconds later, another ref gave him the call. I decided then that Soccer, as fun as it was, is a stupid sport.

Upvote. I too would like to see an honest answer to this question from somebody who is in the know.

As a Canadian, I am also largely disconnected from soccer as a whole and really can't begin to describe how much the idea of faking injuries and seeing how much general 'pussery' you can get away with bothers me. It just seems so dishonourable, distasteful etc.. etc..

I'm a massive sports fan and can attest to SOME diving occurring in other sports. However, to give perspective to those who may live in areas where soccer is the main attraction, wrong as it may be, soccer is largely DEFINED by this type of behaviour to many people in North America.

Good question koonat

Yes, there is diving in soccer. However, did you know that diving is actually a punishable offence? It warrants a yellow card (two yellow cards = red card and expulsion). The players get away with it because it is hard for referees to know for sure if the player actually dived.

So, you might say they should bring more technology into the game, like referee instant replays. There are a few arguments against this: There really aren't that many incidents to justify the replays. Like I said, it's not that common place as people might think. Also, it would slow the game down. Why are we spending minutes watching referees decide on an incident when we could just be watching some more football action?

More often than not, players don't so much dive as exagerate their falls. That is to say, they actually are fouled, but decided to put some flair in their fall to push the referee into carding their opponent.

You can be sure, that if the player blatantly dives and actually benefits from his diving, it's not blown away. That player is criticized after the match, by the fans and media.

All I can say to people in North America that might change their minds is actually watch a soccer game. They might seem slow when you compare them to the sports you watch over there, but it makes those moments when a player starts a sprint across the field all the more exciting. Besides, they are amazing displays of tactical and technical prowess, even scoreless games can be very exciting events.

PS: Please don't think it's all individual skill and dribbling, what really does it for me are the collective plays. For example, how fast can you take the ball from the opponent in your half and put it into his net?

Thanks I appreciate the 'insider' response.

The one thing I will say I do disagree with you on is, as somebody who is an obsessive sports fan (football, baseball, hockey, basketball, mma, boxing), I can say confidently say that from what I have seen, it doesn't take a discerning eye to recognize that there is significantly more of this type of behaviour than there is in American sports.

That said, the only time I really watch soccer is during Euro, World Cup, Champions League Finals.

Anyhow, I appreciate the insightful response. thanks

[–]RageDoll 23 points24 points ago

That's also because in the major championships (world cup for example) a card can mean a lot more than in a championship. A red in premiership? Pfft, you're a bad player, come back in 2 games. A red in the world cup? You're an asshole who just cost your whole country a shot at the trophy. Die now.

As a Brit yeah I watch football, but I don't really follow it or say I'm much of a fan. I recognise that there's diving in football but in reality it's a select couple of players that do it badly. Walcott for Arsenal is great at staying on his feet or even continuing when he's been knocked down. Suarez though is a massive cheat or C.Ronaldo who has a gold in Olympic diving... TL;DR: Diving happens, more so in bigger competitions, but it's normally minority groups or individuals.

There are many times more professional soccer teams than there are profession football or basketball players. Did you know that Major League soccer, which is the United State's league, is ranked above 30th in the world? That should give you an indication of the staggering amount of professional soccer leagues there are in the world compared to other sports.

My point is the reason you see more Gifs of people flopping soccer than of any other sports is because there are thousands more soccer games a year than any other professional team sport. It's the most popular sport in the world so obviously there is a lot more of this going on. Last weekend there was some very notable flopping in basketball. However the amount of basketball games last weekend is hundreds less than the amount of soccer games. So obviously the volume of flopping that comes to the public eye is going to be much more titled towards Soccer.

[–]bai_ren 9 points10 points ago

It wouldn't take minutes of stoppage to figure this out. Like all other sports, you have a group of people constantly watching replays and video footage of the game with the power to make a call to the ref on the field. The true reason is that FIFA doesn't like the idea of accountability because I guarantee this small change would curb diving entirely.

[–]OIP 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, and it's fucking important in a sport with low scoring where a penalty or foul awarded can literally decide the game.

[–]euyyn 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's important if what you care the most about is the final result being precise (as in olympic races, etc.). One of the reasons soccer is the favorite sport around the globe is the spectacle component of the game itself, which would be reduced by replays. What soccer fans care most about is our own team winning and our having a blast watching the game.

[–]drock66 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also, very easy to play if you can find something kick-able and round then find a area to play in you can play soccer. other sports like American football and hockey require gear and special items to play that aren't easy to just "make".

[–]TheWix 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

American Football just requires a ball for non-official games. Through my entire childhood we played tackle football with no pads.

It is very similar to Soccer in that for official games (sponsored by a local recreation center) you are required to have shin guards.

Fellow Canadian here. Check out MLS (North America's top-tier soccer league, the equivalent of the NHL or MLB). The players know how much we North Americans hate diving and bullshit fake injuries so these incidents happen far less frequently than in certain European/Latin leagues.

Oh, and a third Canadian team (Montreal) will be joining the league when the next season starts in March.

[–]hazel2020 5 points6 points ago

A lot of practiced plays, and successful ones too, are from stopped play. This means that a foul can actually be advantageous, hence all the dives. Notice that you don't see defenders diving in their own half, it's usually on the opponent's half. The rolling around and excessive drama is due to how play can only be stopped if a player is on the ground. Of course these guys can shrug off an elbow, but the rules say you have to be on the ground for play to be stopped. Finally, a convincing dive means that the other team may get a card and play a man down.

There's just too much incentive to dive. Ideally, cameras should be used to spot the dives and severely punish the team, but FIFA is very resistant to letting technology into the game. Sucks.

[–]kilgore_trout72 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the rules don't say the game can only be stopped if you're on the ground. You can called for a foul for holding a jersey, attempting a trip, etc

[–]Dusk-AF 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This same incentive exists in hockey, yet you almost never see a dive, in fact quite the opposite, you'll see guys just skate off the ice with blood pouring out of their face more often than trying to get the play stopped. Taking a dive in your end after a long play would be a great way to get the shift change you need, but it just doesn't done.

Come to think of it, the difference is, if you act like a bitch in hockey someones just going to punch you in the face.

[–]andy2712 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is true but in soccer you don't have the option to just leave the field. You literally need the play to stop to get stitched up while bleeding. If your foot gets stomped on sure you'll be able to play in a minute but it hurts like hell right after it happens and you can't make an on-the-fly substitution, so naturally you just sit and wait for a whistle.

[–]RogerMcDodger 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because players get away with it and so they continue. The referee is only supposed to deal with issues he sees on the pitch. It is very rare for any punishment after the event due to video evidence. FIFA (the governing body) won't change it because they don't like change - what group of corrupt, crusty, self-serving, old white men does? Unless the finances of football are seriously in danger they don't care.

[–]distantapplause 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Simple answer: soccer is the worst officiated major sport in the world. World Cup final, biggest game in the world every four years: one man is expected to officiate 22 players and non-stop activity, with just two assistants (who are only really looking for offsides anyway). It's extremely easy to con the referee, even at the highest level, because the sport is run by idiot, corrupt 70-year-olds who are allergic to change.

If the referee had recourse to a quick video replay to establish that, yep, that player is a diving scumbag, this nonsense would stop overnight.

[–]djsjjd 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every other major sport has replays. Soccer needs to do it because dives are killing the sport. I like soccer, but can't watch the world cup because the dives are so bad.

Bring out the stretcher, use the magic spray and the guy who was in the throes of death a minute ago is somehow ready to play like nothing happened.

These guys need to learn some NHL work ethic. . .

[–]distantapplause 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well it's still by far the most popular sport in the world, so I'd hardly say it's killing it. But you're right that replays are needed. I don't see why it's a big deal to take a minute to make the right call when years of preparation are at stake.

But it's probably the sport's popularity that holds it back. FIFA are under the impression that controversy is what makes the sport exciting, so they're afraid to tamper with the formula. If they employed football fans rather than ageing bureaucrats, they'd know that we love football in spite of the controversies, not because of them. A refereeing mistake cab ruin your day, week, even year. If FIFA actually liked football, they'd know this.

As a huge soccer fan I hate when I see diving.
Sometimes I give the player the benefit of the doubt; imagine running at your top speed and being thrown off rhythm, it's not too hard to fall, especially if you're running on tired legs. Many players are actually much more honorable and do everything their power to continue, even if they have fallen. Sometimes when you have nothing going for you but to try to grasp at a free kick from a fake dive. I hope this has been informative and I hope you don't consider all players to be "the biggest fucking pussies on the planet", but only the ones that act in this manner.

It's a combination of many factors. There is no instant replay; soccer is actually pretty dangerous and everyone's had debilitating injuries that they've hated so when someone takes a cheap shot at you even if it's not harmful you want to make sure they get called for it (and this makes some people slightly eager to go down); other people exploit these factors either blatantly or from incidental conditioning.

A lot of the time, though, you get legitimately fouled or slightly unfairly disadvantaged, go down, and then don't want to look like a pussy who just fell over so you act like you had an injury that would topple even Superman.

[–]majypoo 2 points3 points ago

Fans and media hate it when anyone cheats in football (soccer), they are hounded and they will have a reputation for cheating the rest of the time in football. Usally you are punished for simulation with a yellow card, however they need to up the punishment after the games. There are teams that do anything to win and take advantage of the tough situations refs are put in. However in the whole game it happens rarely, surrounding the ref seems to be one of the biggest problems at the moment. They should mic up the ref's like they do in Rugby.

[–]Velk 1 point2 points ago

This does not really relate to this picture at all but I will address both. Faked injuries occur in soccer because the penalties are far more critical in soccer. A penalty kick is a game winning opportunity. You would see it much more if the penalty was as critical in other sports. This is also the easiest sport to fake an injury in some ways. Tripping happens all of the time and it's easy to make that look like someone else affected the trip.

Now about THIS picture. This is not even a player ffs. This is a coach it seems. He headbutted the player and then realized how bad it hurts to headbutt someone. The player looked like he was faking it. I can't make heads or tails of it honestly.

"Soccer" fan here. It's different in different countries. I know supporters of my team hate it if one of our players looks like they took a dive, and dish out a lot of "GET UP!" at them.

It's really not tolerated in English football. I remember the 2006 World Cup, after England got knocked out, all the England fans I was watching it with were supporting two of their traditional biggest enemies, Germany and France, over Portugal and Italy. I'm sure it was because the Portuguese and Italians were doing crap like this the whole time, and France and Germany weren't cheating.

i think it started because soccer is on such a huge field that it's hard for the refs to catch everything. So players would exaggerate when they've been fouled to draw attention to it. Eventually some clever chaps figured out you don't even need to be fouled draw the penalty.

The large majority does not dive and never well, that's a very juvenile generalization. Also to the large majority of the US who have never played a real soccer game, a lot of things appear to be dives, when actually it's just one player clipping the other or stumbling a little which causes them to go down. Going down in those instances prevents injury and is often unavoidable.

I'm reminded of an incident which occurred in the last world cup when De Rossi was running and had his heel stepped on by the player on the other team behind him. That fucking hurts and everyone was all up in arms calling it a dive when in reality anyone who has had that happened to them knows that it would be incredibly difficult to keep moving after that happens.

  1. Soccer as seen as a "skill based" game where how strong you are, or how much more faster you are is not important against how skilled you are at soccer. (as opposed to rugby, or American football where physical strength comes more into play) therefore physical or violent interactions are STRICTLY forbidden. This lead to the offense taking advantage of this.

If all types of offensive tackles and fights were allowed it would be filled with 2m muscle heads who can't play soccer brawling it out over a ball (or so the saying goes)

  1. One way to solve this problem is video decisions, but this causes the game to be stopped and interrupted. In soccer the momentum and general player positioning and stamina rationing is important, and pausing takes these elements away.

  2. FIFA is a very old-school type organization who unfortunately falls into the generalization of beaureucratic old-blood who are afraid of change.
