Attitude was the best era for everyone. I wish I could buy DVDs of all shows & PPVs from the era to rewatch it as it happened over a few years.

There are tons of DVD's for that. There's a whole Royal Rumble set from the attitude era. Watching the Royal Rumble with all those awesome guys from the attitude era is amazing.

If its multiple choice and you really know your shit, then finishing early is a good sign. If it's essay questions and you finish first, well, you probably fucked up.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

I disagree about essay questions. When you don't fully understand a topic your more likely going to write as much as possible to cover for your lack of knowledge, if you really know your stuff you can cover everything much more quickly.

[–]Bubblebath_expert 1 point2 points ago

Also, some people don't understand that just because there is half a page of lines doesn't mean you have to write half a page long. Some people write larger. Some people will put it in clumsier phrasings, but that doesn't mean you cannot answer in a few lines. Some people finish sooner because they are better at connecting ideas within a single sentence.

It really depends on the test. In my department essay questions are supposed to be a place to showcase your knowledge of the topics. There isn't a limited space, you have an entire exam booklet (and can get more if you run out of space). The idea is to put down as much relevant information and analysis as you can in the time provided. If you don't know enough about the topics to fill up 2-3 hours of solid writing, then you really don't have a deep understanding of the concepts.

I can understand that being concise works for more specific questions. But I tend to call those "long answer" rather than "essay" questions. Essay questions are mini-essays, and you can ALWAYS write more about a topic given enough time.

Well, even then, it's common to be provided with ten or 20 pages and yet everything you can ever be expected to put in there fits in 2 concise and organised pages.

[–]zublits 0 points1 point ago

I guess. I've never really ran into a situation where I couldn't write more about a topic. It's always the time constraint that limits my essay exams. I consider myself a fairly concise writer.

I forgot essay tests were a thing. For me it's multiple choice or full calculations.

One of my classes last semester had the first written answer questions I've seen in years.

Damn it, I've never been that person. Then again I'm in engineering, so whoever turns their paper first is also usually the person who gives up on the test first.

[–]1wiseguy 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, unless it's a really easy engineering exam, I don't see how you could not use all the available time to double-check your work.

I used to do the easy problems first, and save the hard ones for last. I figured, why run out of time with easy problems left blank. I noticed that some people just worked it from front to back, and I never understood that.

[–]ISS5731 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was in engineering, my teacher would put the easier questions first. I guess he was just being nice.

[–]1wiseguy 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had this process that worked well. These were EE exams.

I would look at the first problem, and if it seemed straightforward, I would solve it, and go on to the next one.

If a problem seemed challenging, i.e. time-consuming, then I would pass and move on to the next one.

When I got to the end, I would generally remember which ones seemed easier, and I would solve them in order of easy-ness.

When I finished all the problems on a page, I would make a mark on the upper corner as a sign that I was done with that page and didn't need to look at it again.

Every so often I would glance at another student's exam, and notice that the last two pages were blank, with 5 minutes left on the clock. I guess part of being good at engineering is planning.

[–]sunnyseas 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do this too. If I finish a problem, I put a small check on the corner. If I can do a problem halfway or if I have no idea as of the moment, I flip to the next problem. Then if I get to the last problem, I flip through my test again and thoroughly think about the problems I skipped, page by page. I usually finish this way, or at least generate enough solutions to merit some partial credit.

This especially works best if my professor is the type to give exams that are designed to be finished by only a very very tiny percentage of the class.

[–]1wiseguy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I never gave any thought to how other students did their exams. That was a long time ago, and it's only in recent years that I have discussed this.

I never looked at an exam with the thought that I wasn't going to finish it, although I suppose sometimes I dropped the ball on a problem or two.

One that I recall was semiconductor physics. Stuff like calculating the gain of a transistor from the physical dimensions and doping levels, etc. I had no clue about the material, and I actually left one or more problems blank. I thought I was screwed.

I got the 2nd highest score in the class. I have decided that semiconductor physics needs to be taught at the graduate level.

Sleeping through class means nothing. Most of the learning is done outside of class.

Class just gives you familiarity.

Whenever someone finishes an exam with 30 mins left I just think "where the fuck do you have to be that you can't take the time to check you're test again?" Smug assholes. I stay till the very last minute triple checking my work every test.

I did that once... and later realized there was another 15 questions on the back of the last page... which I did not answer. FAILED

Learned that lesson... will sit and make sure I answered everything until at least 4-5 others leave before I do.

I was usually the first to finish up on quizzes, tests and exams in my Calc II class this semester, and with me being a whole lot younger and nooby than everyone else taking the course everyone'd thought that I'd be the one person to fail or withdraw, simply because of being a freshman to college in general. Well, that didn't happen : ) Got an A! On the exam and the course, so whoo hoo, no more math courses for me.

I always think those people are stupid and vain. I'm one of the people who finish first, but I triple-check every question, so I stay pretty much until the end of every exam period. 4.0 > leaving first.

[–]ply447 1 point2 points ago

Funny thing is, i would always be the first to finish, and i would always have near perfect scores on the math exams. yet i rarely ever did the work on paper so i was accused of cheating numerous times by said teacher. it got to the point where he started giving me 0's for no reason, and forced me to take tests alone with him watching me the entire time. Needless to say, the prick ate crow when i turned the test in and it was 100, never heard a complaint after that.
