Having had to wrestle dogs for a living, I have often thought about this technique as an option [in an extreme circumstances of course].

What if the dog kills the veterinarian then attacks me, what would I do? I would use my hand to cut off the dog's air supply until it is unconscious. Of course I would not "finish it off" but I would be sure the animal was fully blue before I'd pull my hand out. Why would i be brave enough with a large jaw around my arm? Because I have had to sit quietly while an animal digs its claws or teeth into my arm as the veterinarian finishes injecting the IV anesthetic and/or because after an animal has hurt me I have had to resist the urge to "hit back" so many times that teeth and claws no longer made me have automatic responses. I can think verses panic in situations with dogs and cats at least.

The right and left common carotid arteries supply blood to the head and not the jugular vein which carry blood away from from the head. An occluded jugular wouldn't necessarily cause you/or the bear to pass out.

Another interesting bear story.

Jedediah Smith was a fur trader and trapper in the Rockies during the 1820s and 30s. On his first expedition he was attacked by a bear, and managed to fight it off. Unfortunately, half his face had been torn off. He sewed it back on himself.

I can't understand how a man could bite a grizzly bear's jugular. Bears have hugely thick necks with tons of fur, fat, and muscle. How are our mouths even big enough to get there?

It seems much more likely that stuffing his arm down the bear's throat choked the bear. I know that this is a very successful way to fight off a big dog. Even so, a Grizzly throat must have a huge diameter.
