Yeah it's a shame that good movies like MIB and Matrix never get a sequel. Personally I would also love some Star Wars prequels. They probably could put all the new technology to good use.

[–]real_nice_guy 12 points13 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So I've been watching every episode ever made, on Netlifx, and I've come to the conclusion that when I have children, I am not letting them watch any cartoons made after 2001, Except for Adventure Time.

The cartoons before then were so sharply made, that I would definitely say that cartoons are partially responsible for my upbringing. They had awesome hilarious adult undertones, and they didn't dumb things down for kids.

edit: "lololo you shouldn't have kids, you'd control them too much etc" Clearly I was replying in the heat of the moment, I wouldn't ban my children from watching whatever they want, but I would be like "hey, there's all this awesome stuff from the 90s, check it out. If you want to watch Dora The Explorer, then go right ahead." I do have a strong opinion that isn't entirely biased on my nostalgia for old shows, as I'm totally about Adventure Time, Fairly Odd Parents, and other shows of the sort which were all after my time growing up as a kid.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your kids will be left out from their peers. When I grew up, I had old Disney tapes at my grandma's and my parents houses. I'm talking 1930s Mickey Mouse, WWII era Looney Toons, the New Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, and the Golden Age of Nickolodeon (Rugrats, Are You Afriad of the Dark, Ren and Stimpy, etc.)

Give them the opportunity to watch all of the better stuff from the past, but don't let your personal nostalgia restrict them from enjoying whatever their friends will be watching.

tl;dr--WATCH ALL THE TOONS!

[–]monkiboy 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. Every single kid I know who didn't watch our cartoons are all the biggest SAPs I know.

[–]Blizzaldo 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Plus it's just a sick extra form of control. Why don't you pick the year for your child's musical tastes right now?

[–]real_nice_guy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but...what are you thoughts on Dora the Explorer?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

B-b-b-but.... AVATAR!!! :(

[–]sandwichboy321 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd personally move that cut-off year to 2003. I mean, I loved Invader Zim, Fairly Odd Parents was great until the much later seasons, and even Jimmy Neutron was a favorite of mine. (didn't watch much Cartoon Network after 2001, and only started watching Adult Swim in 2005 so I don't have an opinion on CN shows after then.) I'd say latest cut-off year is 2006. Still some good stuff up until then.

I was 16 back in 1999, and those were all awesome shows. However, don't censor television just for your personal likes and dislikes. Let your kids watch what shows they want to watch.

[–]stevesonaplane 1 point2 points ago

I'm 26 and I still watch cartoons...everyday. I mean children's cartoons, not Adult Swim. I've gone full retard.

[–]Exaskryz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jimmy Neutron is one to let your kids watch. It was educational while still holding fantasy, which I believe helped in my intellectual development and fondness for science.

Slightly unrelated, but Scooby Doo is another to watch, simply for teaching deductive reasoning.

But in seriousness I agree... I'm great at deductive reasoning not sure if it was Scooby Doo or if I was simply born with it....I always pegged the real bad guy right off the bat.

You made adventure time bold. Unless you're including regular show in you "super cool hip shows I'm letting my children watch" category, you should just not show them anything. If its old it's nostalgia, if it's new it's shit.

[–]TubbyCustard 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What a bunch of bullshit. Cartoons didn't start being bad after 2001. I mean fuck, what about Spongebob (good until 06), Billy and Mandy, Foster's Home, Flapjack, Teen Titans, Chowder, The Last fucking Airbender, Symbionic Titan (RIP), Kim Possible, Ed Edd n Eddy, Star Wars: Clone Wars (technically a miniseries), Phineas and Ferb's not bad, and REGULAR SHOW (should have been in bold with AT)? For god's sake, I hate this mentality. Cartoon's aren't shit today, your opinion is shit. This concludes my rant.

[–]real_nice_guy 0 points1 point ago

"I'm right, you're wrong, because fuck you." If your kind of arguing style was in any way influenced by post 2001 cartoons, then it seems my argument has been made for me.

[–]TubbyCustard 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not right because fuck you, I'm right because the shows I listed are good shows, and great for kids. What do you want me to do, give an analysis as to why each one has merit? All I can say is that they were original, the episodes were creative, and there were many endearing and memorable characters spread across them. Their quality speaks for me. My guess is you just didn't watch them.

I remember the first time I finally understood all those "Woodstock --> brain problems" jokes in cartoons.

Wait... no I don't.

You can joke about pretty much anything "adult" in kids' shows and they won't understand it anyway. They should do this more in kids' movies so the parents don't get bored to death.

Nerd glasses

It would've been highly unlikely that Grandpa Phil actually attended Woodstock considering his age. Hey Arnold began in 1996 and it also lists that Grandpa Phil is 81 years old. If we put into consideration that they don't age and it's time locked in the late 90s we can say that Grandpa Phil was in his late 40s when the first Woodstock concert happened in 1969 which is well outside of the age demographic that the concert pulled in.
