Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Actually bicycles are banned in some parts of N. Korea. The government does not like people freely moving around.

Do you know if they are ALLOWED to own their own automobiles, like, the average citizen of North Korea(I'm not talking about the high to elite ranking party members)? I mean, I realize it's unlikely they'd be able to afford one, and I'm guessing that cars produced in North Korea are incredibly shitty, but if they had the money, would they still be banned from owning them?

I ask because that looks like an amazing driving road. You know though, now that I think of it, many former communist countries(Romania for example) have some really incredible driving roads, I'm guessing the dictators who had absolute power and almost always massive amounts of money at their disposal for their own personal use created them for joy riding in their sports cars, or for their very fast Mercedes , and just paid a racing driver or forced a native professional driver to drive them around on their awesome roads.

[–]shitterplug 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you have a reason, you are given one by the government. 'Normal' people do not drive, and are not allowed to buy cars.

[–]ndw10325 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By reason, do you mean like, truck drivers and the like? As in, a reason that explicitly relates to your job?

[–]shitterplug 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, if they are either military or have a courier type job. If they need to travel several miles in a short period of time, they are assigned vehicles. Or if they kiss the right asses.

North Korean money really isn't worth anything, and not used like normal money. It's 'spending money', basically. Anything major is given to them by the government. Even if they saved up enough money, they wouldn't be able to buy a car or house with it.

[–]ndw10325 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I realize they're given everything they need(I'm not going to comment on the famine, you get what I mean), but I don't know why I never really realized that North Korean money basically amounted to nothing, since they have to buy very little.

[–]tinkatiza 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Their work pays for the cars

[–]fuzzyish 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think N Korea was ever able to produce cars.

[–]ndw10325 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I bet they do, I mean, many countries have all sorts of sanctions on the North Koreans, and they don't hesitate to fuck with the west, so having their own car industry would a step in the whole 'self sufficient" direction. They probably got most of their cars from the Soviet Union, now the USSR is gone(don't know if you heard about the collapse of the Soviet Union, happened around 20 years ago, it was on the news), they may get some of them from China, but I bet they do produce some cars that only seem good if you live in North Korea and have no other options, and probably some that even if you do live in North Korea, you realize are shit.

[–]fuzzyish 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think they'd have any interest in providing their people with cars. Plus how are they going to be maintained, how are you going to provide them with enough fuel, etc. If the entire N Korean continent is dark, I don't think they can spare enough energy to fuel a fleet of cars, let alone produce them. They're probably just reserved for the elite few. You're probably right when you say they got most of their cars from the USSR and China, but I don't think they have anything close to what would resemble a car industry.

[–]ndw10325 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sure that they don't have an interest in just giving people cars, but in any society you will have truck drivers, military trucks, couriers, etc. I mean, obviously there is no UPS or FedEx in North Korea, but like, stores for example, somehow or another everything in that store had to come from somewhere.

[–]fuzzyish 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

GREAT LEADER DOES NOT GORGE ON LIGHT POLLUTION LIKE CORRUPT WESTERN HYPOCRISY.

GLORIOUS LEADER HAS INVENTED LIGHT BULB THAT TURNS OFF AUTOMATIC WHEN DARK.

THIS MAKES ULTIMATE LAND NOW RICHEST IN HISTORY.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The glorious DPRK has no need for light bulbs when the triumphant Great Leader can make Mount Paektu glow in the dark as a monument to the people's revolutionary struggle against imperialist incandescent US, just because. The glowing mountain will strike fear into the hearts of capitalistically oppressed peoples around the world and conjure the spirit of the socialist world revolution while a dove and a double rainbow appear over Pyongyang hurr durr herp derp.

TL;DR: DPRK STRONG

I bet the night sky looks fucking beautiful in North Korea.

[–][deleted] 54 points55 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It does. In fact people in North Korea, especially young people, welcome the blanket of darkness at night as it allows them to do things they might not necessarily be able to do during the day under the watchful eye of government party members. It's likely that since the creation of the state, many thousands of dates have taken place at night, in the darkness, under the blanket of stars.

edit: I read this in "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea" by Barbara Demick. It's a fascinating read which really sheds light on the misery and tragedy of life in North Korea under the regime.

It was even more eerie when i was staying in a Pyongyang hotel and the air-raid sirens started blaring followed by a complete blackout, apart from my hotel and the embassies. All the traffic came to an instant stop and all the headlights went out.

There were a few (and i mean 3 that i can remember in a city of ~3million) apartment lights on. A truck with loudspeakers went around to those apartments and yelled at them. Apparently according to our guide (ie minder) the next day they would be named and shamed on state TV for not immediately turning their lights off during the drill.

[–]xoxojlee 3 points4 points ago

Why and how were you in Pyongyang, if you don't mind me asking?

[–]btxtsf 0 points1 point ago

Why? Holiday. I love visiting cities and Pyongyang is a very interesting one. Would have been nice to see more of the scenery / mountains / flora, but you get what you're given with the DPRK tourist bureau. The DMZ was interesting.

How? Flew Beijing to Pyongyang, then overnight train back to Beijing.

When you left your hotel, did you get to see a lot of people in Pyongyang? I've heard the guides don't let foreigners speak to them, but what were they (the citizens) doing? What kind of shops are in Pyongyang? Was it quiet there?

Of course, any other DPRK stories you want to share would be welcomed and appreciated.

[–]btxtsf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

  1. 'See', yes. Stop on the street and chat to? No.

  2. Going about their daily business. Society is completely structured, so most go to work at the same time (there's a communal Pyongyang 'alarm' at 6am, much like a call to prayer in the middle east), have lunch together, etc. Still, many were walking the streets. More often than not, they would watch you intriguingly out of the corner of their eye, but keep on walking and try to act normal. Some would say hello in return. Those with children often love to show them off as most parents do. Young kids are a lot more carefree and wave and smile. The most interesting interactions were at a wedding in the park (quite fancy and elegant) getting our photos taken with the wedding party, the university where students could speak English, and in the hotel with shady characters. Oh also when the guides clearly didn't get the morning briefing of the mass youth military rally in the centre of town and when we came upon it accidentally, although there wasn't much interaction with the bus quickly doing a U-ey.

  3. Not many. The shops we were allowed/supposed to go in were clearly only for foreigners and they were more like museums of items with prices. Any drugs you want by the way. Vancomycin over the counter anyone? I sneaked into a local corner shop on two occasions. Random items, sparse shelves, dreary and freezing cold with no lighting. What a horrible way to live - i'd rather grow my own in a patch. But... beer is plentiful!

  4. Quiet? For a city of 3 million unbelievably so. Something i couldn't work out - the subway is clean, 'Soviet modern', seems efficient, yet is not overly patronised while the decrepit trolleybuses and trams go past packed like a Tokyo subway train with faces pressing on the glass. Price difference perhaps?

[–]buh_dum_cha 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's very fascinating, thank you for being so descriptive. It really helps me paint a picture in my mind. What was the university like? Did the guides try to force propaganda on you, like history that seemed made-up or glorified? Or were they mostly quiet?

I Google Earth'ed that small oval looking island off of South Korea, turns out it's a province of South Korea, Jeju-do. More importantly, looking at a few pictures of the island on Google Earth, I stumbled upon a "sexual theme park" called jeju loveland. Their website, www.jejuloveland.com, says its an 18 and over amusement park, but it also boasts a recreation and play area for minors while the adults enjoy the park. TIL. The pictures on google earth speak for themselves.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

That wouldn't make sense. The main reason to have lights on is because its dark. Most of those lights shown by the satellite image are probably street lights which wouldn't need to be on at night if North Korea has a curfew.

As an amateur astronomer, I came when I saw this.

Also, it must be one of the most environmentally-friendly nations in the world (avoids tomatoes).

Only if the people aren't part of the environment. Oh, and if testing nuclear bombs is environmentally friendly.

EDIT: in -> is

Don't be harsh mate, I intended for my comment to be humorous. :(

Thanks for the video, I haven't seen it before. It is exceptional to me how the one who took this managed to smuggle it out of the country.

They really don't turn out all the lights until quite late. At least 1-2 AM in the bigger cities. (Source: I was there this summer.) Sure, it's probably earlier in the farming towns, but then they probably have less light in the first place and if they have to get up early to start working, why would they need to stay up that late anyway? And it's really nice to sleep in a place that dark, I think.

[–]rarrar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd actually support nighttime darkness policies. Light pollution sucks.

[–]iamjacksprofile 1 point2 points ago

As a amateur stargazer with an expensive Celestron Nexstar series telescope I believe it would be better to support technology to limit light pollution rather than just cutting the juice like Master Blaster running Bartertown.

[–]DukeOfGeek 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Totally off thread if we used LEDs in all our street lighting and billboards would that help this issue or just be the same?

[–]iamjacksprofile 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Doubtful that would do anything about light pollution. One easy solution that would help is covering the tops of all the street lights, not only would it block the light from radiating into the sky but a inner mirrored cover would reflect more light to the street.

[–]rarrar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is probably true. But I really don't think I'd mind just having it off too much, either.

[–]iamjacksprofile 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd support the government shutting the power off every night to the entire country?

[–]rarrar 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd support a democratically-enacted act at least to the extent that it applies to lighting, yes.

There's a lot of good first-hand accounts on the decline of North Korea's infrastructure, as well as life in general, in the book Nothing to Envy. When you can barely keep the power on in your capitol city for a full day, you might be having issues.

I feel really out of the loop. I can find it on a map and everything but I guess I really don't know a lot about the place.

[–]DukeOfGeek 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If someone wrote in a fictitious novel the whole story of what has been done to North Koreans while everyone stood by it would be rejected as outlandish and unbelievable. Think I'm kidding just open the Wiki and read it, but I don't recommend it if you're depressed about the holidays already. You remember that south park episode where the Iraqis shoot down Santa Clause and it's a joke haha? If Santa really flew over NK the norks would let loose with all the radar directed triple A they could get on the phone. Because they know he's Santa. And if he survived the crash they really would torture him, again because they know he is Santa.
