It's actually supposed to be satirical. Marc Jacobs created a lower priced diffusion line, and named it this to make fun of the industry.

It happens in a lot of industries. Lexus vs Toyota. Banana Republic vs Gap vs Old Navy. To me Marc by Marc Jacobs vs Marc Jacobs sell different stuff with different price points. I don't consider their merchandise to be interchangeable.

The super-expensive is celebrity marketing to ultimately sell the regular expensive thing to the public. It's like Business Class verses First Class; the latter exists to make Business Class look reasonably priced!
