It's a technique mountain climbers use to stop unintended falls. If you see a person on your rope fall, you fall to the ground, dig in with your ice axe and crampons so that you act as an anchor.

This is actually correct. It's called "self arrest," and it's a technique used to stop yourself or someone you are belayed to from falling/sliding.

Although it's not a "partner falls to the left, so I jump to the right" scenario, the most harrowing description of -literally- hanging on a rope, is in my opinion found in Touching the Void. It's been filmed, quite well, but I prefer the book. Amazing stuff.

it is true, but in this particular case it would not work.

there is no chance the second climber is going to climb up to the ridge and jump over to the other side before the first one starts pulling him down... especially if the falling one is the one behind, the first one would probably not even notice until he would be falling too. they are not as far apart as they should be and they are not going exactly over the ridge...

in fact, they should not even be tied together if they go over slanted snowy surface (and i think they are not). this way, if one of them falls, he has at least theoretical chance to stop the fall with his ice axe (if he knows the technique) and if not, the second one can at least call for help. groups of climbers tied together in places where they should not be often cause ugly accidents, that could have been easily prevented.

A terrific film!

Quite some time ago (10+ years) there was an incredible live Eiger climb on German/Swiss tv. I think it was a 12 hour programme that showed each and every move of a climber (or two? don't recall) scaling the Eiger north face. "Gripping" (sorry) tv, for sure.

Only if you're a noob. One of the first things that mountaineers learn is to self-arrest: digging your ice ax, knees, elbows, and sometimes face -- really anything but crampons -- into the snow to stop yourself sliding.

The right slope is hard to see, but there's only a small cornice and what appears to be a 40-ish degree slope. The snow up there will be pretty solid from all the wind and easy to stop yourself on.

Disclaimer: For the record, this isn't fool proof. For example, if the ice ax falls out of your hand while you're slipping. Don't just read some fool on the internet and think you can run up the Eiger yourself. Mountains are dangerous. Highly experienced people are killed on them every year.

You could flip over. It's also quite likely that one crampon will stick in first, causing you to spin around.

More important, however, is the risk of injury. Your knees and ax will transfer the stopping force to your strongest joints, the hips and shoulders. Your feet will transfer the stopping force to your ankle and knees. If you stop with crampons, you might tear something and you'll be lucky if you don't at least sprain an ankle. Real-world self-arrests can be a lot more abrupt and involve much higher forces than what you do to training.

Crampons are for use on ice covered in light snow. Think Glaciers. The biggest problem with crampons is that snow accumulates between the spikes rendering them unusable.

They all have ice axes and all appear to be on a rope team. If one person fell they would self-arrest using their axe, so long as they were able to keep their wits and reorient themselves before falling over some cliff or into a crevasse (none of which appear to be very close in this picture) they'd be fine. Additionally, the other members of the rope team would arrest as well, which they likely would be able to do before the slack in the rope got taken up. There's still a risk that somehow everyone could fall at the same time or be taken by surprise and be unable to arrest.
