Probably, and I'm sure the center of the front tire is all worn away. At least mine always were, from all the fucking nasty burnouts I did.

This was the essence of my childhood.

My dad grew up in cedar rapids, Iowa. His parents' house had this big path in their backyard, and part of it was shaped like an oval. We always raced around it, and my ride of choice was the circa 1982 big wheels.

Saddest day of my childhood: outgrowing that beast.

[–]MAC_TRUCK_HITS_BABY -4 points-3 points ago

Why are you being downvoted? I've always been under the impression that children shouldn't work out. Is this untrue?

[–]Achalemoipas 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it is.

It's based on misconceptions and myths. For instance, it's believed that it could stunt growth.

I started weightlifting with my dad when I was 5, I'm 6'5".

[–]herman_gill 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've actually always had a pet theory that resistance training or exercise of any sort during puberty actually might help with growth. It sort of makes sense from a scientific perspective (what with the increased production of testosterone and growth hormone after periods of exercise if your diet is adequate).

[–]ThesaurusFanatic 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you had skipped weightlifting you would be 7 feet tall now.

[–]xtc46 9 points10 points ago

It is untrue. As long as they do it safely, there is nothing wrong with it.

[–]HyperChondriac 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm under the impression that children under a certain age shouldn't weight train. Something about their development getting fucked up...?

[–]RHAINUR 29 points30 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the misconception might stem partly from the fact that using anabolic steroids when you're still growing (pretty much until 20-21 for most people) will cause your growth plates to close due to the rise in estrogen that occurs after a steroid cycle. I should note that this is also speculation in a sense, because there are no studies on this afaik. Just anecdotes. Here is a discussion on the subject.

People have this stupid idea that weight training/working out is bad for kids. All I have to say to them is this: LOOK AT THE FUCKING THIRD WORLD YOU POMPOUS SOFT CITY-DWELLING FUCK. A friend of mine who's 6'7" grew up in rural Kenya, where he had to walk 10+ miles carrying massive jugs filled with water back to his village so that people could cook and drink. Even in the western world, children who grow up on farms carry heavy stuff around, and guess what, their development doesn't get stunted.

Your body wasn't made to sit in front of a desk or sit in an armchair chatting about the latest episode of Jersey Shore. You were a hunter gatherer who was expected to run down animals and kill them or STARVE.

TL;DR: Anyone who thinks weight training hurts kids needs to be introduced to people who've grown up on a farm or in the rural third world.

EDIT: I should add that the reason many people in third world countries aren't muscular is because of poor nutrition. Children who grow up consuming plenty of milk, meat and vegetables will be better off physically than those who're forced to live on grains/rice alone. Unfortunately meat is expensive.

Thanks! Very helpful! Would read again! A++++++ Fast Shipping!

[–]karl-marks 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kids in third countries have stunted growth. Farm kids cain't red gud. Kenyans would be 9ft tall if they could lounge at a pool all day. Children shouldn't be given any responsibility till they are adults, kids thrive on lots of encouraging positive self worth statements that tell them they are perfect just the way they are and things like "math is about having fun working the problem, not about getting right answers". Children are our future after all.

[–]KillerButterfly 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm upvoting you because I think you're joking and you gave me a nice laugh. If you're serious, well...fuck.

[–]karl-marks 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought the math bit followed by children being our future was bleak enough that it would come across as a joke, but I guess not for the downvoters. Actually, I'm glad it was confusing, that means I didn't go overboard with it.

[–]ClampingNomads 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well if you're interested, I'm upvoting you for making me laugh with "children are our future", and because there are far too many eerily positive sanctimonious gymtwats on reddit and I want to redress the balance.

[–]herman_gill 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well if you're interested, I correct pompous idiots on the interwebs who don't value physical fitness and like to laugh at other people's accomplishments (because they themselves are probably weak and pathetic in every facet of their life).

Socrates said it best:

No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. What a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

[–]HyperChondriac 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was right on the fence, because I know lots of people who have those "having fun is the most important thing" belief when it comes to children. 9ft. Kenyans pushed me over into thinking it was all a bunch of shit, though.

Yeah exactly. The bar would weigh nearly 40 pounds plus the weight he has on it. that's a solid effort for his size for an independent dead lift. This also looks like a competition so every lift is above your training weight.

[–]bio-logist 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its just competition. Its no different than getting excited for hitting a homerun or scoring a goal or a touchdown. Celebration is a part of any sport. There is no reason to not show how excited you are after accomplishing something.

[–]herman_gill 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why is it such a bad thing to be proud of your accomplishment that you've been working on for months to achieve, surrounded by your peers?

This isn't some person working out at a gym on a random day, this is during a competition that people train months at a time for. It's not even showboating, it's celebration.

Maybe you've never accomplished anything yourself that you were very proud of, but that kid and plenty of other people have and they celebrated accordingly.

[–]stevo_knevo -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's doing the "air lats" stance the whole way though. Where you exaggerate how far your lats push your arms out and hold your elbows way out from your body. It's obnoxious. It's definitely not the high fives I took issue with it was the "tough guy arms out" stance he has.

That's probably only for people who never lifted. I am fairly laid back and calm, but when I get amped for a deadlift and then pull it off the rush just is a natural reaction. Usually I contain that because I don't want to look douchey but occasionally it just feels great to let it out. Wouldn't judge anyone who does.

[–]amayain 2 points3 points ago

[–]gerbs 14 points15 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I work out at 4-5 a.m. There is one other person in my small gym that works out that early. And he is the quintessential "That guy". Even though we have these, and these, and this, he still has to do curls with this.

And after each set, walks around for a little bit with his hands way out to the sides like his invisible lats won't allow him to stand like a normal human being, and then leans back with his stomach sticking out further than his pecs. Not one of his lifts is bigger than mine, but he's always gotta try and show off.

[–]freudianSLAP 16 points17 points ago

Augh! curl bro's in the fucking squat rack, there's a special hell for those people

[–]gerbs 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Normally, I would not care. Usually if I ask someone to use it for squats or military press, they'll gladly move. But there are 500 other things to use for curls. Why do you slap bagels on the end of the giant bar?

[–]JGailor 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because wide bars work different stabilizing muscles depending on the width of the grip you take.

That may or may not be his reason, but it's a reasonable explanation. For overhand curls I use the barbell in the squatting rack because its easier to take a wide or asymmetrical grip depending on what I'm trying to accomplish.

[–]BerrySlinger 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

why is this a big deal? guy is a douche for using a barbell?

[–]audacian 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most gyms don't have a lot of squat racks so it's valuable space. You can do bicep curls in loads of other places but you can't squat heavy without the squat rack.

[–]lurkerturneduser 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, squat rack shortage doesn't really apply at 4-5am.

[–]PoochDoobie 5 points6 points ago

[–]babyslaughter2 0 points1 point ago

It's gym etiquette; you want to minimize your time on equipment so that other people can use it. Some of these rules are, "don't rest on equipment", and "let others work in".

Except when I want to squats, on the squat rack (the only place in the gym that they can be done), or even an exercise I can't do elsewhere like Military Presses and power cleans (My gym doesn't have bumper plates), I have to wait 20 minutes while he finishes. That's why it's annoying. It doesn't have to do with the bar, it has to do with the fact that the machine is being used incorrectly. Go lift the donuts elsewhere for what I care, just get away from the squat rack with your bicep curls.

I hope you're not paying money for a gym with only one squat rack.

$10 a month. It was the only gym in my area with a squat rack that was open before 4 a.m. I'm not paying $60 a month to work out at Lifetime.

[–]AccidentalPedant 2 points3 points ago

If that's what it takes to convince himself it's worth it to get into the gym at 4 a.m., fine.

Do you tell him is reducing his bicep work out by not isolating when he uses the squat bar?

[–]Sizzleby 11 points12 points ago

Well I agree the people who act like this at the gym are ridiculous and hopelessly looking for some self-reassurance from strangers of their life dedicated to Weight Gain 4000 and Metallica, there is way too many people in this thread bashing the kid. If this guy wants to make a career out of weightlifting, how is that pathetic? He probably has more aspirations in his life than you ever will. Wait 10 years and he may even be in the olympics.

I didn't know reddit was so into ragging on the dreams of a kid, some people need to listen to Carl Sagan...

According to Reddit (as someone already pointed out), anyone with an ounce of muscle is automatically labeled as a dumb douche. Of course, this is outside of /r/fitness and such. I don't get Reddit's hate towards people who actually like to be fit.

I don't get Reddit's hate towards people who actually like to be fit.

That would be because a ton of people on reddit are fat and lazy and don't like when people do things that make them feel bad about themselves. The ones who actually do stuff with their lives don't make stupid comments because they know what it is like to achieve something and are generally secure enough with themselves to not bash a 7 year old.

Hey, I'm unemployed and play video games all day. But I still make time to head to the gym for an hour or two every day and do some lifting. I've gained 10Kg in muscle this year from videogames and lifting.

[–]LatinLover69 2 points3 points ago

1 kg in the fingers from video games alone.

Joking aside, good on you bro.

It really is a case of the worst of the kind ruining it for everyone else. Happens with religion, cities, and apparently fitness too.

And wow shit, when I made that comment, most of that wasn't even there. People really are getting pissy over this.

Speaking as someone who was a competitive bodybuilder I think what reddit hates is gym douchebags. God knows I used to hate them. I still do but I used to, too.

[–]bio-logist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep. I hate gym douchebags too. But, unlike a lot of people on the thread, I have enough self confidence to not dub a 7 year old a douche for deadlifting his body weight.

God, reminds me of this dude who used to go to my gym. He wore bright red spandex shorts and had worked out his entire upper torso but his legs were tiny. Everyone called him, "Spandito Bandito," though he never found this out.

Doing deads and squats is like setting off a system-wide hormonal nuclear bomb; pretty soon that kid won't be able to fit in his Depends.

He's at what looks to be a pro lifting gym, with a bunch of large dudes, and lifted something big, and got excited he was able to do it. You can't hate on him for that, that is WHAT THAT BUILDING IS THERE FOR.

I don't get it, why is this kid to be made fun of? Is it because he's happy with his lifting even though he doesn't lift a lot? Cause that's literally the worst reason to be making fun of someone. Is it his form? Well he's maxing and maybe im not seeing right but isn't he wearing a lifting belt?

I don't get the hate. I think it's great that the little guy is dedicating himself to fitness/any productive activity really and gaining self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment along the way.

If the parent was smart they would at least teach him proper form so he doesn't ruin his back. You're supposed to use your knees and legs. Using your back like that is very damaging.

[–]herman_gill 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a RM and your form is going to suffer on a 1RM attempt, his form wasn't even that terrible for a 1RM.

Also what do you mean use your knees, what does that even mean?

During a deadlift you use your: hamstrings, glutes, lower back (erector spinae) and a few other muscles.

[–]NZFLE 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh shit, I didn't notice that till you comment.

How the fuck do you deadlift with your knees? Seriously.

[–]herman_gill 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't you do your bench presses with your elbow muscles and overhead presses with your wrist muscles?

I know I definitely use my neck for squats.

[–]theblackestbrotha 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shit...you use everything in a Deadlift. At my last comp I had to scratch my final lift bc I pulled my right peck on my second attempt.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't even... How?

[–]Vycid 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you pull one end of the bar off the floor before the other, your upper body will have to compensate.

Good example of what bad form can do, I guess.

[–]thymewizard 10 points11 points ago

Unless you do a Romanian dead lift, in which you hinge entirely at the waist. You keep your back straight and just unbend yourself.

It would have been funny if he , while walking around just the way he did, began smashing things and knocking shit over.

[–]onseth 0 points1 point ago

I saw a quite thinny type of guy with his bro's hanging at the bench press. So he starts huffing and puffing, his bros 'cheering' him. He smashes(yes smash) himself under the barbell and continues huffing and puffing.

I was busy doing my lower back and got curious at how much this guy is benching. So he got done and was really out of breath, I finally got a look at the bar... 50kg's(110 pounds). He went to the sink and threw up...

In my 6 years of hard training, this was a "seriously wtf" moment.
