Marcus Aurelius didn't say this

We need to find the guy who said this so we can still proudly post this fine quote. It's a beauty, but the misattribution drives me nuts.

You can give me credit if you want. I've been saying it for like 10 years now. It was one of the first things my mind came up with when I decided following God was a fruitless endeavor. I promise not to charge usage fees if you follow this same philosophy. :P

It's remarkable how accurately this portrays the Bible, though. I read the quote and accept what has been said as truth. These stories were said to be the word of God, but have an infinitely larger chance of being the word of Joe Smith.

I particularly liked:

Constantly regard the universe as one living being, having one substance and one soul; and observe how all things have reference to one perception, the perception of this one living being; and how all things act with one movement; and how all things are the cooperating causes of all things which exist; observe too the continuous spinning of the thread and the contexture of the web. It's from Marcus Aurelius "Meditations" I believe.

I think this is posted at least once a week...

It's not that Romans didn't believe in god(s). They just had some common fucking sense.

well that's not entirely accurate. in the words of my history professor, they "never met a god they didn't like". They were incredibly supersticious people to be sure, but were kind of equal opportunity employers because they weren't sure which god(s) were right/ they should like.

"If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them"

I'm assuming that by "unjust" he means "you only get into heaven if you worship them". The logical thing to do therefore would be to worship...

I really like that line. I like to replace everything after with 'but unjust' with just 'screw them.'

Actual quote from Meditations of Marcus Aurelius: But to go away from among men, if there are gods, is not a thing to be afraid of, for the gods will not involve thee in evil; but indeed if they do exist, or if they have no concern about human affairs, what is it to me to live in a universe devoid of gods or devoid of Providence? But IN TRUTH THEY DO EXIST, and they do care for human things, and they have put all the means in man's power to enable him not to fall into real evils. (Capitalisations my own)

Many here complain that Christians have an inadequate understanding of the material they base their beliefs upon...

Just say to them "What if you're wrong and Islam is right?".

Whenever somebody asks if I'm wrong, I ask them if an ideology is correct purely because somebody will torture them if they say, "no."

you can credit me, if you want. "boggart777" no big deal. you can also credit me for anything else you want, and i'll swear to god it's true.

In other words, "Even ancient Romans knew that your Gods are fictional."

Well, it is. But if we knew who really said it, it could stop being posted as an Aurelius quote with the predictable follow up of no-its-not!
