I saw an Iraqi kid with a shirt that said "GANGBANG" in huge letters. In hindsight, I should have bought it off him.

I'm Indian and can confirm that this was taken in South India. As WTF and ಠ_ಠ as this is, I highly doubt he meant any offense. The subject isn't as taboo or sensitive as it is here and jokes about Bin Laden and America appear often in movies and songs. It is in bad taste, but he probably doesn't think like that (Proof: My dad saw nothing wrong in buying me a pink umbrella for middle school...). India has been the victim of many many MANY more terrorist attacks in recent years than any western country. Furthermore, even though Indians don't have any affiliations with the attacks, many Indians living abroad have been the victims of continuous racial profiling over this. Indians living in India hardly know or care about the event other than as just another news story from over a decade ago.

[–]aaomalley 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can you explain the pink umbrella thing? I feel that i am missing some deep and important joke.

[–]ithunk 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no pink=girl blue=boy logic in India. Indians love color (and they pioneered dyeing garments with bright colors). Indian men wear colors. We're not limited to shades of grey and brown.

[–]bobbyhead 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for giving context. I didn't think he meant too much or any offense w/ the shirt. I would, however like to know where one can get one of these fine garments?

I live in the South and would wear the hell out of this shirt.

There's a lot of people in developing countries who have NO IDEA of the magnitude and gravity that was 9/11. I was watching a documentary on Afghanistan and they were asking people about the 9/11 attacks. One kid proclaimed he just knew a building was knocked down, a big building, AT LEAST three stories. O_O
When the tallest building you've seen is a two story house, it's hard to wrap your head around a skyscraper crumbling to the ground with thousands of people being killed. It's a shame, really.

[–]dev_bry 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People generally don't care (or don't have to care) about stuff happening halfway around the globe.

So people in developing nations don't care about 9/11. Boo-fucking-hoo. Over a thousand people died in my country last week and I don't see people like you caring.

[–]midas22 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe 3.000 dead people in a far away country fades a little bit in comparison to hundreds of thousands or even millions of people dying of poverty and starvation where you actually live. I don't know, it's just a guess.

[–]WaltTheGambler 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have to log in because everyone in here sounds like ignorant american patriots and we need a little more variety.

  1. Do you know how many random clothes just get dumped in Africa? (not literally, as in a garbage dump, just all of this unused and old material) So really, it's likely he is wearing this shirt because it couldn't sell elsewhere and so he could get it for cheap.

  2. Maybe he's wearing it and knows what it's portraying, but doesn't know a whole lot about what went down, or even if it actually happened. I mean, how dare he not be up to date with American politics! Everyone else is!

  3. Maybe he knows full well it happened, is glad it happened, and laughs at his shirt all day. Has anyone ever stopped to consider that maybe us great, oh so wonderful developed nations are not viewed so by the rest of the world? My thoughts have delved far enough to consider that we actually are the bad guys, and you really can't even begin to comprehend that nations oppressed by the developed world for centuries might have a bit of a beef?

  4. Tying in with the last, this isn't a shirt with dying bodies lieing all over the place. It's showing the towers, a symbol of American power. If anyone's getting joy out of these shirts or their message, it's far more likely an issue with the nation than it is people rejoicing that other people were needlessly killed.

  5. I could go on, but I think I've spent too much time on this already

tl;dr// Ok, be offended, but jump outside your bubble for a second this is ridiculous

Ooh, Communist state!

Interesting story: In the bay area (San Francisco), I'm out on a smoke-break and talking to the Filipino security guard of our tech building. He tells me that he recently read about the state of "Keraaala" in India where a lot of nurses come from. I told him yea, its also the state with 100% literacy and a communist government, and then I saw him go totally confused. He says "how can that be. I thought India was a democracy".

I guess people who've only lived in countries with a 2 party system dont understand how even communist parties can exist under a democracy.

Jump outside of your bubble?? Give me an example of an equivalent event as this one that would be appropriate on a shirt. Bet you can't. You are too apologetic for your own good.

[–]Torch_Salesman 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, that's a matter of societal values. You can't find an equivalent event because of the importance that you assign to 9/11, and terrorist attacks in general. I'm not saying that 9/11 isn't a terrible event, or that I agree with what he was saying, just that your response isn't really fair. If you were in a completely different country, with a correspondingly different morality, it would definitely be possible to give an example of an equivalent event that would be appropriate for a shirt. But you're not, and neither am I, so that's not a question we can properly answer.

Edit: fixed grammar.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ummm...that guy doesn't look African.

[–]spitterofspit 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First off, how do you know this is Africa? This man is of Indian descent and the poster in the back depicts several Indian men...In any case, tell us how many random clothes get dumped in Africa because apparently this is a well established fact somewhere.

It is quite possible that he doesn't know, but it is very unlikely. Even "third-world" people have the ability to conversate and the events that occurred are well known to even those without a full knowledge of American politics.

Further, I agree that American foreign policy is a justifiable reason for a person to hate American's considering the death toll across a number of nations at the hands of perceived American imperialism, but the wider point is that a person whom actually takes delight in the deaths a lot of people is just plain wrong, uninformed, and sad.

Finally, the message may be construed as merely a symbol of the destruction of American power, but again, this person likely understands that this resulted in the deaths of many people...the fact is that they are rejoicing in death.

It's a good exercise to point out American ignorance in regards to the rest of the world, but in doing so, indicated your own ignorance. I agree that it's important to not automatically assume that this is not a bad person, but your mitigating reasons are that this person is either an idiot, a poor ignorant third worlder, or a hateful bastard. Any one of these choices is a good reason to cause derision. That being said, if this was a picture of an American wearing a shirt depicting a predator drone bombing a peaceful village in Pakistan or Afghanistan, the reasons for hating the picture would be the same.

[–]spitterofspit 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That being said, I think you've omitted one possible scenario. That this man is fully aware of these events and fully opposes the actions that led to the deaths of many people; maybe he is wearing the shirt so that the he and the rest of the world "do not forget"...

[–]IamReek 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah I'm sorry I can't seem to get out of my "This guy is celebrating mass murder" bubble. My sincerest apologies.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I understand where you are coming from, I think you may be missing the reasoning behind why many of us are offended by this shirt. Most of us aren't offended because "he hates America", but because someone made a shirt depicting a violent act in which thousands of people died. You very well may be correct in your first two bullet points, which is why what really bothers me is the fact that this shirt even exists in the first place. I think it's sad that ANYONE would support or mock the death of innocent civilians in any place in the world. I am just as offended when I hear Americans joking about starving children in Africa, tsunami and earth quake victims, Holocaust victims, civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. I know many people will tell me to lighten up, but as someone who is involved with global health and health care I think one of the worst things we can do is dehumanize other people/cultures in order to "lighten up". Unfortunately, though, we all do it. Not just Americans, but everyone, because it's easy to do when you are raised your entire life in a particular culture and taught to believe certain things.

This brings up your third point. I think that a lot of Americans are fully aware that we aren't the "good guys"; particularly Americans on Reddit. All you have to do is ignore the popular media and actually pay attention to the occupy movement as well as approach people in cities and college campuses to find this sentiment.

Also, while your fourth point may be correct, it also may be false. It actually makes me think of the Confederate flag. Many people fly the flag as a symbol of Southern pride, but ultimately to a lot of people it signifies a time period and culture of inequality and hatred. Therefore, even though the people flying it MAY not be flying it to represent hatred and white pride, because others construe it as hateful it is still offensive and morally shouldn't be flown in public places (note I said morally, not legally. Legally you should be able to wear/say/fly whatever you want no matter how offensive). While that is not the best metaphor, it still explains why this shirt is offensive even if the man wearing it is actually depicting the loss of what he considers to be American hegemony as opposed to killing Americans.

I just don't see how being offended by something like this makes one an ignorant American patriot. People were murdered, and the t-shirt is depicting this horrific event. That is offensive. It's offensive when it happens anywhere, and to celebrate the death of civilians (despite whether you agree with their country's political agenda or culture) is extremely sad to me. This guy may not know what this shirt means, but clearly the person who made it did. Therefore, I don't see how this SHIRT is not offensive.

Edit: TL;DR Many of us are offended because the shirt depicts a murder scene in which thousands of innocent civilians were killed. I am just as offended when I similar memes/shirts/jokes about similar incidents that occurred in other countries (even if the US was to blame).

So kind of like this as featured on thisiswhyimbroke.com. I'm not saying the shirt is classy but it is not the first time or the last time someone makes/does/says something offensive. And on top of that, we cannot pass judgement on this man for wearing this shirt without knowing why he put it on this morning. For all we know, his house burned down this morning, and he found this on the ground, and he's smiling because he's happy to be wearing clothes.

EDIT: It's my cake day, and I didn't even notice. :( Now it will pass without me posting pictures of my non-existent pets.

[We are offended] because someone made a shirt depicting a violent act in which thousands of people died

Relevant

[–]diggstown 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is a picture of a person, not an act of violence.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I certainly understand where you are coming from, but I said depicting a violent ACT in which thousands of people died. While many feel Che committed some pretty heinous crimes against humanity, the Che shirt depicts a person, so I am not sure if I can compare the two. I am not saying you do not have a point here, I am just saying that the Che shirt would probably be a completely different conversation.

[–]RikF 72 points73 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And I'd like seeing you wear a pro US shirt in a Pakistani border town that had recently lost a wedding party to a US drone attack.

Is this offensive to us? Absolutely. Might its cultural relevance be lost in another country? Yup. Might it be seen as an attack on a country that this individual has wronged him? Yes, it really might.

[–]Aint_got_no_agua 74 points75 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wearing a pro US shirt wouldn't really be equivalent. Equivalent would be wearing a shirt with the picture of their wedding party getting blown up by a drone.

Who the fuck cares about the guy wearing it, what about the people who made it?

Seriously? I mean, I do not understand. But obviously there is a market for it. SO, lets start our own clothing line. I have some slogans ready:

I FUCKED YOUR DOG AND HE HATED IT

When i look into your eyes, all i can think of is ANALLY RAPING YOU.

IS your grandfather dead? GOOD I WANT TO FUCK HIM.

My entire family died of hunger and all i got was this lousy t-shirt!

I DONT WIPE MY ASS. EVER. I LET IT HARDEN LIKE CAKE FROSTING. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT?

Those are all excellent ideas for t-shirts. Now i need some savvy venture capitalists to invest in me.

Too late. One of the largest US t-shirt stores: www.tshirthell.com.

With such classics as:

  • IS IT PEDOPHILIA IF THE KID IS DEAD?

  • KOBE IS INNOCENT - I RAPED THAT BITCH

  • SLAVERY GETS SHIT DONE

I'm an American. What happened that day was terrible. But the way we reacted to it and let it affect us for the last ten years is fucking pathetic. We're like every teenager that has an accident and then milks it for all its worth so we can garner pity from others and excuse ourselves from having to move on.

[–]lordskelzor 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FYI: not only was it NOT the worst act of terrorism ever but you actually GOT the guy who "did it" along with his country and the several countries around it.

What the fuck needs to be done to make you guys happy?

[–]rmm45177 9 points10 points ago

You Americans need some perspective, there are thousands of innocent people dying RIGHT NOW and you don't give a fuck (and a few hundred of those people are being EXECUTED by YOUR TROOPS), but you see a pic of a guy in a shirt with NO CONTEXT and y'all get huffy and bootybothered like it's going out of style.

[–]Bear_Masta 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just because it wasn't the worst thing ever doesn't mean it wasn't a terrible thing. Stalin killed more people than Hitler, does that mean people should just forget about the Holocaust?

No, but more people should know about the people Stalin killed in the first place.
