If people are actually using the barefoot running shoes to run, then I don't see how that is a bad thing... it does apparently lessen the risk of injury.

I have some and they are great for water sports too.

Nike started the running craze by inventing a shoe that causes heel strikes. This lengthened the runners stride making them run faster.

and a whole new medical field was created dealing with foot injury.

While I have a pair myself, I definitely won't be wearing them to work any time soon.

[–]LagrangePt 1 point2 points ago

I wear mine to work every day... but they're pretty tame color wise.

[–]kangaroo2 5 points6 points ago

They aren't just for running. I have a lower back injury and wearing barefoot shoes has significantly improved my ability to walk, and reduced the number of days that I am unable to move around. They are the best shoes that I have found, and I wear them everywhere but work.

[–]tw0bears 1 point2 points ago

My fiance just wore a hole through her KSO's as well. I feel like we've done the same amount of running too. Maybe the Bakilas were made better?

[–]dhoshino 1 point2 points ago

[–]foxfirewisp 22 points23 points ago

I love mine. They are great for strengthening all the stabilizing muscles and ligaments in your legs that don't get used with regular shoes. You're sore for the first 2 weeks and then it's smooth sailing.

[–]tw0bears 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those first 2 weeks are no joke. I remember being surprised at how sore I was.

[–]noirthesable 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? I'd been contemplating getting a pair recently...
Until I stepped on an old rusted nail while on a walk. It went clean through the sole of my trainers, and you could see a slight indentation on the bottom. A few inches to the north, and I'd be getting my Tetanus jabs renewed just in case.
How do they deal with this sort of thing associated with accidents while on a walk. (nails, glass, toe-stubs. Etc)?

[–]Nirvanablue92 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The beautiful thing is that you become much more aware of where your feet are at all times.

[–]AdonisChrist 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it does. Somehow people have gotten this idea that their feet don't work properly or something and so think we need shoes.

What a dumb idea.

[–]cathmore 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What if I have flat feet and overpronate?

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you run, and you have flat feet/overpronation issues then running barefoot can help. I am not saying switch instantly to 100% barefoot running tomorrow, but adding barefoot/minimal shoe running to your workout routine will lead to stronger muscles in your feet/ankles. Strengthening your muscles and working on your barefoot running form will improve your conditions even in instances where you are running in traditional footwear.

I love mine for hiking. I don't have very good balance and I used to roll my ankle all the time when I hiked. I had sturdy above-the-ankle hiking shoes but they didn't really help.

My vibrams allow me to feel the ground I'm walking on, no injuries or falls since!

Not sure what's wrong with that. They're like wearing bare feet, without the pain.

[–]Rentun 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Eh, for me the pain is half the reason for even cutting off other peoples' feet and wearing them in the first place.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Need to wear them to break them in and so your feet can adjust from your typical running shoes. It's heavily advised you walk in them before using them to run.

[–]klafka 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

they are great for your back even when not running with them.

[–]dangersandwich 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think this is a good thing. Humans evolved over thousands of years without modern footwear, so going back to a "natural" state of walking and running is, IMO, a good thing. What isn't good is that most people are ignorant of this fact and wear barefoot shoes for fashion or trend purposes rather than for the biomechanical benefits.

[–]MalcolmReynoldsWrap 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love them, but I use them to sneak about. Very easy to stay dead silent with them.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have flat feet. I can attest that barefoot is substantially more comfortable than wearing shoes and only slightly more comfortable than hard-sole orthotic supports. Even just walking around, if I didn't wear shoes with specific arch-support, I'd have knee pains every time a storm kicked up (barometric pressure or some shit). Between wearing near barefoot shoes and shoes with arch-support, I never have knee pains aside from when I hit them on something.

[–]mattstreet 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wearing them casually is still good for your feet and legs, the reason you have to start off so slow when you switch to minimalist running is because you've spent most of your life wearing shoes everywhere.

Some people might not be that into running but still want to have naturally strong feet that haven't been pampered into weakness by their shoes.

[–]FreeSammiches 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wear them 7 days a week. I have wide feet and shoes have always hurt. I've been wearing vibrims for a solid year now and all my feet and calf pain problems have cleared. Besides that, my large toenails have finally stopped growing in wrong.

[–]erotic_octopus 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just curious -- do shoes like this reduce pain/strain in arches after long walks and the like?

Reddit might have convinced me to look into new hiking shoes.

[–]FreeSammiches 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There will be an adjustment period of a week or three depending on the person. This is because there are some muscles down there that get used differently or not at all with regular shoes.

For me, after that adjustment period passed I had a lot less pain no matter what activity I was doing - except for maybe walking on rocks which took a bit longer to get used to.

I wonder if they'd make those like the KSOs. While they stay on better than any other water shoes I've had, they still slip a good bit and can come off in serious muck.

[–]Akselmusic 1 point2 points ago

Are you sure you are sized right? Even my Classics usually stay on fine even in mud and they are totally open on top.

[–]exzyle2k 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As someone who used to work for Crocs, they would not produce these. Their whole thing was making sure you were stepping on Croslite (the foam rubber material), and not some bastardized halfbreed like this.

Now, would they ever put out a "five finger" design like this? Possibly. Would it fit their whole shift away from shit that looks great on a kid but goofier than hell on an adult? No.

[–]holy_shitsnacks 13 points14 points ago

I love mine. I have a few pair of the Beach shoes, the flagship model with all the holes in them. Other than that, unless I tell you they're Crocs you would have no idea.

It's a shame they made the shift way too late. They might have saved themselves from losing 99% of their stock value around October 07.

I haven't worn them myself, but I have a couple friends who have. I don't know if you're suppose to wash them (maybe probably) but they didn't and those fuckers smelled like an old diaper wrapped around road kill.

[–]mindglitch 1 point2 points ago

They get tossed into the washing machine on warm with a bunch of towels.

[–]suchandsuch 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way I see it,

  • there are those that wear them to be trendy,
  • those that wear them to NOT be trendy (but are mistaken)
  • those that wear them for the immense benefits during sports
  • and then those that laugh at the other 3 groups, regardless of benefits or trend/nontrend points. (even though they're probably missing out on something kind of cool)

[–]Forty_Cakes 7 points8 points ago

Don't forget people who wear them because they're comfortable as fuck.

[–]execute85 2 points3 points ago

No one wears these to be trendy. They cost $100 and don't look cool. People wear them because they run or like how comfortable they are.

There is only one reason why dipshits try to say stuff like "those are the new crocs right?"

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

[–]nostalgicBadger 21 points22 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't see a problem with toe shoes, except that they have to be worn with toe socks, which I doubt most guys are willing to buy, so I'm guessing their shoes get pretty gross. But I picked up a pair for free running, and they've vastly improved my agility and balance.

That being said, they're a utility shoe, not a fashion shoe. This thing in the original post? I'm not sure why that exists.

Edit: Never thought to throw mine in the wash, but I guess they'd hold up fine, so all right.

[–]TheFrankTrain 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can throw Vibram's in the washing machine, and they dry out fast enough to wear them the next day in my experience.

Vibrams are simply amazing - after getting patellar tendonititis due to running incorrectly, my doctor ended up suggesting a basic pair of KSO's to wear.

As said before, shin splints will come if you go hardcore into them. I loved the shoes, wore them every day because my feet felt so much better than in cross-trainers, but I ended up getting some super shin splints and sore muscles for the first couple weeks I wore them. Also, if you were like me, I had shallow arches, and Vibrams ended up helping me build some arches - it was painful, but man, its weird looking at what I use to wear now...

Its been about a year since I started wearing them, and I have not been able to put any other shoes on with them feeling like they are impacting my knees - the zero-degree impact makes ALL the difference. I tried my other cross trainers on recently, and after about an hour of just walking in them, I felt like a retard. You learn to walk correctly over time, taking more shallow steps and those stupid cross trainers did not feel like my bare feet.

Studies prove what I felt - they showed that your body naturally wants to be as close to the ground as possible, you know, that sense of being grounded. Your foot has a very sensitive sensory system, which relays what we are standing on to our brain, so the sense of being grounded and feeling what we are stepping on makes our bodies feel better and build a better sense of balance.

I forget where the study was, but I remember seeing it in a fitness article, and they had hooked a bunch of old people up to sensory boards, where they measure the amount of pressure exerted by the body to what they are standing on, and they found that the "orthopedic" shoes that some old people are told to wear actually cause heavier steps. When another set of old people were trained to walk correctly with Vibrams, it was shown that they exerted almost 40% less pressure. When you are old, that can make the difference between pain and no pain while walking.

In short, Vibrams have saved my knees, and no other shoe I have worn can get close to the natural feel I get every day. If I am not using my Vibrams, I am running barefoot.

Why fix what we were given? We tried "fixing" shoes with all these inventions, like curved tips (to replace the power that our toes usually give) to padded heels.

Head on over to r/fitness and ask what they think about simulated barefoot running. You'll get all the citations you need.

The only way this could be better is if it came with ugg uppers and permanently attached black tights and a northface jacket.

I don't understand people's deal with the barefoot running shoes. I have been running for years and they have saved my knees from some serious soft tissue injuries I got from playing soccer in middle school. Could care less about their "trendiness" they are a life-saver.

I never got a pair of vff's to fit me right. They were either digging in between my toes or too loose.

I bought some huaraches from invisible shoe with their 4mm proprietary rubber soles. They are a little floppy on my huge feet, but they feel absolutely barefoot and don't try to force my toes or feet to conform to any predetermined shape.

[–]tobiasx 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Takes a little while for VFFs to break in, they get returned often because of this.

warning: may cause shin splints.

[–]khakimage 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You do need to ease in to wearing them. The pair I bought actually came with a warning about this, and I dismissed it, figuring it was just for the crazy hardcore athletes who would go out and run a marathon the first time they wore them. I mean, I was just running a mile each morning with my dog, can't be too stressful, right?

I got shin splints so bad I could barely walk for a week afterward. Then I eased in to running with them over the course of a couple of weeks, and I've never had problems with them since.

It's funny how when you get an injury wearing traditional shoes it's the shoe's fault, but when you get an injury wearing barefoot shoes it's your fault.

[–]khakimage 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Running the barefoot way exercises muscles that you don't use when running with a heel-first strike. Over-exerting any atrophied muscle will cause an injury. But on the flipside, once all those muscles around your ankle are getting a workout, you'll never roll your ankle again. Or at least I haven't, in two years of running in those shoes.

[–]Cheddarwurst 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Now all you can do is roll your whole body. Which is much rarer, yet much more catastrophic.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

It's funny how when you get an injury wearing traditional shoes it's the shoe's fault, but when you get an injury wearing barefoot shoes it's your fault.

It's funny how when you get an injury when wearing traditional shoes, you just chalk it up to being part of the sport, but when you get an injury while running barefoot, it's proof that running barefoot is bad for you.

[–]Nirvanablue92 2 points3 points ago

shin splints is from wearing shoes. people don't get them when they run barefoot unless they go from wearing shoes to going barefoot without the proper ramp up.
