I see you are quite oblivious to sarcasms. I am sorry if I didn't make it obvious enough for you. Sarcastic response to a satire? Inconceivable!

And if you cared to read my posting history, you should ALSO check for the context of the massage, which was also a sarcasm. And if you went further to read most of my comments, I would hope most people would find me a strong believer of Christian faith and generally have pet peeve about the fact that most of Reddit is quite hostile to Christian faith.

Sadly, this is incredibly close to the kind of things that people in churches tell kids about Atheists.

[–]alfx 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i was raised catholic, and while i'm not one anymore (though long after i stopped being a catholic, i took a lot of religion and philosophy classes anyway and continued to learn about theology), i very much disagree with you. they do not do that at all, at least in my experience. it was all very stupid nonetheless, though i think a lot of atheist wackos lie just much as religious wackos.

i've met some very religious people who i think are total shitheads. and i've met some i would trust with my life.

i've also met many atheists i would trust with my life, and many who are straight up shitheads as well.

i think we'd all be a lot better off if we just let other people be and not care about if they want to believe in a religion or not.

[–]Shakes6th 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with you, but from my experience (being raised Lutheran) this is the kind of shit that was shoved down my throat all the time. Every Sunday I would get a lecture on why being an Atheist would get me a one way ticket to hell and that my Lutheran church was the only true church because of some stupid communion rule we have or something.

I guess the church I grew up with was somewhat extreme, but a lot of churches around where I live also teach the same thing and are even more extreme than that.

Although there is tons of people around where I live who are much better people than the religious extremist, there are plenty of churches in my area that shove shit like this down people's throats.

I should have said something about, "in my experience".

[–]alfx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

oh ahha, yeah i'm sorry. lutherians are.. a bit more "extreme" than most christians (from what i hear)

Since this is satire, I believe you are in the wrong subreddit.

So many times someone posts another of these "Look at those crazy Christians" pics, and they almost always turn out to be satire.

Poe's law is bullshit, atheists manufacture far more bizarre accusations on Christians, ostensibly for humor purposes, that Christians actually do, then someone claims that they are real, and then they are justified in their atheistic antagonism...

You are making your own enemies.

Atheists do tend to get grumpy when you try to convert them.

One of my favorite family stories is when a couple of proselytizers (I don't know if there were Jehovah's Witnesses then) came to my great grandmother's door. Their opening line was "Madam, where will you spend Eternitiy?"

My great grandmother replied "In Hell, I presume!" and shut the door.

I've had a few of opportunities to talk to people that wanted to "save" me. One was at the park as I was watching my kid play and a couple others that knocked on my door.

After speaking with them for a few minutes they confessed to me (pun intended) that they had "never thought about religion that way".

They thanked me for my time and left.

[–]ziegfried 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So what were the points that impressed them?

[–]x52495 62 points63 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With the guy at the park, he asked me a few questions and we agreed that according to his bible, I was a sinner.

He then proceeded to ask my why I would not accept Christ as my savior. That unless I did, I would go to hell.

I told him that if God existed, he would see who I am, he would see what's in my heart, he would see how I treat my neighbors and family and that if that was not good enough for God, then I didn't need him.

He said something about how God is our father and that he punishes his children just like I punish mine if they disobey.

I asked him if he could explain to me how much love and forgiveness God has. He said that there was no way that we could even begin comprehend how much mercy and love has for us.

That's when I asked him:

Me: "Do you see those kids out there, which one is yours?"

Him: "I don't have any kids."

Me: "Okay, well this should be a little easier then. I want you to look at one of them and imagine that kid doing the worst thing possible."

I gave him a few seconds...

Me: "Okay, now I want you to imagine going up to that kid with a gallon of gasoline, pouring it on them and lighting them on fire as punishment."

He just looked at me.

Me: "I trust that you could never do that, huh?"

Him: "No, of course not."

Me: "So you're telling me that you have more love and forgiveness for a child that you don't even know than God has for his very own children?"

Him: "You know, I've never really thought of it like that..."

[–]Gargan_Roo 0 points1 point ago*

Technically Satan killed everybody, but through Adam's original sin.

Genesis 2:16-17

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

Genesis 3:4-5

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Adam made a conscious decision to trust the serpent over God, essentially calling God a liar. Leading to the phenomena called death in the entire human race, even though he was deceived. Making Satan the murderer of mankind by proxy.

John 8:44

You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

[–]addmoreice 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

technically it was the snake. not satan. No where is the snake said to be satan.

further, all snakes are punished with having no limbs and being required to eat dirt because of this snakes act...seriously, read it.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's common to deny this, and although it's not explicit, it's fairly reasonably implied when you take a look at the bible as a whole as well as consider rabbinic and early church interpretations. There is a lot of material on the subject but here are a few brief resources (ignore any preconceptions about the Answers in Genesis one, considering the article is purely theological in nature)

[–]addmoreice 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ie, this is how they have interpreted it.

yes, I know. I'm saying their is nothing explicit and it's simply interpreted and implied (and damn, that poor snake got one fucked up bum rap then didn't he?).

isn't answersingenesis always theological in nature? =-P

[–]philomathie 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

... It's true? Read the bible or give it a google, he is mentioned very few times; even when you count the instances where they don't explicitly refer to him.

While the several million figure is probably made up guesswork; God killed a lot of people. Think about the plagues or natural disasters.

[–]awakenDeepBlue 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sigh, I'll explain.

Since in the Christian viewpoint God is both the creator and tautologically the moral authority and a couple of other characteristics, it is not morally wrong for him to directly cause the deaths of people. Do you weep for every byte you delete? Do you cry when you make more space on your hard drive? No, you do not.

Of course from a Atheist standpoint God may be viewed as a monster, but the original post was too smug for me to leave alone

[–]deathdonut 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for being polite, on the internet

[–]bumwine 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So its problematic to pretend like he has love and mercy for his creation when we're nothing more than bytes on an organic hard drive. We have no reason to be kept around or deleted except his whim.

That's irrelevant though. I've heard tons of Christian apologetics where god feels pain and regret whenever he kills his own creation and/or he searches there heart and only if they're completely evil does he do so.

That's even more irrelevant, OP wasn't making a moral judgment, just stating numbers.

[–]harr1s -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're misinterpreting what was said-- no one mentioned anything about God's actions being immoral, just that he killed lots of people. Didn't even use the word "murder" or anything.

In other words, "If you're naughty, then Santa will leave you a chunk of coal in your stocking..."

[–]awakenDeepBlue -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct answer:

Christianity is more about apologizing for you sins rather than being a good person or doing good works. Being a good person and doing good works is more of a consequence of that.

[–]shankopotamus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Apologizing to a God for your sins. Sins that are only sins because He says so. Apologizing to avoid a punishment that only He made up and enforces. Apologizing for acting exactly as he made us, with free will. Free will with all of the horrible consequences that He foresaw, but apparently ignored because He wanted children in His image. In His image, but without the capacity to be in that image without destroying ourselves and each other, because He has both given us free will and has let Satan roam the earth rather than locking him up.

While He sits back, twiddles His thumbs and watches His children get abused, raped and killed.

Oh how He loves us.

[–]awakenDeepBlue -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you're willing to give up free will for a world without evil? How Faustian of you.

(I'm not sure if I used the term correctly)

[–]shankopotamus -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm fairly sure you used it incorrectly. But regardless, if you're trying to discuss something, why use an uncommon term you're unsure of rather than actually delineating what you find wrong or illogical about my perspective?

[–]awakenDeepBlue -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok fine, but I have to replying after this, because I have other stuff to do.

You complain about the problem with free will and evil. You complain that evil exists in the world, and that the god given free will has led mankind to commit evil. And then you complain that god is responsible for all of this.

The problem I have is that you want your cake and eat it too. God has given us both free will and the context to make the most meaningful cosmic choice of all: to choose between good and evil, to accept or reject God.

To have free will without anything meaningful to choose is pointless.

To have the choice between good or evil without free will is just pointless.

To have man make his choice and intervene to fix it nullifies his choice, rendering his original choice moot.

I hope you understood my point. I have to stop redditing for now.

[–]addmoreice 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the problem with this 'free will requires evil' idea combined with an all knowing all god is that it then means that this is the world that must be because it is the one with maximum free will with minimum evil. This is easily demonstrated to be false.

We can think of worlds with less evil without harming any free will (the problem of suffering vs the problem of evil. ie, non free will involved bad things, natural disasters, etc).

The second problem is that it's possible to make choices which are meaningful with the same gradient of possibility without evil, ie, a world from neutral to maximum good choices and no others. This would be the world that would exist if an omnibenevolent god existed. I can't hit you, my hand passes right through, but I can ignore you or give you a helping hand. Free will still exists, evil does not.

Finally, all of that requires the concept of non causative free will to exist, demonstrate this exists please. I'll wait.

If we as humans use police and punitive systems to reduce violent crime (and statistically we most certainly have in many cities) while still giving citizens the freedom to chose whether or not to commit that crime in the first place - its not inconceivable for a perfect, omniscient being to perfect this system 100%, is it?

[–]ExAthiest -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Okay, go up to your kid and tell them "You know what? When you die, you cease to exist. So does everyone else. Nothing anyone has ever done matters, or ever will matter. Life, and the universe, are pointless accidents. So go ahead and do the worst thing you can imagine, or kill yourself, or do the worst thing you can imagine and then kill yourself. You might as well, there's no reason not to."

If you can't or won't do that, not only have you never thought about what it means to be an atheist, but you are not one yourself, either.

Morality comes from religion, like it or not.

[–]x52495 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Morality does not come from religion. Humans, like other animals, develop compassion and empathy - it is an evolutionary trait that helps us survive.

Do you really believe that chimps do not care for their families? That whales don't care for their young? Do you believe that dogs don't care for their owners?

Do you believe that, had you personally been born in a desert island, you'd have the propensity to hurt, steal and kill?

If the bible is the only thing that's keeping you from raping and killing then there's something wrong with you.

Here's a good reason not to do something horrible and kill yourself:

Life is wonderful! I enjoy my life, so why would I want to end it? I enjoy bringing happiness to other people, so why would I want to hurt them?

[–]supersauce 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's silly-talk. Even from a purely secular viewpoint, the fact that any of us are here is amazing. To have the opportunity to live, and love, and do the simple things that bring joy should leave one in awe of the universe. To discount any of that simply because of a belief that there is no afterlife is ridiculous. If anything, atheists should treasure life and the wonders it entails more than someone who thinks this is a warm-up.

[–]caleeky 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Morality is born out of instinct more than reason. This is distinct from explaining why morality exists, in which case you can get into evolutionary advantages for social species. Reason helps to shape our instincts into a set of higher order conventions for behaviour and identify those cases where our instincts don't give us clear answers to social problems. Religious teaching includes such reasoning but isn't the only source.

[–]TheDetectivePrince 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's patently absurd. Atheism and nihilism are very different things. Morality is not intrinsically tied to faith or spirituality, nor does one come from the other. Just because you don't fear a punishment in another life doesn't mean you have nothing at all holding you back from committing crimes. Most people posses empathy as a natural emotional trait, and so will avoid committing crimes, especially those that involve harming another person. Hell, even a genuine sociopath might avoid committing crimes in order to avoid worldly punishment. To say that a "true" atheist must also lack morality, empathy, or self-control or be an extreme nihilist is laughable.

[–]frontseatdog -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Morality comes from religion, like it or not.

Such a simple thing to falsify that claim. One example of an atheist with 'good morals' suffices.

--- continuation from my previous reply ---

So the others were Jehovah's Witnesses.

They were trying to tell me that the financial crisis and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were signs of the impending Apocalypse.

Again, after talking with them for a while, they conceded that had they been proselytizing at different periods in our history, they'd have different "proof" that the world was about to end.

I reminded them about:

  • September 11th
  • The threat a nuclear holocaust during the cold war.
  • Vietnam War
  • WWII
  • WWI
  • The Great Depression
  • The Civil War

I also talked to them about how "when/where" you're born dictates what religion you are. I asked them why God, assuming he loves all of his children, would do that to some of us. How, at this very moment, there's an innocent child being born to Muslim parents. How a few hundred years ago, children were being born to Incas and Aztecs.

I told them how in my mind, if God existed, he would be above all, including where and when you were born. How I would imagine God looking at people in India, China, Mexico and the U.S. saying something like "look at my children with their various bibles" - I love them all!

This encounter was a little strange because I could sense that they were following me and very interested but they dared not say anything while the other was listening.

One of them asked me if it was okay if he came back and talked to me again someday. Sadly he never did.

I've spoken with several local JW's and they tend to be quite respectful when I question them about their beliefs and either knowledgeable about the bible or willing to bring someone who was better studied next time around. All in all, the meetings have been very enjoyable.

I always make it clear that unless they can convince me of the divinity of the bible that there was no chance of converting me, so that leads to some very interesting conversations. They have some interesting approaches to arguing an essentially unwinnable position.

Even better: I always come out a bit more knowledgeable about the Bible. Considering how important the book is culturally, this is always appreciated.

My uncle used to invite them into the backyard for a beer. He'd talk to them until they gave up and left.

[–]addmoreice 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've invited more then one group inside.

The one thing to always remember when arguing with the religious. ask them what they believe, don't tell them what their religion claims is the truth (unless they claim it says otherwise, always fun to show them what the official doctrine says when they say it's otherwise).

I've had catholic's say abortion is ok, the pope is not infallible about religion, that the communion is not literally the body of christ, that rape is a stoning offense in catholocism (yes, seriously). I've had JW's tell me I'm going to hell (wtf? hell isn't in your beliefs! sheesh!) etc etc etc. It's staggering what some people 'officially' believe, and what they actually claim to believe.

Listen to their claims first, then simply poke the obvious holes open. Asking questions which lead them to have to answer, especially when it displays the contradictions, is a great way to help them stop being delusional.

...or for them to convince you, you never know they could be right! (but i'm not taking that long bet).

These kind of Christians are so stupid it's painful.

These kind of people are so stupid it's painful.

FTFY

You ask anyone walking down the street what humans evolved from, and you'll probably get "monkey" as an answer.

I don't care what religion that person subscribes to (atheism included, naturally)- that's the answer you're likely going to get. Why? Because that's the popular definition of evolution.
Is it correct? No. But you may be unsuccessful getting them to change that opinion. It's an uphill battle to get more mainstream Christian leaders to put away the scientific concordism while reading and teaching origins of the Universe from the Bible (to our discreddit, this is the reason why about half of Christian students lose their faith while proceeding through higher education, though this is changing): this is difficult because of the "all-or-nothing" effect (i.e. not taking one section literally making a case to disregard ALL the Bible, and that's false since the Origins stories are a different type of writing than the entire rest of the book and you don't lose the messages of faith central to the stories within).

I mean... do you honestly think that the presence or absence of religion changes the intelligence level of an individual? Because it doesn't. There are lots of "dumb" atheists out there who analogue the Christians you hear about so much. Likewise, there are lots of smart Christians who understand certain things about the Bible that aren't intuitive at a first glance.

And speaking of telling:

What is the deal with this whole "witness" thing? If you live in America and don't know the "Jesus story" then you're probably blind and deaf.

Because some actually haven't heard, or are at a point in their lives where they're searching for answers and want to hear what someone else has found to be that answer. Perhaps either some event, or they're just looking out the window and think "This seems a little too perfect to be 'natural'" (though the stereotypical atheist laughs in the face of that argument) makes them think this.

Giving someone something to think about who WANTS to think about it and pursue it is a powerful thing to do. That's Witnessing 101, my friend, and it does work and lead to changed lives. (Though to one who does not believe they would quickly dismiss supernatural aspects of that)

I found that actual 18 year old educated human beings still believe that because you don't believe in a God that you are automatically unhappy. When I first started in a Philosophy and Ethics of Religion class a few years back and expressed my doubts about many gods, (at the time I was agnostic but by the end of the first year I was an atheist) I had one girl in the class just say, "oh you must be so unhappy not believing in God or an afterlife", I just replied clearly stating "I can be good, happy and content without the promise of an eternity in heaven."

OMG, I know, right! Lashing children is a favorite pastime of mine. And not just children!

I absolutely love walking through my neighborhood with my favorite bullwhip, Stella. I first got Stella when I graduated from Atheist School. Walking around with Stella the Bullwhip is so relaxing and such a great way to destress. I see one of my neighbors and I jump at the opportunity to rush into their yard and give them 40 lashes with Stella while they garden!

Best of all is that if you lash your neighbors hard enough then they'll scar! You'll get to see the sum of your handiwork over the course of weeks and months and years of constantly lashing your neighbors whenever they try to leave their homes!

I don't stop at lashing my neighbors and their children with my bullwhip. I lash their cars and their houses, too! The way I see it, anything I see while walking my Bullship, Stella, is fair game for lashing. Just this morning I spent a good 40 minutes lashing the Smiths fence. My heart was filled with joy as I took out my Atheist bitterness on their freshly painted fence. I lashed it and lashing it until my own hands started bleeding!

One time they rallied together in a mob and approached my home in the middle of the night holding flaming torches and bibles. They thought they would chase me away into the darkness of the forest but I let them have it! After lashing the entire community I used their own torches to cook their first born children. The animals I raise only to sacrifice to the Flying Spaghetti Monster and the Invisible Pink Unicorn fed so well that night!
