Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I visited Iceland when I was about 13, it was the most humbling experience of my life and truly opens your eyes to what possibilities nature has.

PS Check out Gullfoss, it's absolutely astounding.

After seeing the Glosoli and then Holocene music videos, I have decided that the entirety of Iceland must look like this and I need to visit.

[–]Dyrantua 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I lived there for half a year and you're pretty much correct. Although I must admit that I haven't seen the northern part of the country. If you like the scenery, you should definitely go there sometime! If you visit during the winter, you might even get to see the Northern Lights as a bonus.

Btw. it is a lot easier if you rent a car because the land is huge!

I've lived here most my life so I kind of envy people for finding this so special.

In turn, I find large, organized, agriculture plots off different varieties simply fascinating. Both driving through and flying over the Netherlands has been one huge 'wow' moment for me. Same goes for forests, (as you know) we don't really have them here. I remember being somewhere in Sweden when I was really young and start to find that stuff wasn't right around me and have a mild freakout inside when I realize the trees around me were friggin' huge. That wasn't even inside a forest! What I'm saying is forests are pretty cool things in my books!

Oh and real horses. They freak me out. I got very used to calling our ponies "horses" when I was young.

[–]Dyrantua 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's funny that you mention the Netherlands, because that is where I live and the things you mentioned are very normal to me and not as interesting as the raw nature of Iceland. But I suppose everything that is different from ones home becomes interesting.

The complete lack of trees took some getting used to! But to be honest, it took me a few days to figure that out because I was too overwelmed by the vulcano's, rocky landscapes and the rough ocean that surrounded me (I used to live in the south, on Vestmannaeyjar).

What I loved about the Icelandic animals is that they are a lot tougher then the ones we have here. Our sheep look kind of cute and cuddly, but the sheep I saw there where badass and jumping on the high cliffs like it was nothing! Oh, and their wool is used in those awesome sweaters.

Edit: This picture gives a better impression of the Icelandic sheep

If you ever make your way out California way, I encourage you to visit Muir Woods. It's a really neat experience.

[–]contrary_stereo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Muir is nice, but I'd suggest Montgomery Woods if you really want your head asploded by giant trees. Way larger and a tenth of one percent of the people. And free. And far, far more ginormous trees.

If you go in the summer, you get twilight at midnight. Once my cousin suggested we go check out a national park in the northeast of Iceland at 1 in the morning.

add: Oh, yes, the north of Iceland is very amazing as well.

[–]dracovich 0 points1 point ago

Well if you want to see the nature similar to this picture i recommend summer. You'll have daylight by the bucketful, and there won't be snow everywhere (although that obviously has it's charm as well).

Where in Iceland do you live? I live in South-west and i want snow. It says it's gona rain and the white, fluffy snow we have had for the past 2 weeks will go :(

Reykjavík. Kópavogur. I'v been pretty much sick for the last two months, finally seem to get over it. SNOW EVERYWHERE ! cue me getting a cold.

I have permanently stuffed nose during the winters. I want more snow. I live in Keflavik and it rained all yesterday. Even though there are still much left alot of it is slushy. And i want white hollidays so it will have to snow more.

Also, protip if you're into hiking:

Lónsöræfi is the most beautiful part of Iceland, i just spent five days there this summer, it blew my mind (and i'm Icelandic!) the colors there are just ridiculous. It's a hassle to get there, you need to drive for like 6 hours and then get a local farmer to driveyou for 2 hours before hiking one hour just to get to the cabin, but it's sooooooo worth it.

[–]dontgoatsemebro 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Awesome, I'm there!

[–]dracovich 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The trails btw don't demand you to be experienced, i went there with 3 friends that had never really been hiking, but you need to be in decent shape and have real good hiking gear (GPS won't hurt, a lot of people get lost and even die on the highlands if not properly prepared).

P.S. go the tröllakrókar route if you get there (google it to see the images), it's a LONG day, like 10 hours of hiking, but totally worth it.

Protip: If you ever fly to Europe (assuming you're in the states) Iceland Air usually offers great rates due to required layovers in Reykjavik. I had a friend do this over the summer, and due to volcanic activity his flight was delayed and they paid to put him up in a hotel and enjoy Iceland for a few days.

[–]NoSoySerenita 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hm, I've always flown Delta to Europe (mostly to London) because it's the cheapest. I think Reykjavik would be particularly out of the way from Orlando. I'm always down for saving money, though, so I'm definitely going to check it out next time. Thanks for the tip :)

[–]fross 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All flights to Europe from the US go up towards greenland / down from the pole, it's generally the shortest route, and the longest area with continuous land beneath it (obviously of benefit in case of emergency).

I've lived in Norway and Iceland (I'm Icelandic). And I'm sorry for being blunt, but no, you haven't seen fireworks like that. Even before the ridiculous rocket ban, the Norwegian displays never came close to the craziness of Icelandic New Year's Eve. :/

[–]dracovich 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By the way, fair warning since apparently a lot of tourists don't know this, NOTHING IS OPEN DURING HOLIDAYS, the 24th shit will be open until like ... 2-3pm, MAYBE, your hotel restaurant should be open, but everything else is closed. 25th is even worse, 24/7 supermarkets MIGHT be open, but probably won't, no stores are open. The 1st of january is the same.

[–]noveltylife 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also a neat thing for tourist to know. If you find yourself alone next to a mountain, DO. NOT. CLIMB. IT ! (Unless you really know what you are doing, and don't just think you know). A lot of sad stories about tourist just deciding that climbing a mountain is easy and just walking up not even in proper clothing.

[–]steffenstr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, I already know this. Checked when the stores were open before we ordered. I can see many tourists burning themselves on that one. On the closed days we plan on visiting the lagoon, as it is open year around. But other than that we don't know. Probably some strolling in the streets. Thanks for the heads up anyway! :)

[–]vman81 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was just in that lagoon this saturday.. it was 25F outside, and the water was between 80 and scalding... Try lying on your back with your lungs full, you'll just float around the salty water with your ears below water in warm darkness (the sun sets around 3pm now).. It's just indescribable... and there's a bar.

[–]steffenstr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]snorri 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They were basically gone before the Danes got here. Early settlers (vikings) chopped down what little there was of forests for fuel. Then forests struggle to grow here because of the harsh climate and winds.

[–]Gangleri 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The airport is in the middle of a peninsula which is pretty much just a collection of lava fields, while most of the country is without trees the area around Keflavík airport is especially bleak. If you know where to look there are some pretty interesting sights in the area though.

[–]dracovich 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Iceland doesn't really have "real" trees, not like the huge fucking forests of the neighboring countries. Most are more bush like, and the trees that are here are somewhat low (i believe because of strong winds? not sure).

But yeah, the airport itself is on a peninsula which consists mostly of old lava, so i don't think it's the greatest place for trees to grow, there's a crapload of moss though.

[–]hrafnigaur 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]E-penguin 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well first you have to split it up into the three words it is made out of:

"Selja-land-foss"

Then you have to ask an Icelander how to pronounce it correctly, as I am both waayyy too lazy to teach it as well as being Norwegian.

[–]we_need_evidence 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a brain fart and I think I found something logic in that name.

The first word, well..., Idk, but maybe a fall is the way land floss.

Ok, I'm gonna be downvoted to hell.

Edit: I found that Selja is a place, so my theory maybe right, haha.

[–]arnar 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not sure what you were smoking, but there is actually logic to it.

Sel is an outhouse that is placed far away from the actual farm, where farm animals are kept over summertime. Selja is the plural genitive (genitive is usually used in compound nouns). Seljaland thus refers to an area named after several such outhouses, and the genitive of that is Seljalands - which is tacked on to foss which means (water)fall.

My favorite was the "safety rope" at the top of Skógafoss, which was carefully placed at about a foot high so as to maximize the tripping hazard.

Oh wow, a place I've actually been! The guide said that the water in the stream was clean enough to drink, but he also said there were trolls in all the caves so I didn't entirely trust him.

I'm not correcting anybody here but I though reddit would like to know that the foss part of Seljalandsfoss means waterfall. The name literally means the waterfall of Seljaland. So the title is a little reptitive.

If anyone remembers the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in april/may of 2010, that name has meaning as well. Eyja = island, fjalla = mountain and jökull = glacier. The name literally means: the glacier of island mountain.

Was here with my girlfriend in June. Amazing, you can walk behind the water it's a cool experience. This waterfall is in the Southern part of the island right near Eyjafjallajokull...er uh, that volcano that messed up all of Europe's travel plans.

Such a beautiful picture! I was there this summer with school friends, and it was amazing! Stood behind the waterfall to get a picture, and all of a sudden the water decided to change its path and move to right where I was standing. Even though I was soaked for the rest of the day, it was an amazing experience! On my list of places to travel once I'm out of school for sure!

My sister-in-law biked around iceland for a month or so and when we were looking through the 100s of pics she took, I couldn't help but notice that in Iceland, waterways just seem so young.

Same goes for this pic - It almost seems like the waterfall just happened one day a few years ago and the surrounding landscape had to improvise an outlet for the water.
