I saw that fake comic many years before I got diagnosed with ADHD, and it did affect my opinion.

Ritalin doesn't work that way at all. It's stupid propaganda, no more accurate than vaccines causing autism.

Calvin & Hobbes meant a lot to me growing up in the 90s. This picture makes me sad. :[

[–]ErnestMorrow 30 points31 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This isn't how medication for ADD and ADHD works at all. The comic is making a point about growing up sure, but it demonizes medication which many people actually need. Amphetamines don't make you uncreative or boring, they just focus your attention and if anything make you feel more creative. I appreciate the comic for what it is but it sends the wrong message. ADD medication is abused and probably overprescribed but there are also very real cases of people who need it to function too.

[–]ADD_Booknerd 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love you. Thank you for saying what I always want to say when people demonize any and all use of ADD drugs.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

Honestly, this is how Ritalin worked for me in school. What makes you think he isn't being creative with his assignment? What makes you think that his assignment is going to be boring? I think you judge much too quickly.

[–]paprikacha 4 points5 points ago

Medicines work differently for everyone. One of my close friends has ADHD and functions quite well without it, and whenever he's pushed into having to take the medication for it he loses a part of himself. It's very hard to describe, but there's a marked difference, mostly in the fact that his sense of humor vanishes completely and he actually gets a bit depressed. And the Lithium that makes it possible for millions of people with manic depression to function without such horrendous mood swings actually does turn me into a zombie -- the year I had to take it was one of the worst years of my life. I stopped writing, I stopped playing video games, and I actually barely remember anything for that time.

I'm not saying that medication isn't a godsend for some people, because it most certainly is, but our body chemistry, diets and lifestyles are so different that taking it is bound to be a different experience for everyone, and it's not always a positive one.

[–]codeki 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree. When I was depressed, my medicine didn't help make me feel better, it just made me quit thinking.

Well, I suppose technically, you aren't depressed if you feel absolutely nothing.

I'm an idiot I didn't click the link above... However the attitude towards medication applies the same to any neurological/ behavioral diagnosis. We praise science but demonize medication? Just doesn't make sense. I have depression and the second people hear Prozac they look at me like a freak ugg.. All I know is that I am happy and healthy physically and mentally...and thats how I roll ;)

[–]Boshaft 2 points3 points ago

I think the idea is that the entire world of the comic/show is actually a figment of her imagination.

[–]Ezekyuhl 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe you are not familiar with Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. It is just that, the comic suggests that the entire world is imaginary and just in the head of one of the characters.

The picture I link to is not particularly related to this comic, but is Calvin dropping off Hobbes at Foster's, where they would be separated forever as Calvin would grow out of believing in imaginary friends. Hope that clarified some things. :)

[–]Zirbs 0 points1 point ago

The night in the forest? No clue.

Honking horn? That was Calvin pretending it was Hobbes doing it.

But the Houdini chair knots...that was definitely some evidence for Hobbes' existence.

Well... In what way? That behavior is accurate, but the reference itself is from a old TV show.

[–]oatmealsnap 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Autistic children don't have imaginations like that. Their imagination is usually based in reality, and if they do have imaginary friends, they are usually other family members or are taken from TV shows they have seen. I'm no expert, I am just basing this off of what I have read.

This behavior is more along the lines of what someone with psychosis would show.

[–]firemylasers 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism

I have HFA, and my imagination can get pretty vivid at times. It's in no way limited to being based on reality, although I'm on the light end of the spectrum, but it's about the same for most people. Just saying this from personal experience.

[–]mu-beta 72 points73 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Stolen from an 80's sitcom, but yeah. Reference: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StElsewhere

[–]BrianDoyleMurray 60 points61 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not stolen if it's obviously a play on the show. Everyone knows about that ending.

Also, St Elsewhere definitely wasn't a sitcom.

[–]mishugana 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if the intersection of people who have watched St. Elsewhere and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends is probably quite small.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Never watched St. Elsewhere, only watched the ending on youtube.

[–]neodorian 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was 11 when St. Elsewhere ended and 27 when Foster's started its run. Too young to be interested in St. Elsewhere and too old to have heard of Foster's when it was running. I know the ending from "Elsewhere" because it's become such a trope but I had never heard of "Foster" until this thread.

[–]BrianDoyleMurray 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You needn't've watched that shitty show to know that ending.

[–]doomchimp 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand it at all. What's the comic, and what's the reference? Is it that the Red-headed girl is imagining the first frame in her head, while she looks into the snow globe?

[–]lolersauresrex 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's basically saying that the whole show took place in the imagination of an anti-social autistic girl. That the show was her escape, and when Mac asked why she never had imaginary friends, the irony was that they were ALL her imaginary friends.

[–]doomchimp 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks. I was completely unaware of the context. I sort of figured it, but thanks a lot for the context.

[–]Perryn 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She was imagining everything that had ever happened in the show (I guess it helps if you know these characters are from a TV show about a home for imaginary friends that kids grew out of).

[–]Floppyboobsack 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ya that helps, never saw the show.

[–]doomchimp 2 points3 points ago

[–]trolling_thunder 6 points7 points ago

For me, the biggest mindfuck about the original was when they killed Mimsie

[–]nerdCaps 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You want a mindfuck? This is a mindfuck. For those who don't want to click: if Tommy (the autistic kid from St. Elsewhere) made everything up, then all of the crossovers in that Universe (especially Law and Order) are also made up, and then all the crossovers in L&O (lots) are also made up, etc.... to the point that about 20% of all of the history of television is just in the mind of one autistic kid.

[–]babyjesusmauer 14 points15 points ago

In all fairness, here is actually works. And it's not directly stolen, it's altered so it's touching and sad, instead of just being controversial and random.

Oh, and St. Elsewhere is full hour drama. Not a 30 minute sitcom.

[–]Jymotion 30 points31 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not exactly the same, but "the entire show is in the mind of an autistic kid looking at a snowglobe" isn't something that can be re-used without getting called out

[–]Doktor_Mabuse 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

at a certain point something can become so well known that it can be recognized as an homage or reference without a great deal of explanation being necessary. Calling someone out for this is the equivalent of calling someone out for quoting Shakespeare: A:"To be or not to be that is the question" B:"Wow you must be really profound...hey wait a minute! That's Shakespeare! Hey everybody this guy's a PHONY! A BIG FAT PHONY!"

[–]Tdogger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or possibly quoting the "big fat phony" guy from family guy? :P AHA not actually a burn because thats clearly what you were trying to do

[–]bartholomew5 -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would argue that using a quote is substantially different than having the entire story wrap up with the same underlying core story.

Granted, this is the first time I've ever heard of or seen this comic, so I have no history of it to know what the rest of it is like. My opinion is based on this one picture.

I never understood the need to "grow up." Not in the sense of responsibility, of course, as we should all know the basics of adulthood, such as managing finances and composing yourself professionally. But I knew parents of friends that abhorred the idea of childish play and imagination into teenage years and beyond. What's so bad about having a happy-go-lucky sense of wonderment?

My parents strongly nurtured the continuance of this behavior into adulthood. And now I still day-dream daily, pretend I'm an astronaut or a professional athlete or the President while hanging out in my yard, do random and wild things (like take a personal day and go climb a mountain, just because), and other various youthful and imaginative activities, and I am otherwise a very happy and adjusted adult with a family, a home that is 70% paid for, and well paying and successful professional career.

My heart breaks for people who feel broken and weathered by adulthood.

Being an adult can be great if you do it right.

Is this the actual ending to the series?

[–]megadeus 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No.

From Wikipedia:

The series finale. When Mr. Herriman reveals that Mac is moving, Bloo decides to give him the best day ever, though things do not go as he plans. All day, Mac does things with everyone but Bloo, making him angrier and more emotionally hurt after every disappointment. However to everyone's surprise/relief (and Mr. Herriman realizes he forgot to mention this), it turns out Mac is moving to an apartment just next door that was held by Louise's family. On a less happy tone for everyone at Foster's, Cheese ends up moving in because Louise's new home doesn't allow imaginary friends. This was Craig McCracken's final project before he quit his job at Cartoon Network and stopped doing animation.

Wow, that made me sad. I have a neice that's autistic and I'm just happy to see that she's more social now. She use to be more isolated like this.

Working with children with autism spectrum disorder, this really reinforces how we should all view this disorder. People often say that children with ASD are just stone statues, but the human mind is such an amazingly intricate web of pathways and neural compensation that we just can't know what wonderful, or even painful thoughts they may have. Just please know that anyone with depression, ADHD,ADD, Autism, we are all just people, hopefully redditors, who shouldn't be judged :)

Was never a big fan of these types of interpretations of cartoons. Reminds me of the whole "ash is really in a coma" theory about the Pokemon TV show.

Reading that reminding me of an episode of news radio, it turns out that Mr. James is an autistic who is just looking into a snow globe and imagining every thing.

Actually If you turn dave and lisa into an old lady and jimmy into that girl it is 100% the same.

You guys know that's a rip off of the end to that 80's medical show with Denzel Washington in it right? I forgot the name but it was one of the first times a black man was portrayed working in a hospital side by side with white doctors. And then at the end it turns out its all in this kids head and Denzel is actually a janitor in the real world.

Seriously, which show is this? This is supposed to be a show, but I haven't seen the name of the show listed anywhere. No matter how much you downvote me I still don't believe it belongs in this subreddit.
