What's shown here is actually a cross-sectional cut of a "packet" that travels the many tubes that make up the internet, much like the suction tubes at a drive-in bank. The process by which these cats are taken from the supply farm to the computer is known as FTP, or the Feline Transfer Protocol.

The photo shown here is an old photo taken at a switching center from the days of 56k internet, meaning that the center could transfer 56 kittens at a time. Back in the 56k days, the process of pulling a kitten from a supply tube and placing it in a destination tube was done manually by people took a lot of time! Recently though, the process has become automated, allowing millions of kittens to be moved per second!

This recent increase in kitten efficiency comes at a price though, the kitten farms at the far end of the supply tubes are having to produce kittens at a higher and higher rates to keep up with growing internet speed and kitten demand. Luckily, network engineers are smart! In order to increase the number of kittens being produced, they've come up with a technology called TCP/IP, or Transmitting Cat Packets / Invert Package.

After the kittens are viewed and upvoted, they are sent back to the source farm to help produce more kittens. Because kittens grow up so darned fast, by the time the packet reaches the source farm, the kitten is a nearly mature cat, ready to help keep up with the tremendous growth of the internet. Initial tests with TCP were unsuccessful though, because the cats kept arriving butt-first (and anybody who owns a cat knows that they don't travel well backwards). To fix this, computers are given an "IP" instruction, or "Invert Package".

The newest technology though, is Optical Fiber. By running extremely long fiber optic cables, kittens can be viewed directly from the source farm. This lowers travel time substantially, as kittens can now get to your computer at the speed of light! Fiber optic technology is currently in-use in Europe, and is expected to reach America in mid-2013.
