Argh, thank you for the video. I have to say it raises so many more questions...about the cat's state of mind.

I don't know if I'm convincing myself but it sounded like a short fall. As the owner of a clumsy fat cat, I just have to believe it.

I can imagine a smaller dog being more likely to come out of that unharmed. Just seems like less mass means a less damaging fall. Was he fully okay or do you just mean he survived?

[–]Hammburglar 14 points15 points ago

Once when I was on my girlfriend's grandpa's pontoon boat with our dog decided it was a good idea to jump off the front. Luckily with my cat-like reflexes (GET IT?!) I was able to grab his collar before he fell in the water, and through all the shouting the driver was somewhow able to make out that he was supposed to stop the boat, just after the dog fell out of his collar. And what was probably the longest 3 seconds of my and probably everybody else's life, the dog popped up out of the water about 10 feet behind the propeller. He refused to ever go near that boat again.

[–]nadarapist 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a puggle do this to me while on a boat. I still had her leash wrapped around my hand , so she's getting dragged by her neck skipping off of waves while I scream at my friend to stop the boat. Makes me wonder what the hell that dog was thinking. She's a hyper little thing.

I had a dog do that once. I wasn't driving that fast (maybe 25 to 30 mph) and the dog was on a choker chain and on a leash. He jumped out the window and got far enough to get his whole body out and then just dangle by the leash.

I was able to stop very quickly and no harm was done, but that freaked me out a bit.

That wasn't the smartest dog I've every had.

My dog did this in 2003. I was driving cross country and it was my first couple of hours on the road. I was driving a 1978 toyota corolla stationwagon in the subtle color of holy fuck yellow. It was mean. It only had AM radio. So I was driving up the coast from SC to DC and in an instant my surf boards went airborne. And like a moron I slammed on the brakes and everything I spent hours packing came crashing forward, except one thing: my loyal black lab. He jumped out the window and hit the ground and luckily skid like it was a patch of ice. There was a moment, when I could see my dog sliding past the car and my surfboards headed towards the semi behind me that I knew the next 5 minutes would be nothing good.

Before I knew it I jumped out of my car and a curtain of dust lifted up and there in the highway was my buddy. I ran and picked him up and like any gentle father I said promising words in his ear which I remember sounding like, "Fuck, holy mother fuck, fucking, fuck, fuck, fuck this!" But after I checked him, there was only a scratch. Oddly enough, it turns out my car had an affair with the salty ocean air, and it wasn't that my surfboards were tied down wrong. As it turns out, the roof rusted out and the entire roof rack detached from the car leaving 4 large holes in my roof. Surfboards missed the semi and a little ding repair went a long way. 3 days later Hurricane Isabel came to shore and the water dripped through the still forming bond-o and dripped coldly in the car, making my feet prune, and the car steam up in an awful stench.

I never felt more lucky and more free

TL:DR: Dogs like to chase things. Humans are more dumb.

I was the same way. Had dogs for the longest time, and then my cat came into my life thanks to an ex convincing me to adopt him. He actually was supposed to belong to her, until after two days when she decided she couldn't take care of him, and she left him for me to take care of. It wasn't long before the two of us were bonded. He even made me realize just how wrong the stereotype that cats only think for themselves are. He was more loyal than most dogs!

[–]SuperShamou 4 points5 points ago

My cat Sox died this way after somehow forcing a window open... he was incredibly dumb and a total jerk to other people and cats. I must have saved his life 20 times before natural selection finally got him. Just that morning he pulled a 50 pound stereo speaker off a shelf while climbing the fabric cover. I saw the speaker tipping and dove to deflect it sideways, maybe 1/10 of a second before Sox woulda been smushed.

Perhaps more intriguing than purring is the cat's ability to survive falls. The research of veterinarians Wayne Whitney and Cheryl Mehlhaff at the Animal Medical Center in New York City shed light on this ability in 1987. The cat's habit of falling out of open windows provided the researchers with an opportunity to study 115 cats that had fallen from high-rise apartments in New York City. The average fall was 5.5 stories. Of the 115 cats studied, 90 per cent survived, including one cat that fell 32 stories onto a sidewalk and suffered only a mild chest injury and a chipped tooth. Interestingly, cats that fell from 9 or more stories suffered fewer injuries than those falling from lower heights. Among cats that fell from 9 to 32 stories, only 5 per cent suffered fatal injuries, but 10 per cent of those that fell from 7 or fewer stories died.

How do cats manage to take falling so easily? For one thing, in comparison to human beings, a cat is much smaller and lighter. Also, a cat has more body surface area in proportion to its weight than a human being has. This increase in surface area results in greater air resistance, which slows the fall. The important thing, however, is that a falling cat apparently positions itself to form a sort of parachute. Less than one second after it starts to fall, a cat quickly rights itself in midair with all four legs pointing downward. The cat's inner ears act like an internal gyroscope, telling the cat which direction it is falling. With the legs pointed downward, the cat then spreads its legs so that its body forms a sort of parachute that increases air resistance. With its limbs flexed, the cat also cushions the force of impact by landing on all four legs. The force of the impact is distributed through the muscles and joints.

Whitney and Mehlhaff believe that the parachute effect comes into play mainly above four stories, at the point where the cat has reached its greatest rate of descent. Of the 115 cats the researchers studied, only 1 of 13 cats that fell nine or more stories sustained a bone fracture, whereas most of the cats that fell from lower stories suffered some type of broken bone.

I think they studied all of the recorded accidents of cats falling off buildings, rather than actually throwing cats off buildings themselves.

I heard this on QI.

I think the evolution of this ability is strongly correlated with the evolution of the animal's curiosity, and willingness to jump to far away ledges.

CURIOSITY EVOLVED THE CAT

[–]tubcat 9 points10 points ago*

Killed many in the process, but that's part of the whole thing.

[–]tuptain 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's due to the fact that historically cats slept in trees to evade predators at night and no matter how practiced you are everyone falls out of bed occasionally.

[–]NeilFraser 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hold on there. I think we may have biased data. The data was collected by veterinarians.

If my cat falls out of a window and turns into a two-dimensional stain, I'm not going to bring him to a vet once I finish shovelling him off the sidewalk. Thus the vet would only see cats who (at least initially) survive the fall.

[–]SetToGeek 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sample bias. Cats that died were probably reported less then those who needed medical treatment. Also reporting bias, I could see people reporting higher floors on injuries and lower on deaths. I wouldn't really take that study too much to heart, but is a good basis to do some further research.

Perhaps this is because during acceleration in free fall, your inner ear cannot reference gravity. Once you approach terminal velocity, your inner determine the direction of gravity because your body is no longer accelerating. After a bit of google research, a cat's terminal velocity is around 60 mph, which is reached after around 120 ft, or around 11 stories. This is remarkably close to the figure cited for cat survival. Of course the cats also have visual and tactile (wind) input in processing fall information. Once the cat knows which direction the ground is, it can position itself for maximum survival.

[–]vinfx 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also consider that a human jumping out of a 2nd story window in the same manner has an excellent chance of survival. As a teenager I used to jump from 1.5 story heights onto grass. I was perfectly fine. The worst injury I risked was a sprained ankle, which didn't happen.

When people get injured from a 1.5 story fall, it's when the person lost their balance unexpectedly and fell at a strange angle so they struck the ground with their head or they injured themselves because they were obese thereby generating more force upon landing.

My cat jumped out of a 3rd floor window. He was a little stiff for a few day or two, but no bones were broken.

[–]Uberphantom 191 points192 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, Cats have a non-lethal terminal velocity.

[–]T1LT 151 points152 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I've read more cats survive falling from above the 4th floor than from lower ones because on the lower ones they have less time to be able to adopt a position where they extend their legs and that slows the fall.

Edit: This guy seems to have the facts better.

[–]Rasalom 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't this info based on cats being brought into vets for treatment after a fall? Wouldn't there be a huge gap in info where cats that fell from higher areas were not brought into vets because they were, you know, dead?

[–]Apogee15 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They still break bones/hips, and if they don't get medical attention that will probably be lethal.

But you're right.

[–]ExplainsTheObvious 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually, they usually don't even break bones when they fall, even from great heights. Cats actually have a "gliding" position they hit that slows them down. The biggest problem they have is not falling far enough to right themselves and get into position.

[–]Apogee15 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on
