That has a lot to do with Jackie's style of martial art. It's a showy form of kung fu developed for the Peking Opera.

Jackie likes to use props to choreograph fights, because they're more dynamic and unusual. They also add an element of surrealism and comedy to what, for all intents and purposes, would otherwise be a brutal fight. Think Bruce Lee's fights for comparison.

Leg doubles! The guy doing the kicks didn't know how to pull kicks as stunt actors are suppose to. Jackie got annoyed after almost being kicked so many times in the takes so he asked his own bodyguard to be leg doubles. All the focus shots that were legs only were leg doubles.

Lock to lock - turning the steering wheel completely from one side to the other until it can turn no more.

A different ratio of the gears inside the steering rack will let you turn from one side to the other more quickly (more sensitive steering). A standard steering rack takes 2.5 turns to go from being fully left to fully right, and vice versa.

Syncromesh reverse gear - basically means you won't grind all the gears and explode the gearbox if you try to slam the car into reverse before all forward motion has ceased. The vast majority of manual transmission cars don't have a syncromesh reverse gear and so will have bad things happen if you try to do that.

Minor correction: Most manuals DO have a syncro gearbox. That's why you can shift without having to rev-match.

Reverse is another story, though. 'Cuz if you pop out of gear really quick while going forward, your intermediate shaft is still spinning the wrong way. Then you grind it going into Reverse. You need a special gearbox that can deal with that.

Not necessarily and probably not in this case.

The slide in this case is similar to a rear-entry slide, a regular 180-turn, or taking a hair pin (front entry but mechanics are the same - high gear entry, power off/neutral/rear-lock in the slide for momentum, power on at low gear). Full lock is not necessary either, for initiating hand brake turns (j-turns, forward 180s, etc) you only have to pull the wheel from 9-6 or so - a fast 1/2 rotation or so rather than the 1.5 for full lock. See Tiff doing a handbrake turn for proof.

What carries the car over is momentum. For manuals (most likely for the EVO), the car is going to be in neutral and power is off during the slide and the revs would be low enough to enter reverse right afterwards (Tiff enters 1st in the video but reverse would work too). Note that the car slows down a lot for a slight moment before it backs into the spot.

If it were one of those car shows where they pull 180's and go 30-40 mph in reverse (Top Gear show, various car shows, Universal Stunt Show) then yes, a special car with multiple synchro'd reverse gears would be necessary. At the speed this EVO backs up in, that is entirely not necessary.

TIL that people think the Mini is a small car. That's what I drive (fun car, BTW!), but it's the biggest car I've had in a very long time.

It seems to me that cars are getting bigger, not smaller. Look at the new Camaro, for crying out loud. It's the size of a family sedan. It should be 70% the size it is. Same for the Mustang. Sports cars are supposed to be small.

Look at the Camry. When I was in college I drove an '85 and an '86 (basically same car), and then in grad school I got a '91, which was noticeably bigger. I saw a new one the other day, but I thought it was an Allion or some other Toyota boat.

Too damned big, all of them.

I don't have one on my truck. I meant when having to make a wider turn to get in or out of the space. Mainly when cars parked too close to lines, makes it even more of a pain when you have a truck as they usually have a wider wheel base making it turn like a bus.

Pretty easy. Clutch in, yank wheel all the way and lock steering to left while pulling handbrake, straighten steering to be going straight in reverse after 180 degrees of rotation, clutch out + shift to neutral while spinning, after spin complete release the handbrake and shift into reverse. Then steer into spot backwards.

Maybe not so easy...

It's not a rear wheel drive, it's a Mitsubishi Evolution 6 I believe...and you can do this by traveling at roughly 60 kilometers per hour or so and pulling the handbrake, releasing the clutch once you're heading backwards and steering it into place.

I saw someone try to do this in real life. I was leaving a cafe a little after midnight. There was a parking lot across the street. A pickup truck sped around the corner, cut his lights, pulled into the parking lot, but there was a cop car just sitting there with a cop drinking her coffee. So the guy must have freaked out, because when he pulled into the space, he hit the wall and he horn was stuck on. A few seconds later, the four cop cars that were chasing him came around the corner.

It could have been a pretty slick move. If that cop didn't happen to be there, and if he didn't crash into the wall, he would have completely blended in with the rest of the parking lot.

I saw someone try to pull a similar move by whipping into a parking where I had just parked. The only difference was the cop car was about 20 feet behind the guy trying to escape and the scene would have ended with the officer pointing his gun at the driver and yelling at him to get on the ground.

Nineteen states require only one license plate to be placed on the rear of the vehicle: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Which implies it varies throughout the state. It's called open mindedness, and cultural relativism.
