Sweet. The 35th repost of this comic today.

Hmmm. Both intriguing.

I don't think that that logic is sound. I'm not a logician, but hopefully a dumb example should illustrate my point:

Imagine the world is at 80% goodness. Death is 0% goodness (hypothetically). Jesus McBuddha dies, dropping the goodness level to 76%. The world is worse off, but McBuddha is now in a place with a (much lower) goodness level of 0%.

While what Blue Shirt says could be true (if the goodness level of death is the same or higher than that of life), it's not true by default and you can't really know without knowing how good death is.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If you actually think about what he is saying, it doesn't make any sense. It is possible he is in a better place, but not by default because the place he ends up in isn't necessarily the same as Earth before he left.

[–]fuckin_a 3 points4 points ago

I think you misunderstood- the whoa dude bit is that he only exists in the past, because death is, by his definition, the absence of being. And that past Earth is a better place because he is still alive there.

Not to delve into issues of the soul more than the comic did, but if when you refer to a person you refer to their body (brain included) then no matter how their body is dealt with, they are still on/in/around/near the same earth. Assuming a dead brain cannot subjectively prefer anything, the betterness would have to be democratically decided upon. Living persons affect the world by their actions; is ceasing to affect the world by dying truly an effect? Meaningless speculation perhaps. (on the influence of dead people because they made their changes when they were alive: I am leaving derivative effects be)

It seems to me upon thinking more on this, the topic is a meaningless cycle of arguments that have use only as rhetorical practice. I don't want to say any more because i feel like wikipedia when people keep clicking the second link.

is ceasing to affect the world by dying truly an effect?

My only counter point that I can think of is martyrdom.

[–]jkvandelay 5 points6 points ago

I like this comic. But...

they are forgetting about how good the new place is before the dead person showed up.

[–]PariahFish 7 points8 points ago

Fuck man. Christopher Hitchens.

[–]MrDanger 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're not in a better place. They're fucking dead. Oblivion, not the next room.

[–]fuckin_a 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He only exists in the past; that is the better place, because he still exists there.

[–]MrDanger -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wishful thinking. He's dead. The past is not a place; it's a concept that only exists in your head.

[–]fuckin_a 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well that's the thing- he doesn't exist anymore. Hitchens is gone, but if you were to say "he's in a better place," you would mean a world that no longer exists, that of the past, but which was better than our current world.

[–]MrDanger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How can something that doesn't exist be "better" than anything that does? Does not compute.

[–]fuckin_a 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do we know for sure that the present is "real" and other times are not? Just because WE can only measure things from our current standpoint?

I do agree that comparing the worth of our planet between two different time periods, even if both or perhaps neither actually exist anymore, is a bit silly.

[–]MrDanger 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, we're sure it does not exist. There's no evidence at all of a giant celestial warehouse full of the past. The now is a singular quantum state. When the wave collapses, there's no going back.

[–]fuckin_a 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Upvote for the conversation, but quantum mechanics generally theorizes that time comprises a dimension like space. With space, just because you walked home from your friends house doesn't mean your friend's house ceases to exist. But if our brains lacked the capacity, as with newborns, you can bet we would not have the awareness that anywhere "else" exists. Such is the case with time.

[–]fuckin_a 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

DOES NO ONE UNDERSTOOD THAT THIS COMIC IS SAYING THAT HITCHENS NOW ONLY EXISTS IN THE PAST, A BETTER PLACE BY DEFAULT BECAUSE HE WAS THERE?

I know it's been a while but RIP George Carlin He will forever be remembered for his humorous insight.

[–]Routerbox 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand why you say that. I thought about losing carlin a lot today because of losing hitchens. They were similar minds.

[–]potato999999 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This might be a little off tangent, but here's my $0.02:

When I first discovered Carlin, I thought to myself, "wow I feel really sheltered." My peers criticized him for his profanity and iconoclastic views on societal and religious norms. I say that behind his humor and abrasive language there was something he really wanted to teach or at the least have us critically think about. I remember one of his skits regarding "America getting dumber." I feel like its really shed light on how politicians might think.

I was sad to hear of his passing away because it has always been a dream to meet this person in a crowd or in person.

This is not whoadude material.

My best "Woah, Dude" moments are almost always when immersed in conversation, not staring at an animated gif that has been floating around the web for years. I respect your opinion all the same, everyone has their own thing :>

I guess some people are easily whoa'ed.

[–]devbangJungle love 8 points9 points ago

Ture, but consider it this way. Maybe you are too jaded.

[–]never_knows_best 0 points1 point ago

I agree. Sounds jaded as fuck.

look; Tivo increases viewership of ads; I contend that if millions of people see several stolen explosm comics; then thousands of people will end up viewing the site, that otherwise wouldn't...

You seem to be implying that there is no way to correctly view the comic unless I am at the main site.

Fuck that shit

[–]liberal_libertarian 1 point2 points ago

The people who run explosm have requested reddit to use imgur in it's place. the link is in the comic itself.

None of their matter left, it's just disintegrating back into the earth and it may now reintegrate into many other forms. As far as we know: all of their matter and energy and such should never really leave.
