Look at the other side of it: it's really easy to take an iPhone frmo an 8 year old. Ever since it became accepted to give little kids a $600 phone, I've been on track to retire 5 years early. Good times.

A coworker bought a kindle fire for a 3 year old.

Your coworker is an idiot. Ask him for a loan and then don't pay it back. Free money.

I agree, the concept of these little kids with over-elaborate expensive devices, that could probably feed them for a few months, is a little bit ridiculous. When i was eight, i would have shit my pants for a $2 action figure.

yeah, but deep down didn't you always want the 3$ one that yelled out its catch-phrase

The part about expensive gadgets as a kid is starting to hit close to home.

Weren't all the other 93's on reddit given a kind of gameboy/n64 as a very young child?

[–]YouKnowThatGuyWeKnow 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, 91 here, and there's a difference between a 100~ gameboy/game system that is hard to break and multiple people can use and giving an 8 year old an elaborate 'toy' they really have no use for/can't take care of.

[–]MrClocky 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose, but grant me that you can see the parallels drawn. Accounting for inflation, a 100~ gameboy isn't that far off a shot from a current 600~ ipod.

Edit: Nope nope, that was stupid to think that between 93 and 11 there would be 600% inflation. You make a very valid point.*

[–]YouKnowThatGuyWeKnow 1 point2 points ago

:P

Isn't inflation like 4% a year or something, I may of pulled that out of my ass but I think I heard/read it somewhere haha.

[–]kashk5 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to the inflation calculator, $100 in 1993 money is about $150 in 2011 money. Only iPods you could get for that are the nano and the shuffle. Cheapest iPod touch is $199.

A few months? shit wait until they're in college like me, living on a diet of refried beans, shredded cheese, taco sauce, pop corn, and water. For $600 I could probably live for a year and make a couple months rent.

I'll just leave this here.

While the gif is funny and the sentiment is righteous, it may be that it's not the kids' fault.

All parents and future parents need to watch this. The doc said it best: Kids today have to compete with people who have PHDs and MBAs in child psychology; masters of subliminal advertisement and social manipulation which kids can't even begin to understand. Children are now essentially raised to be consumerist proles and the only way out of it is to keep them away from popular media. In that case, have fun explaining to an 8 year old why they can't do what all the other kids are doing (and are being ridiculed at school for it).

You're right, the cultural norm is unhealthy and it may be challenging to support a child through peer pressure.

Some schools like Waldorf schools recommend that households do not own a TV. Which may be challenging for parents who are addicted to TV programming.

I've got a niece with an iPad. She's 5. Her parents actually had to change the iTunes password on the account because she had memorized it and bought games without asking. She could not understand that her parents had to PAY for the apps she was buying (she didn't see anywhere to insert money) but she knew that by using that password, she was doing something she wasn't supposed to.

I will clarify and throw in the fact that it was a used iPad that they purchased for 200 bucks, but it doesn't make it any less painful.

Sorry, but comments about "kids these days" and their technology really annoy me. These are the very same people that look back on their childhood, complete with Ataris, Sega Dreamcasts and the like, without any of that judgment.

The world has progressed technologically. What you perceive as precious and luxurious is what our children will perceive as the norm. It's the same thing that happened with the previous generation.

[–]OhEmEffingGee 1 point2 points ago

I completely agree with you. I remember the first time I ever played an Atari... The thing that boggles my mind is that she knows how to use it so... well? It's unsettling. Like the example with the password for itunes. She knew that entering an 8 digit password would get her games, but she simply doesn't understand that they cost money and only Mom and Dad should download/purchase apps. Trying to explain it to her has proved pointless. I also think it's a bit of a pricey toy to use as a means to teach a 5 year old responsibility. No, it cannot go into the bathtub with you. No, you cannot throw it on the floor when you realize your iPad has "child lock" on it. No, you cannot use it as a placemat, and NO THERE IS NO WIFI HERE.

And I guess I should mention... I don't have one, and every time I see her playing with it I want to trip her, grab the iPad, and RUN.

[–]aixelsdi 2 points3 points ago

I think you are approaching it from the wrong angle. Psychologically, 5 year-olds simply cannot understand the consequences of their actions. Just because it happens to be shown with a more-expensive-than-average piece of technology doesn't make it any worse.

As a lesson to teach responsibility, perhaps an Ipad is not the best choice. But with a child of 5 years, not much will be anyways.

[–]OrbitCase 1 point2 points ago

I agree. Also, I think when kids are raised around this type of technology it becomes intuitive for them. I have a 2 1/2 year old nephew who knows how to use his dad's touchpad. He can play Angry Birds and other games on it. When he was 1 he knew how to access pictures on his dad's android phone and scroll through them. He now knows how to make phone calls, and if there is a picture of the person next to the name, he knows who he is calling.

painful? why?

theres tons of great apps for little kids out there. most of them are educational. my niece learned to count on an iPad. she also uses it all the time for spelling, reading, math, etc. it's her mothers ipad, but that doesn't make any difference.

what if they spent 200 dollars on one-on-one tutoring for their child? would that be "painful"?

[–]OhEmEffingGee 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Painful only because I want one and she suddenly forgot how to share.

[–]Purple6391 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well you can't basically steal your parents money for games through a tutor and who's to say the apps she got were educational.

[–]milkontherocks 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

who's to say they weren't? my point is, acting like it's a big deal for little kids to have new technology is silly. there's nothing inherently wrong with giving a 5-year-old access to an iPad. it just happens to fit in with this sort of reverse-elitist enforced non-conformity which seems to dominate this website.

in other words, "popular things are bad" is just as ridiculous as "popular things are good"

Yeah it's not the end of the world but some kids can be really fickle. I got my 9 yr old sister a DS for Xmas last year - she never plays with it. This year she has asked for the 3DS. I'm not wasting my money.

Really? Like any of us use them for anything more worthwhile. I use my 32 gb iphone 4 to browse reddit, check email, call a select group of people occasionally, play angry birds for a few minutes every six months, and thats it. None of that is important, or any more necessary than a 10 year olds use for it, which I presume would be texting, calling people, playing games, and playing music. Further more, most adults phones are beat to hell, so you cant really argue that a 10 year old would be less responsible with one either. Im tired of people claiming more importance over other people based such an arbitrary thing like age.

Something ive noticed, when ever you get older, you look back and realized that A. you werent tough shit back then, and B. there wasnt a big difference between you and people younger than you. We are all immature. So unless you are the oldest, wisest, most productive person on the planet with a life or death need for an iphone, please dont act like your having an iphone is any less absurd than an 8 year old

Of course, we all use our phones for entertainment purposes. An iPhone is just as much a toy as is an xbox360 at times. But having a smartphone can also be an asset at work - being able to check work emails and respond to inquiries without being at the office saves a great deal of time. It also functions as a GPS, store finder, etc...things that very few eight year olds require, as they are driven around and picked up. My point is that some children today are incredibly spoiled and reliant on technology that is just unnecessary for their age level. It's "unnecessary" for everyone, but more so for children, especially when the cost of owning one is so high (monthly data plans) and the benefit is solely based on entertainment.

[–]KlimTheSmartCow 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, but I think that we are all spoiled on unnecessary technology, and children are hardly to blame for what is clearly a result of their environment. I would venture that 80% of all smartphone users do not receive important work emails on them, or require a gps on a daily basis. Honestly, I am considering switching back to a dumb phone for a while.

I don't get why there's such a bitter attitude towards younger generations these days. Kids are allowed to want things, guys! Listening to a bunch of people discussing how they want to "punt children who beg for iphones" is just pathetic. Whether your anger stems from your own crappy childhood, or is just a result of you growing up, remember that you were a kid too. And I'm sure the things you begged for seemed absurd to the generation above yours. Get over yourselves, fellow redditors!

Sold one today for a guy intending it to be for his 5 year old nephew. I guess your mom being a heroin addict and dad in jail will get you an iPhone in this country.

I didn't get a cellphone until I was 13 (a Nokia 6610 or so) and that was only because I had to have one for a middle school trip out of state for a few days. I never even used one all that much until I was 16 and trying to get girlfriends and stuff. I'm not going to get my kids (when I have them) cell phones until they're at least in 8th grade or maybe a freshman in high school.

For the past 3 years my niece has continually asked for the same few items for Christmas. A laptop, an iPhone, an iPod, and an iPad. Since she was 7. Fucking ridiculous.
