He is in a place, it's called the universe, his constituent materials still exist as does the information bound within them. He just doesn't function anymore as a living, breathing, smoking, and drinking human - only as fodder for the cleanup crew of smaller organisms.

Since this is true, if people claim the world is worse off without him, then he's in a worse place. Although, I would beg to differ.

I know almost nothing of this man, but through his death, I've taken the time to read a little more about him and I assume other ignorant folks such as myself have done so too. If that can be accomplished through the simple act of dying (everyone can do it) then what better a way to spread an idea that challenges the notion of god than this.

Of course, it helps to be famous/infamous before one dies, otherwise no one other than your immediate family and close friends will give a shit.
