I tried that. On a vatation to the greek island Creta. A fly flew into my eye and layed eggs which hatched to larvas. After several days in pain, i contacted an ophthalmologist who gave said "oh - worms" and removed them with tweezers and a swab :(

That is the Loa Loa Filariasis, or Loa Loa Eye worm. First Discovered in the Caribbean in 1770. French surgeon (Mongin) failed to remove a worm from a woman's eye. 1778, Francois Guyot notes worms in West African slaves' eyes on a ship to america. 1 worm was successfully removed. Symptoms: Asymptomatic(Carrier with no symptoms) Microfilaremia. Lymphatic dysfunction that causes Fluid retention and swelling. (Lymphedema) Calabar swellings in arms and legs. (Rapid swelling of tissues) Passage over the eyeball can be detected and felt, but usually takes less than 15 minutes. Dead worms can cause Abscesses. Transmission Mango flies (Deerfly vectors) Blood sucking, and day biting Found in Rainforest environments in west and Central Africa. They mature to adults in human host tissues. after, the adult worms mate and produce more. Humans are primary, but they can infect hippos, buffalo, rodents, and lizards.

The only way to detect you have one is to look at something really bright and then close your eyes. If you can see spots you have the worms and will be blind soon.
