This has always been mysterious to me, and these clarify a whole lot.

However, why then, does the bobbin use so much less thread than the needle?

[–]wadsface 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The bobbin actually does not use up more then the needle, it ideally uses the exact same amount. The take-up lever (the big arm that moves way up and down on the front of the machine) releases and then takes back up all the thread needed to go around the bobbin and forms the stitch. The same section of thread moves in and out of the eye of the needle up to 120 times or more depending on how long the take-up is. Depending on the correct setting of tensions or what kind of sewing you are doing the top or bottom can use slightly more then the other, but not much.

Then why are the rolls different sizes? I'd make more sense to me.

[–]wadsface 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you mean the rolls? The bobbin can be different sizes from one another due to how the machine was designed if that is what you mean. Or do you mean the bobbin as compared to the spool of thread? That is just how they work, its like saying the gas tank at the gas station is a lot bigger then the one in my car. Well you fill the one in your car with the one from the gas station, much like you fill the bobbin with the spool of thread.

[–]thatisBS 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you saying that the thread on the bobbin comes from the spool? I remember when you put the bobbin in, there already is thread on it. You make it sound like the sewing is done using one thread of string, when the gif shows that they're two separate threads, one from bobbin and one from spool. It doesn't show how the spool feeds the bobbin at all.

[–]NeutralStar 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You put the thread on the bobbin, cut the thread and put the bobbin down below. You don't have a spool down there because spools come in different sizes while as most bobbin's are universal afaik. I have seen bobbins that you can buy that already have thread but most of the time ive seen it done its been my mother putting the thread onto the bobbin.

[–]wadsface 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. You first wind the bobbin on the bobbin winder, that is mostly incorporated somewhere on the top or side of the machine, when it is full you cut it, place the bobbin where it goes, rethread the top of the machine and then you sew. And you are right I made it sound like they come from the same place, which they do, but just not at the same time. Edit: Most bobbins are not universal and will break a machine if used improperly, and pre-wound bobbins do in fact exist but mostly for industrial applications.

[–]NeutralStar 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I meant like the size of the bobbin. I've always assumed they were the same size so you could go and buy just a random pack of empty bobbins to put your various threads on. It would make sense though that there are different sizes and what not seeing as that's how it is in most other industries with parts.

[–]thatisBS 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why do bobbins come with thread on them if they get fed from the spool?

[–]NeutralStar 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The same reason why you can get plenty of things premade like food or items. It can save time so some people are willing to pay for it.

[–]thatisBS 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According the gif, it take two threads of thread to sew, one from the spool, one from the bobbin. Since there is so little thread on the bobbin compared to the spool, does it run out first? Or is the bobbin fed new thread continuously so it never depletes?

[–]underline2 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The main reason to wind it from the spool is to get the same color and so it's refillable. Most pre-wound ones (non-commercially, anyway) are in white or black, as those are common colors to need.

[–]wadsface 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are an option. 99% of the time you have to wind your own bobbins.

[–]mdboop 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Usually they don't. Normally, you'd buy your large spools of thread, and then the empty bobbins.

[–]wasrackart 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

the needle thread may have to travel further in the end, since it goes to the other side to meet the bobbin... it may not retract as far. I dont know anything about sewing though, so this is a shot in the dark.

i stared at it for 5 minutes and still have no fucking clue how it works

[–]db0255 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right. I mean. There's a circle on the inside, and then the thing that carries the sewing thread. But if they're attached, which they'd have to be to something...how does the thread get around it?

[–]wadsface 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The circle on the inside is the bobbin that has thread wound in it, this is inside of a bobbin case. The thing that carries the thread around is the hook or shuttle (depends on if its oscillating or full rotary) The bobbin is free spinning inside of the bobbin case and has a tail of thread coming out of it that is pressed under a flat spring that gives you your bobbin tension. Those two things are inside of the hook, they are free floating, but not free spinning, being held in place by a position bracket. This keeps it loosely in place so that the thread can come into one side and out the other as it goes around. After the needle thread comes around the bobbin case, the take-up lever on the top of the machine pulls it all back through and your top tension disks that you threaded when you started keep (ideally) the correct amount of pressure on the thread (opposed by the earlier mentioned bobbin tension) coming back up to lay the now lock-stitched threads in the middle of whatever you are sewing through. Type of stitch and sewer's preference can allow for a different tension ratio, pulling the needle thread farther down so you don't see any bobbin thread on the top of your material, for instance.

[–]sirukin 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What?

[–]underline2 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Needle is threaded. Round part has a bobbin which is also threaded. When the needle comes down, the needle thread gets wrapped around the bobbin thread, forming a stitch.

[–]harrygibus 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly, if the loop from the top thread has to go around the bobbin (and I assume the bobbin is attached to a shaft) how the hell is this possible in our dimension? (don't make me take my sewing machine apart, Reddit!)

I know the answer to "when does a sewing machine jam?" And it's ALWAYS when I think I've managed to finish a difficult section. This is also when the bobbin runs out without notice, or the needle unthreads itself for no good reason. Either way you have to do the whole thing over again.

This picture doesn't explain how the thread gets around the bobbin, or insofar as it does explain that, it doesn't then explain how the bobbin is kept in place. Because if the bobbin were held in place by a solid axle, then the thread would have to pass through that axle, no clipping mode on.

One conceivable technical solution might be to use a splt axle which shifts along its axis of rotation, to the left, to the right, left, right, left, right, intermittently opening a gap on either side of the bobbin, so the thread can pass through that gap:

   | ^ R //
   | | // _
   | v // /!
   | ___// /
_______ - // \
\ / / // |

 | | | / \ |
/__|__\ | | /
   | | () |/
   | ^ | |
   | | \//____/
   | v L // _
                //       /!
               //       /

But I don't know if that's how it's really done in actual sewing machines (maybe someone else knows?), and this picture does not explain that crucial point. That's why the linked imgur picture presents a very incomplete and therefore bad explanation: It may make some people think they've understood – when they really haven't. That's bad.
