they are regional. some people don't have them. it would be interesting to watch someone listen to them who hasn't run into them before. (they make a loud whirring/chirping noise,and when there's one there's lots.) good sauted in garlic butter, so i hear.

they are common in Australia and i think else where. the only bad thing about them is that they are pretty fucking loud, although they only come out in summer around Christmas. there are many different coloured ones green, black, brown, and some have red eyes. they are pretty cool.

that's their shell they are born underground and live there for several years i believe. its quite cool watching them some out of their shell, it takes a couple of hours for them to so so.

i don't know. something about attaching dead skin of insects to your clothes. i myself enjoyed killing and torturing small animals up until about 16 years old. now looking back it was so cruel and it haunts me sometimes.

Yup I live in Indiana and every summer I see a FUCKTON of those shells. the bugs themselves scare the shit out of me for some reason but the shells are just interesting.

I'm sorry but this is adorable.

I in no way find this to be WTF, that little guy is so cute and his wings are so so pretty. Plus Cicadas are harmless,really loud and remind me how fucking balls hot outside it is come summer, but harmless none the less.

I remember as a kid in Texas, me and the other kids in the neighborhood would find these as they were getting ready to emerge. Once they fully emerged from the husk and were laying there being "reborn". We would all take out our dicks and pee on them. We did this at least 3x a week. I'm not really sure why we did it, but it just seemed like the right thing to do back then.

Dude, those are baby E.T.'s. They're awesome. They crawl out the ground as little armored lobstrosoties, and then crack open and sprout paper thin wings. I used to love going to sleep while they chirped outside. It doesn't feel like Florida without them.
