Beware of trading scammers!

A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

As a web design Freelancer, I can confirm I don't look nearly this badass when I work.

As a web design Freelancer when you approach people in bars to ask about work, do you start off by saying, "Ehhh what you got?"

Fuck yeah, I played on the Discovery mod server a bit, they had added hundreds of new ships, tons of new content, etc. Capital ships even? It was cRaZy! It was a blast trying to run high value trade routes with actual player pirates about, lol scary and very rewarding when you dodged them, but equally immersive when they caught you and you literally have to deal with being extorted out of money / cargo etc or worse!

Man I remember playing on the void. Had a clan and all, with real training involved for ship maneuvers and such... And traveling across several systems to get to a place to mine and later make profit with my clanmates... Man, such a great game. I want it again. :/

[–]kosairox 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Freelancer for me was the first thing I ever did on the internet. And I was using modem, so my parents only allowed me to play a short time a day. I remember when one guy giften me the Eagle and 2 Tizona el Cids. And my first PvP. And running from pirates. Goddamit, I miss those times.

[–]Mucak 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Man it was my first online game as well, back when I first got my internet a few years ago on the shittiest possible provider, not to mention I was like... 12. But those were the good days, when 12 year olds weren't the typical Xbox Live 12 year olds we hear about so much.

The thing I remember most was when my first clan thought me to use the brake/backwards thruster, to turn fast in PVP. Later first experiences ever with a TeamSpeak and actually talking to somebody else over the internet with a mic. Man. I'm 18 now. That was 6 years ago... You just can't experience something like that these days... Not to mention the fact that... woah. That was a long time ago... :'(

[–]WuuZii 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Engine Kill, greatest pvp tool in freelancer.

Kills the engine and you do a 180 still travelling in the original direction but facing backwards so as to bring all guns to bear on your targets rear

[–]silentbobsc 17 points18 points ago

I tried, I REALLY tried, but that game broke me.

Seriously, tried across several multi-hour sessions... tried it as a soldier/fighter type, trader, and different styles of flight... tried to get some of the UI/Trade mods to help since the Tutorial didn't take the hyper-aggressive in game market into account, etc.

The one that broke me was an 'early' fighter mission, I'd already died repeatedly with the "Fly into the pirate base, scan and GTFO" but finally made it on to a mission where I was taking my squad out for it's first spin. Was flying to the destination and noticed a large NPC confilct on the other side of the 'zone'. I went out of my way to try and skirt around it, and was watching the battle and how huge the laser fire was then BZZZZZZZT POOOF! NPC aggro'd me out of nowhere and showed me what those big ass lazors did.

[–]randomvariable0 2 points3 points ago

May I present: Jumpgate Evolution (JGE)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG6lxk8edrM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuX3AEmxEsw

A space combat MMORPG in which the dev team are savvy, the concepts seem well thought-out, the gameplay appears fun, it's specially optimised for low-end PCs, the model would have most likely been single-payment, the graphics are shiny, the combat is skill-based, the depth could be really substantial...

And so on and so on.

The catch?

It was cancelled so the dev team could work on LEGO Universe, 7 years of work down the drain. LEGO Universe (predictably) failed, and now NetDevil is breaking down.

Trollface

Ahahaha... Ah who am I kidding? ='(

[Edit] Changed one link, because one of the vids got taken off YT 30 seconds after I posted it apparently, after being up for 2 years xD

I'm so sick of MMO space combat games. I've never liked a single one. I want a space combat game but not an MMO. Why will no one make one anymore? I can't be the only one that hates MMOs

[–]WalterFStarbuck 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. It's the MMO model of gameplay I can't stand. I love space combat games. Just not ones where you have to build up a character/ship/skillset. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter was my ideal Space Combat game. Everything else has been a let down.

Sigh. I'm going to go cancel my Eve Online subscription tonight. This game looks amazing -- the fact that it isn't coming out really sucks, but seeing what a space MMO ~COULD~ be.. Sorry, I just need more tactile control of my ships.

[–]Poolboy24 5 points6 points ago

May I humbly reply with Space Rogue.

Edit: I have no idea if anybody else played this game but me and my brothers...but when I was a kid, holy shit. It felt like you could do anything in this game.

Not much was explained. You were just sent on your way to trade, bounty hunt, explore...whatever!

OK, wormholes were a bitch. But this game was awesome up the dick with goodness.

I haven't played X3 or Darkstar One, but having played Freespace 2 and Freelancer, I found the combat in Freelancer comparatively dull, and it seemed like X3 and Darkstar One were closer to Freespace 2. Freelancer was fun, but I liked it mostly for the plot.

Okay this is going to be embarrassing but here is an email that I typed and sent to Microsoft a year after the game was first released having played it non stop for days and days. I was 13 at the time and clearly insane, also I haven't edited it at all (besides removing my name):

19 August 2004

Dear Microsoft,

I have heard that you are currently making Freelancer 2 as a sequel for Freelancer, is this true?

Freelancer has (so far) occupied about 55 hours of my life, it is a brilliant game. I hope that Freelancer 2 will be an even better game. The simplexity and easyness of play is what makes freelancer so perfect, if Freelancer 2 is anything like X2: The Threat, nobody will buy it. You could even keep the same physics engine and graphics and just add ships, guns and systems and it would be an instant hit. The only problem I can think of in Freelancer is that the guns are too similar, the only exeption is the Tizona Del Cid, please vary the guns in Freelancer 2, as this will improve it a lot.

These are my ideas of what should happen in Freelancer 2 I have also trawled the internet forums and asked what do people think should be in Freelancer 2 and so when I speak now I am speaking for a lot of people, so this is what the majority thinks.

Ships: More ships of all shapes and sizes, and especially huge freighters like the ones in Freelancer 1.

Guns: Lots and Lots of Guns, Must vary a hell of a lot. It is currently very hard to decide whether or not to use a JADE or THOR'S HAMMER.

Graphics: I think the graphics currently are just fine, but they could be updated a bit. but please do not make it laggy because of too high graphics, I think that the graphics of the weapons when they fire and the shield when they are hit are just brilliant.

Physics Engine: I think that the current Physics engine is perfect, but you could make the effects a little more realistic, but I stress that you keep it almost exactly the same.

Misc: I think that trade lanes should be fixed so that you cannot crash and die. i really think that the entire game be made a lot bigger, more of everything.

Storyline: I really think that the storyline is not important, the freedom of multiplayer is what makes the re-playable and it is what will make me buy the game.

Universe: I think that there should be a massive universe, absolutely huge, but you can buy alot of things at each base, except for really good fighters and frieghter which should be at the furthest borders of the universe.

I think that having Tachyon, neutron, etc, is just perfect. But, Now this is extremely important, in different sectors could there be a new set of types like Atomised shields and ionic Weapons for example, which are really good at taking out Molecular shields and so forth.

I think the most important thing is that the game is kept simple like Freelancer 1 as opposed to X2: The Threat, I think the simplicity is what makes this game really good.

It is unimportant as to whether or not it is a new game or an expansion pack, if it is good I will buy it.

I beg that you put alot of effort into this game and make it excellent as a lot of people will be playing this game for a very long time.

Yours Sincerely,

(my name)

I actually started reading this now then stopped because it's just too embarrassing for words. Yet here we are. I've even invented a few new words there.

[–]erracity 20 points21 points ago

Freelancer was one of the most memorable games I think I have ever played. Specifically because the most rewarding events took place after I had beaten the story, that being the discovery of the corsair worlds and building reputation with them, earning money through a triangle of trade with diamonds, meat, and optics between three systems and eventually buying the heaviest class of ship from the corsairs, and finally discovering the lost wreckage of the Espana and piecing together how it was the corsairs came to exist and eek out an existence (survivors of the lost Espana). Also FREELANCER ALPHA ONE DASH ONE YOU ARE CLEARED TO DOCK.

I have so many fond memories of this game. I absolutely loved the single player, it was just plain good fun, but I adored the multiplayer. I belonged to this tight knit server of 40-50 players and every clan had a different role. One clan might be the Rheinland Military, another would be the Liberty Police. The admin was a cool (if moody) guy who would allow clans that donated to the server to have cruisers, battleships, or other cool things like that.

There was a Nomad clan who all had nomad ships, they were made up of some of the best players on the servers and only totaled 8 members. They were feared by all. There were pirate clans with shaky alliances and even a reformed Dragons clan that had tense relationships with the Kusari military clan who were lead by the new Kusari emperor.

The server fell apart just like any tight knit community in online gaming will, but I'll never forget how much fun I had flying with my Rheinland police clan (which only had 3 members), chasing down players trying to smuggle Cardamine through Berlin.

I would love this too, but with three differences

-> Balanced ships across the universe rather than leveling scale, different pros/cons for ships/weapons/setups

-> Much bigger universe, it would be nice to see something the size and depth of EVE or Escape velocity in a modern hi fidelity game, without all the bells and whistles of a game like X3 that make it unplayable for anyone other than space sim hobbyists.

-> Please cut out the low budget space drama plot. Even as a kid I found it to detract more from the game than it could have possibly added. Rebels, pirates, drug runners, navies, vigilantes, mercs, and some basic conflict/exploration is really all you need. Throw in some ambient mysteries (like the Hispania in Freelancer) all over the place to make exploring cool and then bam, excellent remake.

No skipping ahead. Just set to HD and watch it (and then part 2) play out full-screen.

This has been in development for forever, by a very small group of guys (I think his name is Keith). But if it can do what it promises? Then ho-lee shit.

Oh man, this game was awesome. Have some great memories when my and my buddies used to LAN it out, two of us would buy that liberty freighter and the rest would all get fighters, buy a bunch of contraband and then find where it sells for the most. Used to have a heaps of fun doing those smuggling runs! Great game.

Freelancer did space combat better than anyone.

I remember that during really difficult dog fights, I always used to cut my engines and drift ('z' key, I think it was) to fake out the enemies, as they kept tracking me based on my projected momentum/speed and ship angle. I would then turn about, effectively travelling backwards, and unleash hell on them.

That game was fucking fun.

Check out the X Series.

X3 Terran Conflict is fantastic. Open-ended space simulator with a huge universe, beautiful graphics, and a CRAZY amazing amount of customization. Also, you can be a pretentious hipster fuck because nobody's ever heard of it.

[–]ebayblows 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

X3 is a good game if you're looking for a space fix. But it's really more of a first person 4x game, not a space flight sim.

[–]Elguybrush 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've tried the x series, and I would not recommend it.

There's a scale of simulation vs arcade space fighting, tie fighter being on the arcade side and x being the definition of the simulation side.

Unless you're a real fan of tycoon games and clunky controls, the X series does not satisfy as a good free-roaming space fighter like freelancer does.

[–]pamme 9 points10 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I think of it more as a very good economic/empire building sim rather than a straight up space shooter. It's a very enjoyable game if you approach it from that stand-point. However, the clunky controls make it hard for me to keep playing for very long at a time.

X Rebirth, the next game in the series, coming next year looks very promising though. Everything was rebuilt from scratch and among the new features, it sounds like they've opened up the space more which will hopefully make exploration more enjoyable.

[–]Tohopekaliga 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The X series is enjoyable (I mostly played X2 ), but the controls always bothered me. Much too flighty and inexact...whether I used mouse or joystick.

[–]MrButtermancer 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ALRIGHT HATERS:

Here's the thing. You hate the controls? Switch them to classic. Classic is better. The whole mouse targeting thing is monstrous, which is why there is Classic as an alternative. Also, customize stuff you don't like. And learn keystrokes. Using the mouse is a hassle, if you remember that "T" causes your targeting reticule to lock-on, you've just saved moving your right hand to the mouse. Don't use the mouse. Really.

Those of you having trouble with dogfighting, I can't stress this enough, purchase MK II Combat Software and immediately set your lasers to autotarget. This gives you the benefit of the "precision" (it's not) of the mouse-firing method while allowing you to keep your right hand on the arrow keys.

Again, learn the hotkeys. Know how to brake and accelerate, and know the key combinations for immediate full acceleration, immediate full brake, and "match target," which puts your throttle at that of your current target.

Those of you worrying about travel time? Use the SETA upgrade to make the game go faster. Default is 6x, you can increase it to 10x and you should do so. Engine Tuning and a Jumpdrive can also make navigating easier.

Those of you who don't think you can find as much action, really? Alright, first, you can find ready action in most Pirate or Yaki sectors, and ANY Xenon sector. You'll find WAAAAY too much action if you locate the Kha'ak sectors. You can make money by selling disabled ships. It's very difficult, but VERY rewarding. An early Pirate Falcon can yield 2,000,000 credits if it's got the right guns, which is EASILY your first private merchant (TS class ship with MK III Trading Software that will trade autonomously for you at a profit), or a few wingmen.

Combat missions are also everywhere. They are represented by a red target, and you can scan for missions by highlighting a station, opening the comms with C, and checking for that icon under any of the traders. Enemies and profits are rank dependent, and you can easily be facing FLEETS of Xenon and pirates at the higher ranks. It's SO much fun to fly a fighter in the melee of a battle between a few Argon Titans (capitol ships) exchanging unpleasantries with a carrier full of pirate craft. The money can be pretty awesome too.

And really. This game is fantastic. You just need to learn the controls. NO MOUSE. Trust me on this, it doesn't work. Keyboard or joystick, though I haven't tried joystick.

[–]TED_666 7 points8 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To me, X3 is the awful middle child between Freelancer (focused on action and ease of use) and Eve Online (focused on technical detail) that manages to incorporate both their flaws while losing their great strengths.

That is to say that the controls make dogfighting a nightmare, but it doesn't have the technical depth of Eve. And its really not that far away from getting it right, all they would have to do is ditch that monstrous linear menu system and fix the controls to behave in a similar fashion to freelancer and you'd have a killer game.

I would recommend trying out Darkstar One. It is very similar, even down to the controls. Production values aren't that high, but it looks better than freelancer.

Forget all this X and EVE stuff, Darkstar One is the closest thing to Freelancer you'll probably find.

[–]DiscountLlama 11 points12 points ago

This mod is so huge its basically a sequel. I played a ton on the roleplaying server as a member of LPI, facing down the unwashed, barely literate pirate hordes of superheavy fighters covered in experimental guns in my tiny little Liberator light fighter.

The mod let you customize the lights on your ship so we all had blue and red flashers on our fighters. Blues and twos in space.

I'd pay for an HD version with a new graphics engine, similar to EVE or the latest X game. Keep everything else the same. And have it moddable. This is what made me keep coming back to it over and over again. I'd also pay for an HD version of Deus Ex. But, then again, I think everyone would.

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it and I don't mean to be a total downer but there is an unfinished sequel to this game... :( Digital Anvil was developing it for xbox 360 and it got cancelled when Microsoft axed the company. The game looked incredible! Sad day. If you need to have a little cry and see some game footage go to youtube and search Freelancer 2 gameplay.

This game is easily one of my top three all time favorite games. If anyone knows of any servers that are still up and have a decent amount of people on them I would love to start playing again.
